2012 Lanessan, Haut-Médoc
Review Date: 01-23-2024
Lanessan has produced innumerous vintages of old school, aged Bordeaux that our customers snap up for its wonderful quality-to-price ratio. This is perhaps the best I've had yet. It is certainly more modern and refined than previous vintages, with lovely boysenberry, cassis and black cherry fruit, with a touch of pencil shavings and toast. The concentrated and delicious fruit is lifted and fresh on the palate, with medium, refined tannins and perfectly balanced acid on the finish for freshness. It is showing no tiredness at all, and I expect will continue to age for many years to come. Enjoy now, or later. But don't wait to buy it, deals like this don't last long on the shelf.

2009 Coufran, Haut-Médoc
Review Date: 11-08-2023
Chateau Coufran, oft called the "Pomerol of the Medoc" with its 85% Merlot content, is a perennial staff and customer favorite here at K&L and offers unbelievable value in the ready-to-drink claret category. 2009 was a beautifully warm, ripe vintage, and Coufran is full of concentrated dark bing cherry fruit, licorice, herbs and leathery nuances. The nose is so perfumed and pretty, and the wine is balanced and fresh with good acid lifting the rich fruit on the finish.

Wiston Estate Brut Blanc de Blancs West Sussex England
Review Date: 11-01-2023
The wines of Wiston are a prime example of how good British bubbles can be. The chalky soils of the south of England are a continuation of the same Kimmeridgian strip that runs underneath Champagne, which, with the warmer weather climate change provides, makes it a prime site for bubbly production. This is a decadent blanc de blancs with bright Meyer lemon citrus, wild honey and sourdough toast, flinty smoke and chalky minerals. It has a rich texture, ample fruit balanced by great acidity and an impressively long finish. Enjoy with crab cakes or a nice shrimp cocktail.

Samuel Smith's Nut Brown Ale, England (14.9oz can)
Review Date: 10-26-2023
I had this last night as part of my grand "Revisit-the-Classics" effort to contextualize the ever expanding and confusing beer scene, and whoa, what a doozy! My favorite beers represent their styles well while avoiding straying from a balanced experience (looking at you American IPA scene). Sam Smith has been doing this since 1758, and is still around, so there must be something there. It has plenty of satisfying roasted malt flavors but also excellent fruit undertones, almond nuttiness and a crisp, clean finish. If you want a delicious, balanced and satisfying brown ale that doesn't cost as much as a bottle of wine, throw a few of these in your cart.

Fallet-Dart Brut Rosé Champagne
Review Date: 09-18-2023
This Marne rosé is the rich delicious result of the maceration method, where the skins of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier are left in contact with the wine for two days, giving it its rich pink color and round texture. The flavor profile is a great combination of bright red fruit with darker herbal elements, toast and minerals for a very complete and satisfying rosé experience.

Laurent-Perrier "Grand Siècle" Iteration #26 Brut Champagne
Review Date: 09-18-2023
Being made from some of the best vintages of this millenium (2012, 2008 and 2007), this iteration of Grand Siecle was always destined for greatness. But tasting it, just wow! It has so much depth and complexity, richness and freshness. It is loaded with subtle flavors of stone fruits and citrus, toasty lees, candied ginger and nuts with a hint of matchstick smoke. The longer it's open the more flavors explode out of the glass. On the palate, the richness is buoyed by precision, fine bead from resting on the lees for such a long time, and a nearly eternal finish.

Gosset "Grande Réserve" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 09-18-2023
This is a Grand Marque that you can count on every time for meticulous quality that has remained steadfast through the years (centuries, actually). It has an expressively rich profile of pear, lychee, golden apple and Meyer lemon with toast from an impressive five years on the lees, yet it remains so bright and easy with silky bead and great minerals and a crisp, acid-driven-yet-balanced finish

A.D. Coutelas "Cuvée 1809" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 09-18-2023
Incredible quality and quite the bargain for a prestige cuvée, Coutelas' "Cuvée 1809" is entirely barrel fermented and aged for an exceptionally long 8 years on its lees. The flavor profile is complex, intriguing and delicious: white flowers, lychee/citrus fruit, honey and almonds with delicate sourdough toast and minerals. The richness is totally balanced by freshness and a long, crisp finish, making this difficult to keep a group from emptying the bottle in quick fashion.

