Reviewed January 2026The 2020 Barbaresco Montefico Vecchie Viti is one of the most reticent wines in this range. Then again, we are talking about Montefico. Strong savory and mineral notes take center stage. Mint, sweet pipe tobacco and sage open first, while fruit remains in the background. Driving yet fine-grained tannins shape the mid-palate and finish. This is such a striking wine. Classic Montefico all way. Chalk, dried herbs, dried flowers and a hint of earthiness build into the delineated, saline-drenched finish. Superb.

Wine Spectator
Featuring loads of ripe cherry and peppery spices, with fine viscosity despite its light-weight profile, this red is juicy, resonant and packed with tangy acidity. The tannins are firm and supportive, with the finish combining bright fruit, tar, mineral and savory underbrush elements. Best from 2029 through 2047. 102 cases made, 30 cases imported.

Showing serious structure and intensity, the 2020 Barbaresco Montefichi VV delivers aromas and flavors of new leather, underbrush, wild strawberry, star anise and tobacco before closing on bitter orange and a savory hint of truffle. Firm tannins provide the backbone while tangy acidity keeps it bright. Drink 2030–2040. (KO)
Notes
Roagna’s Montefico occupies a small triangular parcel halfway up the hillside, looking toward Neive. The 0.24-hectare holding faces southeast at about 230 metres, with marl in the calcareous clay subsoil. Acquired in 1929, it is the vineyard the Roagna family has vinified for the longest time. Old Nebbiolo vines form the basis of this Vecchie Viti bottling from one of Barbaresco’s historic sites.
