The palate is truly delightful, with the fruit shining through initially, followed by earthy notes, such as truffle. Superfine tannins contribute to its overall elegance. Of the 2013 Produttori del Barbaresco "Asili" Barbaresco Riserva, Vinous writes: "Absolutely stunning in every way, the 2013 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is also the most complete wine in the lineup at this stage. Floral, lifted and exquisitely beautiful, the 2013 speaks to regal elegance and finesse above all else. Silky tannins add to an impression of total sensuality. At this stage, there is almost no impression of tannin, as the wine is so impeccably balanced. The 2013 shuts down quickly in the glass, which may suggest it is headed for a long period of dormancy. Readers who can find the Asili should not miss it, as it is truly sublime. (AG)" (10/2017)

Riserva is a stunning, generous wine, with great aromas and layers of delicious flavors including succulent raspberry, Morello cherry, star anise and blood orange. While it’s already immensely enjoyable, it also has a long life ahead. (KO)
The 2020 Barbaresco Morassino is laced with hints of dried cherry, cedar, pipe tobacco, mint, orange peel and spice. Already quite open and expressive, the 2020 is a fine choice for drinking now and over the next handful of years. All the elements are so well balanced in this gracious, mid-weight Barbaresco from Cascina Morassino. Pretty floral overtones and bright acids lift the elegant finish. (AG)

The 2021 Barbaresco Costa Russi is a jeweled ruby color and is bright with fresh herbs, mint, cherries, thyme, and freshly dried earth. It has good volume and ripe structure on the palate and is long and cooling, with a note of fresh lavender. It also has a great, mouthwatering mineral tone with a more linear feel, but it’s powerful at the same time, with the sanguine and ripe blood orange notes that are shared across the vintage. It needs time, but wow, is it worth snapping up! (AF)

Pale ruby in the glass, with a darker fruit character, well-defined raspberry and blackberry. Ripe and concentrated. Rose and violet enhance the aromatic profile. Balsamic style on the palate, with large, dense, velvety tannins, plentiful in volume before a chocolaty finish. Refreshing acidity balances the lush character. Ovello is one of the cooler and more austere MGAs in Barbaresco. The expectation could be really high in a warm vintage such as 2020. (AF)

Very classy and perfumed, with ripe strawberries, spice, cedar, sandalwood and iron shavings that follow through to a medium body with extremely long and pointed tannins that go on and on. Lightly chewy at the end. Racy Asili. Hard not to drink now. Best after 2029.
Fresh and restrained wine, with an exquisite mix of graphite, orange peel, dried cherries and strawberries, as well as whiffs of potpourri and licorice. Medium- to full-bodied, it displays velvety, ripe tannins with tight-knit acidity and a juicy style, despite the more biting finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2026. (AF)

A brightly jeweled ruby hue, the 2021 Barbaresco is super-expressive, with loads of wild raspberries that leap from the glass along with notes of strawberries, pressed roses, fresh orange, and violet. As it opens, it evens picks up some spice box, cigar incense, and cherry notes. Crystalline in nature and ripe, this next-level red delivers ripe, sweet tannins, great tension, and fresh, vibrant acidity, without any austerity. A luxury racecar, it’s fantastic and possibly the wine of the year. (AF)

The 2021 Barbaresco Montefico Vigna Bric Mentina is redolent of dried herbs, mint, spice, pipe tobacco and cedar. Exotic and beguiling, especially in its bouquet, the 2021 is just starting to open. For centuries, the Levi family worked as "Grapat" based San Giacomo or Vallespluga, locally called "Val di Giust", in the municipalities of Fraciscio di Campodolcino. Each season they would come down from the Alpine valleys to the wine making regions, to distill the leftovers from wine production. Over 50 distilleries were founded by families from this valley in Northern Italy and Serafino Levi chose the quiet town of Neive to start his. Tragically both he and his wife died very young leaving his teenage son and daughters to run the special distillery. When Romano & Lidia Levi took over the distillery in 1945, they were just kids, but they built on their parent’s reputation for quality and infused a love and art in each batch. Using the highest quality fresh grape pomace from the world's finest wineries, they slowly distilled, as their father had, over direct fire stills. Romano's hand painted labels became the iconic calling card of this extremely special spirit. After Lidia's death in 2010, the village of Neive created a historic working distillery museum(UNESCO site) to preserve the traditions of the Levi family. For the Barbaresco, the grapes are grown on DOCG vineyards in Neive, Barbaresco, Trezzo, Treiso, and Alba.
Bid on this bottle of 1982 Gaja "Sori Tildin" Barbaresco (95JG, 95VN). Vinous: "The 1982 Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn, on the other hand, was awesome. It revealed superb depth in its core of generous fruit, with superb concentration as well as balance. It was a memorable wine in every way. In the late 1970s and 1980s Gaja often waited to harvest until very late in the growing season in order to achieve the ripeness he was looking for. 1982 was the last vintage made with this method as subsequent vintages brought warmer weather than had previously been the case. The 2022 is a charming, elegant rendition of the vintage expressing raspberry and strawberry with snaps of coriander and allspice. Seamless in flow, the palate is underscored by sweet acid and framed by soft, silky tannins. Juicy and drinkable now but with enough grip for the next seven to eight years. A blend of the estate’s parcels in the distinguished MGAs of Rabajà, Rabajà-bas and Faset, Castello di Verduno’s classic Barbaresco ages in large Slavonian oak casks. (MM)