2015 A.D. Coutelas Brut Champagne
Review Date: 09-18-2023
This is a vintage champagne from one of our portfolio's best producers (which you know if you've had the "Cuvee Louis Victor") and from a critically lauded vintage. It is half Chardonnay, half Pinot Noir, entirely from estate owned premier cru vineyards. It has a rich profile of citrus, melon, golden apple, honey and almond, lifted by great minerality and an impressively long, acid-driven finish.

Damien Hugot Grand Cru Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne
Review Date: 09-18-2023
This is a rather extraordinary grower-producer blanc de blancs that expertly straddles the line between creamy opulence and razor-sharp focus. It has rich citrus, white peach, and Granny Smith apple fruit, creamy brioche notes, and vibrant minerals. In short, this is what you would pay the big bucks for, but thanks to the direct import pricing, you don't need to. If you could use another great grower Champagne to add to your lineup (and we all could), don't miss this.

Damien Hugot Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru
Review Date: 09-18-2023
This champagne is in sparse company in terms of value. Made from the Grand Cru chardonnay of Chouilly and Cramant on the Cotes de Blancs, it has quite powerful and concentrated citrus and stone fruit flavors that intermingle with floral elements, chalky minerality and toasted sourdough. Despite the power, it remains bright, crisp and refreshing on the palate with creamy mousse and a beautifully precise and long finish. It is quite an impressive balancing act.

Fallet-Dart "Clos du Mont" Brut Champagne (2006)
Review Date: 08-24-2023
The first whiff of this elicited a veritable collective "Wow!" from the staff. The nose is incredibly bright and full of profuse lemon meringue, stone fruits, chalky minerals, toasty lees, honeysuckle and almonds. It's rich and sumptuous on the palate, with a razor sharp acid line and super fine bead from the extended aging time. This is up there with the great luxury prestige cuvees in terms of quality but not in terms of price. Get yours while it lasts.

Boulard-Bauquaire "Carte Noire" Brut Blanc de Noirs Champagne
Review Date: 07-24-2023
Boulaird Bouquaire’s Carte Noir is made from half Pinot Noir, half Pinot Meunier and is full of depth and power. The texture on the palate is round and rich, with succulent flavors of ripe red fruit, honey, baked apple pie, cloves, hibiscus, lemon zest and stone fruits. The finish is long, supple and lifted by the creamy mousse and perfectly honed acidity. Another phenomenal value from the K&L Direct Import Champagne program!

Boulard-Bauquaire "Trepail" Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne Vieilles Vignes
Review Date: 07-13-2023
The Chardonnay used in this Blanc de Blancs comes from premier cru vineyards on the Montagne de Reims, and the quality of the fruit is evident. Lovely aromas of roasted almonds, butterscotch and fresh lemon meringue lift from the glass; on the palate a soft chalky minerality rides alongside nicely balanced acidity. Another home run from our DI Champagne program.

2016 Tertio de Montrose, St-Estèphe
Review Date: 07-11-2023
This is my first encounter with the third label from the lauded Second Growth Montrose, and I'm loving it. It has rich blackberry and dark cherry fruit, red licorice, roses and toast on the nose. The dark fruits are lifted by nice acidity and the tannins are ripe and lend really nice structure to this already approachable wine. Enjoy now or put away for a few more years.

Lehmann "Jamesse Prestige" Grand Champagne Mouth-Blown Wine Glass #45
Review Date: 03-08-2023
If you ever enjoy prestige champagne at home, you should showcase it in worthy glassware, and you would be hard pressed to find a glass more worthy than this mouth-blown, Champagne Sommelier-designed, light-as-a-feather glass imported directly from Reims. The price is nearly as stunning as the glass itself -- just look at the mouth blown glassware prices from other brands out there. Add that it has been meticulously designed to optimally deliver the taste and aromas to you, and there really is no reason not to have this in your glass collection.

Damien Hugot "Hommage 1921" Extra Brut Champagne
Review Date: 02-07-2023
This has an incredible nose reminiscent of a rich Meursault with ripe citrus and granny smith apples, a touch of flinty smoke, and briny minerality. The richness is nicely balanced by lifting acidity and a robust fine bead. Perfect with food or as an aperitif.

