A transparent ruby hue, the 2022 Barolo Brunate Le Coste combines refined depth with a sense of weightless beauty. Aromas of black raspberries, polished flowers, graphite, and alpine herbs lift from the glass. Medium-bodied, it carries slightly broader shoulders on the palate, with notes of blood orange, cranberry, and redcurrant. The blend is roughly 80% Brunate with the remainder from Le Coste, whose sandy soils contribute finesse and aromatic lift. Brunate was among the vineyards most affected by drought in 2022, and production was roughly half of normal, yet the wine retains striking complexity and balance. Drink 2027-2047. 7,000 bottles were produced. (AF)

The Ettore Germano 2022 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba is a dark, rich expression with aromas of black fruit, dried cherry, pencil shavings and dark smoke. The warm vintage brings added structure and volume, qualities that are immediately apparent in the glass. Fermented with 20 to 30 days of skin contact and aged for two years in large oak casks followed by another year in bottle, the wine remains faithful to the muscular character of Serralunga d'Alba. There is a moment of leanness across the mid-palate that reins in the wine's otherwise generous profile. Production is 15,000 bottles. (ML)

On the nose, it is notably exotic and saline, offering unique aromas of seashells and marine minerals alongside floral notes of summer flowers and mint. The palate is lighter in weight than typical La Morra Barolos but possesses great depth, showing succulent red berries, cherries, and a touch of caramel. It is characterized by its elegance and lean, sinewy structure, with a distinct salty, soil-driven finish that reflects its limestone-rich terroir.

The Cavallotto 2022 Barolo Bricco Boschis, the estate's most historic bottling, shines bright and defies the challenging vintage, luring you in with heady aromas of violet, freshly cut hay, eucalyptus, ripe berry, leather and hints of forest floor. Made with vines averaging 55-years-old, it boasts structure and the nervous energy one expects of a young Barolo, delivering delicious layers of raspberry tart, cherry compote, candied orange slice, vanilla and licorice set against a backbone of velvety tannins. Between the estate’s cool, high-altitude sites, soil specificities, and a reductive winemaking style, Giulia Negri’s wines can be austere and wiry, particularly in their youth, and this is accentuated in 2022. The most outgoing and generous of her three Barolos (relatively speaking) is La Tartufaia. Fragrances recall rhubarb preserve, mint, tarragon and juniper. While lightweight and fine-framed, it fills the space with wild strawberry and earthy forest notes before a biting mineral finish. Tight and clenched, it simmers with flavour intensity and transparency. (MM)

A jeweled ruby color, the 2022 Barolo Bricco delle Viole saw one of the largest crop losses in the vintage, with roughly 20 to 30 percent of the fruit lost. Aromas of cherry cordial, framboise, preserved roses, and fresh lavender lead into a stunning palate that is pure, long, and beautifully balanced. As is often the case, this cuvée stands out in the range and may well be among the highlights of the vintage across the region. Drink 2026-2046. (AF) 98+

The Massolino 2021 Barolo reveals a shiny ruby color and a core of dark fruit. Beyond the plummy fruit is tar, licorice, pressed flower and campfire ash. This wine has a pronounced savory side, yet it all fits squarely into a very delicate and finessed delivery. This is a pretty example of the vintage. (ML)

A blend of fruit from three MGA sites (Bricco Chiesa, Capalot and Fiasco), the Oddero 2021 Barolo reveals cassis and dried cherry, but it also shows extra spice and smoke at the back. You get mineral nuances over a well-structured and firm Nebbiolo. This wine requires a little extra time before it fully opens. Once it does, it offers a beautiful mouthfeel with zesty freshness, minerality and lots of energy. It undergoes a spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel, and the wine ages in botte grande for 24 months. Production is 48,000 bottles, and the wine is priced competitively. (ML)

Fresh flavors of sour cherry, strawberry, rose hip and rhubarb are the main themes, with accents of eucalyptus and iron. My favorite wine of the flight, the Barale Fratelli 2021 Barolo del Comune di Barolo hints at some of the savory notes (like cured meat and dried tobacco leaf) that we saw in the rest of the range; however, this wine has a stronger and fresher fruit side with cherry and blackberry. It is fermented in stainless steel and matured in French botti for 30 months. (ML)

You could argue that this is the wine with the fasting growing quality trajectory because this vineyard site is one of those rare places in the appellation that appears to improve despite (or more likely because of) a changing climate. Ravera enjoys an open panorama (at 400 to 440 meters in elevation) that extends to the snow-capped Alps and benefits from cooler air currents, coupled with an amazing quality of light that you notice with the naked eye. The 2021 Barolo Ravera saw its fruit harvested later than the other wines, on October 11th, and continued with a classic Vietti-style fermentation with 20-plus days of skin contact. Simply put, what Ravera offers is complexity (and strength) with hints of bergamot, citrus, herbs, mineral and salt over a tightly concentrated mouthfeel. The quality of the tannins and the freshness of this 2021 are impressive, and that citrusy note continues with tangerine skin and kumquat. 98+ (ML)

Bright ruby in color, this is a restrained Barolo with wild strawberry, Parma violet, cinnamon and orange peel aromas. The palate is crisp, with dusty tannins, a medium body, good concentration of blood orange flavors, a tight-knit structure and a polished finish. Approachable now due to the balance, but will improve with time. Drink after 2029. (AF)
This Barolo opens up with dried flowers, bark and mushrooms, interwoven with some dried herbs. The palate is medium-bodied with discreet fruit that is somewhat eclipsed by the significant tannin frame that should dissolve with some bottle age. Otherwise, a solid Barolo. Best after 2027. (JGA)
Fruit for the Fratelli Alessandria 2021 Barolo del Comune di Verduno comes from five vineyard sites in Verduno: Riva Rocca, Rocche dell'Olmo, Campasso, Pisapola and Boscato. This was the first Barolo del Comune di Verduno to hit the market (with the 2017 vintage). The bouquet focuses on redcurrant and tart cherry, and there is a pinch of cinnamon buried in there as well. This is a pretty Barolo that manages elegance and an easy-drinking style. This 20,000-bottle release ages in Slavonian and French oak botti for three years. (ML)
The 2021 Barolo has a lovely, layered spice profile on the nose, with bright notes of ripe cherries, fresh flowers, anise, and juniper. It is pure and approachable upfront, with refined tannins and a medium-bodied feel, although it has good richness and elegance. It’s a very harmonious entry Barolo to drink now and over the coming 10-12 years. (AF) 92+
The 2020 Barolo Sperss is a bright red color and reveals an incredibly floral profile of rose petals and ripe strawberries. Aromatically light on its feet, with a joyous feel, on the palate the structure is more focused and compact, with mineral undertones that weave through with more a defined nature. It needs more time, but this is a fantastic red to drink over the coming 30 years. (AF)
Youthful and ripe ruby red in color, the 2020 Barolo Villero has a fantastic bouquet of pure ripe raspberries, wet stones, fresh roses, and sweet sage. Medium-bodied, it’s approachable up front and balanced, with refined tension through the mid-palate, fine tannins, and refreshing acidity. Weightless, with good ripeness, it’s long on the palate and has a lasting perfume of dried apricot. Absolutely lovely , it’s going to offer a wide drinking window over the next 15 or so years. (AF)
