Decanter
Reviewed January 2023Pale ruby in the glass, with a darker fruit character, well-defined raspberry and blackberry. Ripe and concentrated. Rose and violet enhance the aromatic profile. Balsamic style on the palate, with large, dense, velvety tannins, plentiful in volume before a chocolaty finish. Refreshing acidity balances the lush character. Ovello is one of the cooler and more austere MGAs in Barbaresco. The expectation could be really high in a warm vintage such as 2020. (AF)

Vinous
The 2020 Barbaresco Ovello is a powerful, intense wine. Black cherry, leather, cedar, tobacco, licorice and dried herbs are all dialed up. The Ovello has more fruit intensity, extraction and oak influence than the straight Barbaresco. It's a very good wine, but there is some loss of site character. (AG)
Notes
Cascina Morassino’s 2020 Ovello is a Nebbiolo from southeast-facing slopes in the commune of Barbaresco. The soils are calcareous marl, and Ovello is central to the estate: 3.5 of its 4.5 hectares of vines lie within this vineyard area. Mauro Bianco founded the winery in 1984, after three earlier generations had already made wine from Ovello’s grapes. His son Roberto continues the family’s work, with the small estate still concentrated around this Barbaresco site.