Fallet-Dart "Éocène" Extra Brut Champagne
Review Date: 02-07-2023
"Eocene" comes from one of the great walled vineyards of Champagne, the Clos du Mont, in the western Marne Valley. Composed from 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir vinified in oak, then aged for well over a decade on the lees, this showcases a richness and exuberance rarely achieved at this price. It has rich baked apple, dried apricot, and meyer lemon fruit with honeyed walnuts on the nose. It has a rich texture which is lifted by bright acidity and subtle minerality.

Fallet-Dart "Grande Sélection" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 02-07-2023
This is a value I often like to compare to one of the bigger brands in Champagne (with an iconic orange label) that has a similar grape profile. This has bright distinctively ripe citrus and apricot fruitiness, cream, flowers and toast from the seven years on the lees, and amazing texture from the chalky soils. Throw in that you actually save money for all that quality, and it becomes a no-brainer!

Fallet-Dart "Cuvée de Réserve" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 02-07-2023
This Blanc de Noirs is one of the best-kept secrets of the Western Marne Valley. Made from Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, and aged for a particularly lengthy four years on the lees, it has wonderful fresh pear, Bing cherry and apple fruit profile, a broad presence on the palate, and a crisp finish that left a nice yeasty flavor lingering for over a minute! If you’re on the grower-producer train, this is an essential.

Billecart-Salmon "Le Réserve" Champagne
Review Date: 05-04-2022
I love the freshness and precision of the Billecart Salmon Brut Reserve. Designed in a reductive style, this meunier dominant cuvée has beautiful bright expressive flavors of pears, white nectarines, cherries and white floral notes with incredible integration and precision from the time on the lees and the relatively low dosage. Compare to other, similarly priced nonvintage champagnes from the big houses and this is a no-brainer.

Billecart-Salmon "Le Rosé" Champagne
Review Date: 05-04-2022
The Billecart Rosé is the epitome of the grace and craft that we have come to associate with champagne. Its rich fruit profile of strawberries, cherries and cream is complemented by subtle notes of herbs and a touch of salinity, and the power of the fruit is hoisted effortlessly on the finish by mineral and acidity. This is our best selling rosé for a good reason.

Pierre Mineral Brut Rosé Champagne
Review Date: 05-04-2022
Most of this delicious rosé is Grand Cru Chardonnay from Mesnil, which makes the price unbelievable. This is a gorgeous, delicate and endlessly expressive wine with bright fruit notes of strawberry and raspberry, citrus and cherries, chalky minerality and a clean, bright finish highlighted by subtle yeasty brioche. If you love rose champagne like we do, don't miss this.

Ariston Aspasie "Brut Prestige" Champagne
Review Date: 03-13-2022
The entire Aspasie line represents incredible Champagne value, but for me, the "Brut Prestige" is unmatched in terms of quality for the money. The particularly old vines (60-years) produce a unique concentration of black cherry/green apple fruit, while the extended time on lees provides plenty of nutty, honey, cream and floral elements that make this a stunning bottle of Champagne.

2010 Haut-Bailly, Pessac-Léognan
Review Date: 03-09-2022
Ask any seasoned Bordeaux drinker about Pessac Leognan and the one thing that's sure to come up is the minerals. As mysterious and unbelievable as it is for the flavor of the gravelly soil and white quartz to travel through the roots and the veins into the grapes, I beseech you to smell this wine. Yes, it has the dark currants, the potent violets, licorice and smoke of great Cabernet Sauvignon, but it also has an unmistakable and unique stony earthy aroma that is totally complementary to every other flavor present. It has an incredible balance that seems to highlight every corner and nuance of the wine, with nothing overpowering anything else. This is a testament to the unmatchable terroir of this top Pessac Leognan property.

Jean-Jacques Lamoureux "Trilogie" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 02-23-2022
This is why people in-the-know choose K&L for their champagne needs! These are small-production, grower producer bubbles that spend an astounding five years aging to perfection on the lees, for well under $40! A classic blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay that spends time in neutral oak barrels, this has rich flavors of Norman apple, Meyer lemon, and white peach with subtle baguette yeast and a beautiful open-knit texture that is lifted by fine bead and bright, integrated acidity. It was a total hit when we opened it for the staff!

Laurent-Perrier Blanc de Blancs Brut Nature Champagne
Review Date: 12-08-2021
Now officially one of my favorite Blanc de Blancs! The richness of the Grand and Premier Cru Chardonnay shines through with no added dosage and the balance is impeccable. Citrus-y apple fruit, floral aromas, a touch of nuttiness, subtle smoke and toast from the lees contact and a bright, long finish with no cloying sweetness. One glass was not enough on this one.

