Whisky Advocate: "Although only two years older, this expression of Hakushu — the first to be launched in the U.S. — shows a fleshier side to the distillery’s wares. While it has retained the freshness of the 10 year old, it shows more pineapple and grapefruit on the nose, with a little fragrance of jasmine and osmanthus. On the palate, it’s fresh and lively with a hint of persimmon and a tickle of smoke. Recommended. (DB, Spring 2012)" K&L Notes: Suntory's Hakushu, known as the "forest distillery," was built in 1973 as a sister distillery to Suntory's ...

This beautiful cask of Blair Athol is truly the star of our 2023 campaign. We rarely get access to such exceptional old malt and if you've been following the K&L Exclusives, this will easily compare to the wonderful 25 year Cragganmore we sold last year. The Blair Athol malt is an absolute dream and when you put it into high quality casks, it can produce one of the Highland's most complex and delicious whiskies. Founded in 1798 by John Steward and Robert Robertson, it changed hands many times until eventually being mothballed in 1932. IT was after that t...

A rare independently bottled Aberlour, made that much more unusual by its maturation in a first fill sherry butt. The Aberlour distillery sits on the edge of its namesake, a gorgeous little hamlet right at the center of the Speyside region. The distillery seems tiny from the outside, but the malt here packs a punch. Founded in 1879 by James Fleming, it's become a pillar of the Chivas family in the last two decades since the French spirits giant Pernod Ricard purchased the distillery. Outfitted with 4 stills in the early 70s, it can produce nearly 4 milli...

Disco #9 is here and K&L has exclusive first rights to sell it in California. Aptly named, the series has always been about unique combinations of whiskies that are impeccably blended to maximize deliciousness. They often include rare ingredients in unusal combinations, but they always taste amazing. The 9th edition features a backbone built on a mysterious 8 year old Georgia produced Bourbon with an unusual Four Grain mashbill: Corn 80% / Wheat 10% / Rye 5% / Malted Barley 5%. This makes up 35% of the blend. The next largest component is 12 year old KY ...

Domaine du Cardinat has been in the Lalanne family for over a century. Farmer and grandfather of the current proprietor, Patricia Singh, built the family home at the domaine 100 years ago and cultivated the land long before that. In 1935, Joseph Lalanne's sudden death thrust Patricia's father, Camille into the fields forcing him to leave school and commit his life to the family domaine. Just four years later, Camille planted the first vines at the domaine and his life was devoted to this patient passion. There he worked tirelessly to produce great brandy...

The lovely Auchroisk distillery has been a favorite of blenders and independent bottlers alike since its founding in 1972. It offers consistently delicious creamy Speyside character, a wonderful base malt to build a blend around. The distillery in Mulben has also been used for vatting of the J&B Highland malts before blending at the main J&B facility to the south. We've had many wonderful Auchroisk over the years and we've managed to keep the prices unreasonably low on these lovely casks. This one was filled into an old sherry butt in 2010 and bottled at...

It seems like forever since we've had 20+ year old blue chip distilleries on the docket for a reasonable price. It's getting harder and harder to secure these casks, and this one is a veritable coup. Distilled in June of 2000 and bottled in October of 2022, this 22 year old beauty is finally on our shores. Aged in a refill Hogshead, this is all about the spirit and time. Elegant, leathery, briny, sweet barley, and chock full of that lovely peat that only really comes with long years in cask. Bottled without chill filtration or coloring at its natural cas...

This unprecedented cask of Ardmore is as unusual as it is delicious. The famous Highland peater was built at Kennethmont, Aberdeenshire in 1898. The spiritual home of the once popular Teacher's Highland Cream, its original owner was in fact the son of the founder of that brand, Adam Teacher. One of the last distillers to use coal to fire their stills, this barrel was distilled prior to their transition to gas in 2001. It boasts the ability to produce nearly 5.5 million liters of pure alcohol a year with 8 working stills. Nearly all of that is made with h...