Returning to a more traditional expression of site, the 2023 Barbaresco Sorì San Lorenzo shows the classic character of this vineyard. Leaping from the glass with energy, the 2023 Barbaresco Sorì Tildin pours a jeweled ruby color and shows remarkable depth and clarity. A small percentage of barrique is used, yet the wine retains striking purity with notes of framboise, pressed flowers, and polished stones. There is a seductive quality here that almost recalls a great Burgundy in its elegance and texture. The tannins are sweet and refined, and the wine is dangerously easy to drink despite its complexity and depth. Mouthwatering and exceptionally long, drink 2026-2058. 2,900 bottles were produced. (AF)

The 2022 Barbaresco Normale from the Rocca family’s lovely La Ca’Növa estate is a beautifully classic example of Barbaresco, hailing from limestone-rich soils, fermented with native yeasts, given a thirty day maceration period and raised in classic botti prior to bottling. The wine shows the style of the 2022 vintage, coming in at 14.5 percent octane and delivering a very deep, pure and complex bouquet of red and black cherries, anise, woodsmoke, a lovely base of chalky soil, rose petals and a touch of red curry in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, focused and complex, with a gorgeous core of fruit, tangy acids, chewy, well-integrated tannins and superb length and grip on the precise and very nicely balanced finish. Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 1998 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco. Bruno Giacosa joined his family's winery at the tender age of 15, so this wine was made under his watch. Monica Larner writes in Wine Advocate: "A legendary figure in a land of legendary wines, Bruno Giacosa, passed away in Alba on January 22, 2018, with his daughters Marina and Bruna at his side. He was 88. Following a stroke in 2006, Giacosa had slowly retreated from the spotlight. His daughter Bruna has managed the eponymous winery and vineyard these past years. ... Bruno Giacosa will be remembered for his keen ability to recognize the best growing sites for Nebbiolo, Barbera and the other great grapes of Piedmont. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of the cru sites of his beloved Langhe." (06/2018)

The 2020 Barbaresco Montefico Vecchie Viti is one of the most reticent wines in this range. Then again, we are talking about Montefico. Strong savory and mineral notes take center stage. Mint, sweet pipe tobacco and sage open first, while fruit remains in the background. Driving yet fine-grained tannins shape the mid-palate and finish. This is such a striking wine. Classic Montefico all way. Chalk, dried herbs, dried flowers and a hint of earthiness build into the delineated, saline-drenched finish. Superb. (AG)

The Fabio Gea "Notu Seguiva Le Gocce d'Acqua" Barbaresco is a rare and captivating expression of Barbaresco from the innovative winemaker Fabio Gea, known for his natural and minimal-intervention approach to winemaking. Based in the Langhe region of Piedmont, Gea crafts wines that reflect the essence of their terroir, allowing the grapes and the land to speak for themselves. The poetic name, translating to "Notu followed the drops of water," reflects his deep connection to nature and the patient craftsmanship behind his wines. This Barbaresco is a beautiful representation of Nebbiolo in its most elegant form, offering classic aromas of rose petals, red cherries, and dried herbs, along with hints of earth, spices, and a touch of mineral complexity. On the palate, the wine is refined and structured, with fine tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, layered finish. The balance of fruit, floral notes, and earthiness is a testament to Gea's skill in allowing the vineyard's character to shine through with minimal manipulation. Notu Seguiva Le Gocce d'Acqua Barbaresco is a stunning example of how Fabio Gea approaches winemaking with respect for tradition and a touch of modern creativity. It is a must-try for enthusiasts of natural wines and lovers of expressive, terroir-driven Barbaresco that captures the true spirit of the Langhe.
Insider's Advantage
The estate makes two single-site bottlings from the neighbouring MGAs of Rabajà and Rabajà-Bas. Trying them side by side is a fascinating lesson in Barbaresco’s complex terroir. Slightly higher and southwest-facing, rather than fully west, Rabajà demonstrates a notch up in finesse and vibrancy – even in 2022. Aromas of sage, damp earth and brushwood carry over to the cranberry and redcurrant palate, demonstrating lovely flow and balance. This doesn’t have the richness or structural matrix of the greatest vintages, but it is a juicy and pretty edition. (MM)

The 2020 Barbaresco Montefico Vigna Bric Mentina is a very pretty wine that captures all the magic of this great site, but without all of the explosive tension of the very best years. I doubt that will matter much to most consumers, though. A beguiling mix of macerated cherry, rose petal, dried leaves and spice builds into vibrant, salivating finish. I have tasted (or drunk!) this wine at least a dozen times since it was first released.
