Taittinger "La Française" Brut Champagne

SKU #1023646 91 points John Gilman

Outer quote mark The current release of Taittinger’s non-vintage Brut 'la Française' is comprised of a cépages of forty percent Chardonnay, thirty-five percent Pinot Noir and twenty-five percent Pinot Meunier. It is aged between three and four years sur latte prior to disgorgement, so I suspect that this is from the base year of 2015. The wine offers up a bright and classy bouquet of apple, lemon, chalky soil tones, bread dough and a gently smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is crisp, full-bodied and very nicely balanced, with a good core, elegant mousse and lovely length and grip on the fairly complex finish. This is a very good iteration of Brut 'la Française'. Inner quote mark (12/2020)

Outer quote mark The latest release of Taittinger's NV Brut La Française is decidedly youthful out of the gates, offering up notes of green apple, warm biscuits, fresh bread and citrus oil. Medium-bodied, bright and pillowy, with tangy acids and a fleshy core of fruit, it concludes with an elegantly chalky finish. Its cut and structure will reward a bit of bottle age. Outer quote mark There's a toasty edge to this creamy Champagne, which shows apple tarte Tatin, mandarin orange peel, brioche and smoke. Subtle finish. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. (AN, Web-2022) Inner quote mark

This is one nonvintage brut from a Grand Marque that is well worth the money. The blend is 40% Chard, 35% Pinot, 25% Meunier and spends nearly 4 years on the lees in stainless steel. The result is vibrant, pure flavors of apples and pears with an underlying toastiness that accents the fruit.

Taittinger has always been known for the creamy refreshment that the La Francaise has delivered so consistently through the years. If you like a little bit of toast balanced by some citric zing, this high Chardonnay blend is for you!

I was quite taken aback by the quality of wine in this major brand-labeled bottle. The Taittinger "La Francaise" is a wonderful combination of leesy richness with firm acidity, that glides effortlessly over the palate, hitting all the right notes. The finish is full of citrus and rich, bready flavors. It tastes like it should cost twice as much. It tastes way better than 2003 Dom, which does cost twice as much.