We dreamed for years of creating a delicious, interesting expression of blended Scotch whisky that we could feature under our Faultline label at a value driven price. We were close many times, but either the quality of the whisky or the cost of the barrels proved prohibitive. We didn't want to make a $25 bottle of whisky just for the sake of it. After working on and off with our bottler for over a year-long blending process, we hammered out a profile we were finally happy with. Big smoke, Ardbeg-like peat flavors, and a kiss of sweet grain was our goal, ...

The unprecedented Tres Vieux Brut de Fut is one of the most memorable and unique offerings from any producer in Cognac. Bouju is well known for speaking out in the region against the use of additives and has carved out a niche as one of the few Grand Champagne producers willing to offer unfiltered, uncut, full-strength Cognac. This brandy is the house's top offering and represents some of the oldest stocks with a minimum age of 40 years. The color is dark like coffee and when we inquired about that insanely dark color, Bouju explained that long term agin...

Our esteemed Los Angeles colleague, Will Blakely, took the reins on his first trip to Maker's Mark this April when the spirits team built the latest Maker's Mark barrel. Ultimately under Will's leadership we settled on a unique stave profile featuring 4 baked American P2 staves, 1 Maker's 46 stave, 3 of the new Roasted French Mendiant staves, and 2 Toasted French Spice. In the 9 weeks the barrel spends in Maker's Mark's cold cellar (the very same location that aged the recent Cellar Aged Release which sold out in a flash) each stave imparted its unique p...

If you didn't already know, we're huge fans of the bucolic Blair Athol distillery just outside the highland resort town of Pitlochry. The stone walls covered in ivy at this, the spiritual home of the Bell's Blended Scotch, are one reason we love this exceptional whisky. If you do manage to make it to this special distillery, you might notice giddy septuagenarian fans of the UK only Bell's Blend swarming the small distillery like it was vatican, but it is the VIP warehouse tour that keeps us going back. That's because nothing beats Blair Athol straight fr...

The old distillery just to the north of Port Askaig was founded in 1881. It's become one of the best loved Islay malts, despite its normally gentle character. We've had several lovely casks of naked Bunnah over the last few years, but this one truly stands out. The great northern Islay distiller is renowned for capturing that ocean character without relying on heavy peat smoke. In fact, the distillery makes sure to note that their whisky contain less than 2 ppm of phenol, making it one of two regularly produced unpeated Islay malts, but this little whisk...

There was once a time when old grain was completely under appreciated. That meant we could snag very old casks for next to nothing. But the market has changed, The days of 50 year old grain for $300 are long gone. We do occasionally see good old grain, but often the prices are not far off what you've expect to see on a single malt, and one thing we cannot stand for is overpriced single grain. So we wait and watch the market and eventually we come across a great cask like this that offers three full decades of maturation for what seems like last century's...

It's comical to think Laphroaig is charging $350 for their official bottling single casks that are 7 years old! We obvioulsy passed on that because we are still finding exceptional gems like this. Here we have a 10 year old for just $90! All that big bombastic peat and iodine in a classic ex-Bourbon cask giving the balaced vanilla and creamy malt center stage. At 53.5% ABV and without coloring or chill filtration, this is surely one of the best ways to add more of Islay's Southern shore to your life.

Bardstown Bourbon Company has finally come of age. This incredible distillery produced the Kentucky distillate for a huge number of brands and has set the world on fire with release after release of fabulous and interesting blends and collaborations. It is now finally their time to shine with 6 year old releases of 100% their own distillate. This 48% ABV high rye mashbill is the best of classic Bourbon profiles with a burst of rye spice. It is respectably aged at 6 years, extremely sharply priced, and comes in BBCs beautiful premium packaging. A beautifu...

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Made with 10 internationally sourced botanicals--Seville orange peel, Italian orris root, et al.--this gin rings with plenty of juniper and licorice upfront, followed by lavender and citrus peel. Finishes smooth and mellow. (KN)" (08/2015) K&L Notes: Sipsmith is the first new copper-distilled London gin to actually be made in London in the last 200 years—as most production has moved to Scotland for economic reasons. The boys at the distillery have awoken a new movement of pride in London distillates: the term "London dry gin...

