Year after year, the Roagna Barbaresco Pajè shines with class and remarkable structure and the 2021 doesn't disappoint, starting with its aromas of eucalyptus, lavender, rosemary and red fruit. While it's still youthfully austere, the savory palate features ripe Morello cherry, raspberry compote, blood orange, almond, star anise, almond and flinty mineral before closing on white pepper and a salty note. Firm tannins provide the backbone. (KO)

Notes

Pajè is Roagna’s historic vineyard in the commune of Barbaresco, acquired by the family in 1953. The site forms a natural amphitheater at about 230 meters, facing south and southwest over calcareous marl soils. Kerin O’Keefe’s assessment of the 2021 emphasizes youthful austerity and firm tannins beneath the red fruit. Aromatic herbs and blood orange add definition, while white pepper and a salty note carry the finish. This is Nebbiolo whose fruit remains framed by a substantial, savory structure.
