Reviewed July 2026The Cavallotto 2022 Barolo Bricco Boschis, the estate's most historic bottling, shines bright and defies the challenging vintage, luring you in with heady aromas of violet, freshly cut hay, eucalyptus, ripe berry, leather and hints of forest floor. Made with vines averaging 55-years-old, it boasts structure and the nervous energy one expects of a young Barolo, delivering delicious layers of raspberry tart, cherry compote, candied orange slice, vanilla and licorice set against a backbone of velvety tannins. Tangy acidity keeps it lifted. It also shows more aging potential than most 2022 Barolos. (KO)

Tasted from barrel and about to be bottled, the 2022 Barolo Bricco Boschis was fermented in stainless steel and aged 36 months in large Slavonian oak casks. It displays a spicier, more fruit-driven profile, with licorice, toast, dark cherries, black raspberries, and tarry earth. Medium-bodied, it combines ripeness with freshness, with tannins building steadily on the finish. I anticipate it will refine with bottle age and offer more immediacy than the 2021.

Wine Advocate
The organic Cavallotto 2022 Barolo Bricco Boschis is a wine that rewards patience. The bouquet is beautifully detailed, moving from tart red fruit to crushed flowers, grilled herbs and licorice with impressive precision. True to its Castiglione Falletto origins, the fruit remains focused and angular, a hallmark of what I consider to be one of Barolo's most consistently compelling villages. The tannins are prominent and slightly astringent at this stage, but they provide the firm backbone expected from both the site and the vintage. Rather than offering immediate charm, this 2022 emphasizes structure and definition, and it should benefit greatly from another year or two in bottle before reaching a more harmonious phase. Some 22,000 bottles and 1,000 magnums were created.

Notes
The Cavallotto family has owned Bricco Boschis in Castiglione Falletto since 1928 and released its first Barolo under the family name in 1948. The Bricco Boschis bottling draws on Nebbiolo from the Colle Sud Ovest, Punta Marcello and San Giuseppe parcels. Cavallotto works exclusively with grapes from its own vineyards. The 2022 was fermented in stainless steel and matured for 36 months in large Slavonian oak casks.