From Buffalo Trace Distillery, Blanton's holds the distinction of being the world's first regularly released single-barrel bourbon. This exceptional brand was launched in 1984 and named for the legendary leaders of that historic distillery outside of Frankfurt, Albert B. Blanton. The brand, which is produced and distributed by Sazerac at the Buffalo Trace Distillery, is owned by the previous owners of the distillery a Japanese company called, Age International. Over the last several years, Blanton's has become one of the most sought-after and inaccessibl...

There's no amount of Caol Ila that we're not interested in. This wonderful distillery on the northern shore of Islay remains one of the great values for independent bottlers. The gorgeous maritime character and medium peat style is an approachable way into the Islay category, but isn't in the slightest bit too tame for seasoned peat lover. The old distillery was founded in 1846 overlooking the Islay Strait for which its name. Across from the distillery the majestic paps of Jura sit calmly in the distance. Considering the incredible volumes this distiller...

While the average price for Campeon Anejo Tequila in 750ml hovers around $85/btl, we've practially stolen the 200ml bottles and they're available for just $9.99! That equates to just $37.50 for a 750ml. It's well over 50% off the going rate for this Anejo.

92 points Whisky Advocate: "Sweet, with subtle, crisp, nutty oak, then comes fudge, ripe banana, and peach. The overall effect is like eating vanilla ice cream with toffee fudge and hazelnut sprinkles. The structure is thick and physical, the palate sweet and quite fat, with light hints of raspberry, fruit salad. A jag of acidity freshens the delivery on the finish. With water there’s more toffee, and it becomes slightly more yielding, with less oak. For me the gold standard of grain. (DB, Fall 2015)" 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "The name of this whisky ...

Produced by Great Women Spirits in California, Ada Lovelace Gin honors the famous English mathematician often referred to as the worl'd first computer programmer. Created with the Maritni in mind, this gin incoporates a mix of 10 old and new world botanicals in a 100% wheat based spirit. A proper juniper and citrus backbone supports more new world botanicals like lavender and ginger. Oh, and for a limited time it's half off the regular price!

The Very Olde St. Nick brand is generally well received for its excellent quality, but complained about for its high prices. We've fixed that by chopping the price in half! The Ancient Cask 8 Year Old Rye is stupendous. Golden straw in color and lusciously smooth it's a bit of a dichotomy on the palate. It has tremendous sweetness and weight, but immense rye spice at the same time.

Even at this young age, a cask of Longmorn is a real rarity. Arguably the crown jewel of the Chivas portfolio, this wonderful distillery was once rather plentiful on the independent bottlers market. Gordon & Macphail has been the most prolific bottler of this special distillery, owing likely to the fact that they still own the original trademark for the label, but in the last 10 years we've seen very little. Located outside the city of Elgin, a stone's throw from their rival BenRiach, we only see the occasional distillery release stateside. The distiller...

94 points Whisky Advocate: "For Nikka From the Barrel, it’s been a long road to Whisky of the Year. This Japanese blend made its U.S. debut in 2018, but its inception dates back more than 30 years. In 1985, Nikka Whisky Distilling Company’s blending team, led by Shigeo Sato, designed this whisky using both malt and grain whiskies produced at Nikka’s Yoichi and Miyagikyo Distilleries. When taking into account the full array of casks—bourbon barrels, sherry butts, refill hogsheads, and more—over 100 different constituent whiskies are enlisted.

A true gem from the Angel's Envy single barrel program. The brand that brought cask finishing in Bourbon into the mainstream continues to bottle stellar Kentucky Straight Bourbon with that added kick of quality port wine barrels. For years the only high proof offering from the brand was the meager handful of cask strength bottles we received each year which sell for hundreds of dollars and were virtually unobtainable. Now we can lock in a full barrel at 55% ABV (the same proof as the highly sought after Russell's Single Barrels) and just a couple of poin...

100 points Spirit Journal: "JCB Gin is enhanced by the native flora that grows in the Biodynamically farmed vineyard gardens on the Boisset property. Dandelion, chamomile, lemon balm, and more than 40 other botanicals (including 30 organic plants) are infused into this London Dry–style gin. Essence of sunflower, lilacs, and verbena come to life on the nose as the liquid, dotted with white pepper and caper berries, melts across the palate. Violets thread through the herbs for a spring garden effect throughout." K&L Notes: Special Order Only! Will take 3-7...