2016 Labégorce, Margaux
Review Date: 10-28-2021
This wine is incredibly good! Located right next to first growth Margaux, Margaux with freshly rebuilt winemaking facilities, Labegorce is one of the best deals in Margaux right now. The 2016 is full bodied with rich, pure dark cherry, blueberry and cassis fruit and great minerality. The ripe tannins are seamlessly integrated, and subtle toast from oak aging is right on point, not overdone. As good as this is now, it will surely age well for multiple decades.

Ariston Aspasie "Réserve" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 09-29-2021
A great amount of effort and care goes into Aspasie Reserve, and it is instantly clear when you taste it. Low temperature macerated in small volume, then lightly filtered and aged for an impressive five years on the lees, it is a true wonder that the cost is not much higher than it is. Bright, pure flavors of Anjou pear, granny smith apple, toasted pastry dough, and hisbiscus, with a light creamy texture and crisp acidity never fail to impress even the most discerning champagne drinkers.

Billecart-Salmon "Sous Bois" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 09-29-2021
For those who enjoy the added nuance and luxury a subtle addition of oak lends to champagne, the Sous Bois is a superbly executed example from an excellent champagne house. The base of bright Anjou pear and granny smith apples is enhanced by nuances of vanilla, baking spice and a touch of cocoa. The added frame of oak gives great weight and added luxury to an already excellent wine.

2018 Palmer, Margaux
Review Date: 08-02-2021
This wine is stunning. It was made from 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 7% Petit Verdot. It has a robust bouquet of spicy blackberries and black cherry, violets, and licorice with the essence of jam on toast. The mid-palate was replete with rich fruit, while the tannins were integrated and smooth, retaining Palmer's signature elegance and femininity in the face of all that power. The low production numbers and the high quality make this a wine to buy on futures, as it is sure to be a rare sight on retail shelves.

Louis Roederer "Collection 242" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 07-29-2021
What a thrill to taste "Collection," a revamping of Roederer's flagship non-vintage cuvée, and a commitment to top quality production standards and consumer transparency. With added reserve wines from a perpetual solera-style system, lower dosage and added Chardonnay contents overall, this is a substantial improvement over an already-great blend. It has added brightness, precision, integration without losing any of the signature leesy, smokey, toasty richness.

Bollinger "Special Cuvée" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 06-22-2021
This is magically rich champagne (about 30% spends time in barrel) made from 50% reserve wines that are actually painstakingly aged in magnum sized bottles. The result is a plush, complex profile of dried apricots, pears, peaches, and honeyed almonds that are balanced wonderfully by vibrant acidity. The long, arduous production method means that it requires the relatively low dosage of 9g to balance out the rich profile.

Franck Bonville Grand Cru Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne
Review Date: 12-17-2020
Olivier Bonville carries on the tradition of his grandfather, Franck, producing wines of incredible finesse and complexity with his own prized vines in the Grand Cru villages of Avize and Mesnil on the Cote de Blancs. It has rich flavors of Anjou pear, Meyer lemon, white apricots and a touch of delicate spice with the lovely chalky minerality and zippy acidity that the Cote de Blancs is famous for. When you consider that similar offerings from the Big Houses cost three to four times more, this becomes a must-buy for anyone who dabbles in Champagne.

Laurent-Perrier "Cuvée Rosé" Brut Rosé Champagne
Review Date: 07-21-2020
Everything about Laurent Perrier's Cuvée Rosé is rich and seductive: the deep pink hue, the lush Pinot Noir fruit flavor, the silky texture. The fruit, entirely Grand Cru Pinot Noir, is destemmed, crushed and left in contact with the skins for an unusually long 72 hours, before being vinified and aged on the lees for four years. The result is a wine rich in the pure flavors of strawberries, raspberries, black cherries and hazelnuts with a creamy texture, crisp bubbles, and incredible length. This is a very delicious — and unique—rosé Champagne.