Created by Casa San Nicolas in Arandas, Mayenda Tequila uses some innovative techniques to amp up the flavor in a natural way. The first is through maceration. Before the final distillation, roasted piñas of Blue Weber agave and agave miel are macerated in the base distillate. This adds a more intense flavor of ripe and cooked agave to the final tequila in the same way botanicals are added to most gins. The result is a super flavorful and intense tequila that blends the art of traditional production with creative technique that doesn't rely on adjuncts t...

Whisky Advocate: "Earthy notes of dried leaves, cut grass, and dried herbs on the nose. A thick palate, with cooked berries, grape jelly, tobacco leaf, and chile pepper. This is powerful and needs water, which brings out cocoa, coffee ice cream, cinnamon bun, and bitter oak. On the finish, the oak integrates with orange candy, cherries, cinnamon, camp coffee, and chocolate. Overall very flavorful, though perhaps just a bit barrel-forward. The gorgeous Benriach distillery is one of Speyside's most unique. The distillery, built in 1898, was promptly purchased and shuttered by nearby Longmorn Distillers and remained silent for many decades. It was purchased in 1965 by the Glenlivet Co. and refurbished before being sold to Seagram's in the late '70s. It was always a hub of experimentation and remains filled with crazy expressions and unusual cask fills, with both peated and floor malted versions. It's rather rare to see independently bottled Benriach, but it seems Alistair Hart's relationship...

The rare Blanton's Gold has become beloved by connoisseurs and collectors world wide. The ultimate single barrel bourbon and founder of the category, Blanton's has become one of the most asked for and hardest to obtain bourbons on the market today. We've found some limited stocks of European bound product that would otherwise have not been available. The famous "Gold" Blanton's is so named for its unique golden horse and golden writing. Villa De Varda was founded by the Dolzan family in the early1800s and is today being run by the 6th generation. Each generation has carefully taken their forefathers knowledge and expertise and yet judiciously improved the grappa making process as advancements in distillation technology and farming practices made better and better distillate possible. Today the Mezzolombardo distillery embodies the height of Trentino Grappa. While all grappa is made from pomace, not everyone uses someone else’s byproduct to make their spirit. Varda sets out to grow grape...

This little find comes from an undisclosed distillery on the Isle of Islay. While the bottler is prohibited from confirming the source, the whisky world seems to be pretty confident that this single malt came from the special distillery on the south side of the island. This distillery, which boasts its own malt floors, seven stills and one of the most flavorful spirits in the business is widely considered the King of Islay. The wild ocean character and deep peaty richness is the key here. Add an unbeatable price, 50% ABV, and we've got your newly minted ...

This espadin (A. Angustifolia) mezcal is the perfect pick for anyone starting to explore the world of quality mezcal or as a relatively inexpensive option for mezcal-based cocktails. It's very approachable and laden with sweet agave fruit. The smoke component is decidedly there, but not very intense, as one would expect with a well-made mezcal. A rich texture makes this a delightful sipper or stout component in a mezcal variant of the Last Word. Gold medal winner in Tequila Aficionado's 2021 Brands of Promise.

Macduff sits well under the radar in the single-malt world. The official bottling from the distillery goes by the name of Deveron - the river on which the distillery sits. The only Macduff the world sees comes from the independent bottlers. And with the current ownership falling to Dewar's under the Bacardi umbrella, it is a wonder we see any at all. Fortunately, this 12-year-old hogshead snuck away from corporate ownership and wound up in our hands. Bottled at 57.9% ABV without chill filtration or coloring, it's a beautiful malt highlighting sweet vanil...

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "This New Zealand vodka—distilled from whey—is smooth, clean, sweet and surprisingly full bodied for a vodka, featuring light vanilla and anise notes. (KN)" (02/2013) K&L Notes: You read correctly, this vodka is distilled from whey! Before you start thinking of Little Miss Muffet, let me tell you that this might be the best vodka we carry in the entire store, period. The purity of the distillate and the clean finish will destroy all faith in big brand loyalty. Try a bottle of the Broken Shed and just try going back to your st...