Four Roses "Small Batch Select" Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml)
Review Date: 11-27-2019
Four Roses combined six of their popular mash bills to create a whiskey that is greater than the sum of the parts, as indicated by its Whisky Advocate recognition as Third Best Whiskey in the World. Supremely sippable at 104 proof, but packing a punch of flavor nonetheless. A perfect combination of baking spice, creamy pear and apricot richness, rye spice, and a touch of mint. At this price, it's the perfect sipping/mixing/nosing bourbon to keep at the home bar, and it's a permanent fixture at the distillery, so supply should be no problem on this one.

2007 Haut-Bailly, Pessac-Léognan
Review Date: 06-26-2019
This is the best price on a great classic Pessac powerhouse that I’ve seen. It has an intoxicating nose that includes red cherry, cigar box, dusty minerals, smoke and cedar. Sweet cherry kirsch comes out on the palate along with silky tannins and a wonderful integration of flavors. This will continue to age gracefully.

2018 Domaine de Chevalier Rouge, Pessac-Léognan
Review Date: 05-17-2019
This was one of our last stops on the en primeur campaign and it seemed by design. This was one of the best wines of the entire trip. The power and concentration were immediately evident, as rich notes of dark fruit, graphite and minerals took over the bouquet. On the palate the fruit took more of a red tone with nice sweetness, minerals and herbs, and the structure was impeccable as the tannins and acidity were already well integrated and balanced with a beautiful fruit driven finish.

2016 Siaurac, Lalande de Pomerol
Review Date: 05-15-2019
I’m perennially impressed by this wine. Siaurac is located on an extension of the Pomerol plateau and has a relatively high proportion of Cabernet Franc at 20%. The result is a very complex, expressive wine with a beautiful perfume, bright flavors of red and blue fruit with mint and herbs, and great structure from a generous but balanced oak regimen. If you’ve tried any of the recent back vintages we have (like the 2010, in stock now) you know it ages superbly.

2008 Dom Pérignon Brut Champagne
Review Date: 09-20-2018
This has a very aromatic, supple nose of bristling minerals, meyer lemon, apricots, acacia honey, and toasted pastry with just a touch of smoke. On the palate, it has classic 2008 intensity and concentration of fruit, with a dense core of white fruits, apricots and lemons, subtle autolytics, and amped up acidity that perfectly balances the richness, making this beautiful complex wine dance effortlessly across the palate. DP has knocked it out of the park with the 2008 vintage.

Launois "Veuve Clemence" Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne

2008 Louis Roederer "Cristal" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 06-05-2018
The world has been patiently awaiting the arrival of the highly anticipated 2008 vintage of Cristal from Roederer, and in this instance the patience will prove particularly rewarding. The vintage was marked by a very long, cool growing period that allowed for that special combination of high ripeness and acidity that marks truly great champagnes. This shows bright, fresh and concentrated flavors of stone fruit, citrus, apples, ranier cherries and white flowers, with subtle notes of hazelnuts and saffron. The flavors are fresh, balanced and integrated, indicating incredible aging potential, and the finish just goes on and on. This will be a collectors vintage, so grab yours before they snap them all up.

Pol Roger "Réserve" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 11-29-2017
Pol Roger, long the favorite Champagne House of the Royal Family of Great Britain, takes special steps towards exceptional quality in their Brut Reserve. The nonvintage cuvée is an equal blend of the three allowed varieties, which are double cold-settled and slow fermented in the particularly cold cellar (9°C) entirely in stainless steel. The result is incredibly pure fruit flavors of lemon citrus, apples and stone fruit with a generous, creamy texture from the 9g/L dosage and extended lees aging, during which each bottle is hand-riddled. Considering the process, this is and always has been a great value in bubbles.

2009 Louis Roederer "Cristal" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 11-07-2017
Among the prestige cuvées in Champagne, Louis Roederer’s Cristal stands out for its delicacy, purity and precision. It is made entirely from mid-slope Grand Cru vines, with no malolactic fermentation and seven years of lees aging. Even in its relative youth, the 2009 displays a meticulous nature: mouth watering, fresh citrus fruit and white flower flavors with subtle underlying pastry notes that meld seamlessly with the richness from the long lees aging. This impressive vintage will last at least 30 years, so set a couple aside!

Charles Heidsieck "Brut Réserve" Champagne

In a lineup with 12 other Grand Marques, Champagne Charlie was at the top of my list of favorites. The Brut Reserve uses up to 20-year-old reserve wines for 40% of its blend and combines the flavors of fresh stone fruit and pears with quince and dried apricots for a rich, but ultimately refreshing and vibrant profile.