The wonderful Auchroisk distillery is one of Speyside's truly unsung heroes. Often filled into subpar casks, intended only for blending, its unique character can still shine through even when the wood is lacking. Add a great, high-quality barrel and you've got a recipe for a gem. The fact that it's so affordable shouldn't scare off the more discerning malt nuts out there. We're the lucky beneficiaries of some outstanding relationships in Scotland, which has afforded us unparalleled access and pricing in the market. The Auchroisk distillery is relatively...

It has been quite some time since we've had an official Highland Park Single Cask straight from the distillery and we are thrilled to offer this at the sharpest pricing we've seen in the program in years. This epic first fill full sized European oak sherry butt delivers a massive Orkeny experience at a whopping 66.1% ABV. The jewel of the Orkney Islands is famous for its heather peat offering a gentle floral toned smoke and its impeccable use of sherry maturation, both are on full display here.

The excellent producer in Zoqui has been a staple of the Melate portfolio. Here they've released a tiny batch of wild harvest Coyote. Roasted for 5 days underground and crushed on Tahona, the rare agave is fermented in pine vats for 4 days before being double distilled on tiny copper pots. The rare and revered Coyote is recently taxinomically described as Agave Lyobaa, but producers believe it to be a cross between Tobala (potatorum and seemaniana) and Madrecuishe (Karwinskii). It is impossible to know if your Madrecuishe seeds will produce Coyote and th...

While there seems to be no shortage of Orkney malt on the market, there is a serious dearth of it at screaming good prices. For just 80 bucks this famous Ornkey distillery at cask strength and a respectable 14 years is a heck of a deal. Aged in a refill hogshead this shows off that beautiful heathery peat that the distillery is famous for. Bottled at its natural cask strength of 51.7% and without coloring or chill filtration.

The exceptional distillery at the base of Scotland's tallest peak is quickly becoming rarer than hen's teeth. Owned by Nikka, the famous Japanese distiller, they've publicly announced that they would not be selling casks to blenders and bottlers going forward. The brand is not well known in the states as they've neglected to sell the malts here for some time, but the whiskies are used in a number of the excellent Nikka blends and that's likely where the stocks are going. Despite the announcement, we've managed to snag a string of young exceptionally high...

The exceptional Ford's Gin is one of the most versatile London Drys on the market. Distilled at the exceptional Thames Distillery by master distiller Charles Maxwell and the famous Simon Ford. They start with a base of Italian juniper and coriander seed, and the recipe is expanded thoughtfully to include bitter oranges, lemon and grapefruit peel. Subtle jasmine and orris add a soft floral quality, while spicy angelica root and cassia bark give it some structure. I've always noted a smidge of cucumber, but the distiller won't cop to it. Anyway, the mixtur...

Dalmore is one of those malts that will forever be controversial. They've made a name for themselves selling old sherry barrels at astronomical prices, but we rarely see the malt bottled as single barrel or at cask strength. When we do come across the odd independent bottling, it's almost always in 2nd or 3rd fill barrels destined otherwise for some big-name blend and while those can be lovely whiskies, they simply don't capture the essence of The Dalmore like you might expect. That is, of course, because the brand has become synonymous with sherry aging...

The vineyards of Ragnaud-Sabourin stretch far over the hills in Grande Champagne, 33 hectares of Ugni Blanc, with a bit of Folle Blanche, as far as the eye can see. This estate is known throughout France for having the goods, and we couldn't have been more impressed after visiting the property. Today the estate is run by Annie Sabourin, who is the daughter of the late Marcel Ragnaud, and she makes sure every drop lives up to the property's reputation. The collection of Ragnaud-Sabourin selections we tasted were spellbinding and easily one of the most pol...

The gorgeous Benrinnes malt is one we've come to seek out. All it needs is a bit of good wood and a decade or so. We've rarely found such inviting and approachable pure Speysiders of this quality at such exceptional prices. This 10-year malt comes in at a price point that is untouchable by our competitors for single-cask Scotch bottled at cask strength and without chill filtration or color added.
