Moving north to Verduno, the 2022 Barolo Monvigliero pours a bright ruby hue and remains slightly reserved at this stage, revealing aromas of preserved cranberries, white peach, candied orange, baking spice, ripe apricot, and dried earth. Medium-bodied, it has a more linear feel, with focused acidity and well-defined tannins. Citrus notes lift the palate and carry through a refined finish. Roughly 4,800 bottles were produced. Drink 2027-2040. (AF)

This wine shines with freshness and transparency, full of red currants, red cherries and intense violets against a meaty background. Lightly extracted and medium-bodied, showing crisp, brilliant acidity and velvety tannins. A touch of sternness in the tense, fragrant finish. Drinkable now but best from 2027. (AF)

Violet, exotic dark spice, camphor and whiffs of oak form the nose on the classy 2022 Monvigliero from Paolo Scavino. Full-bodied and loaded with finesse, the palate delivers succulent Morello cherry, licorice, vanilla and bitter orange framed against a backbone of enveloping, velvety tannins. (KO)

This Monvigliero is not ready to talk yet and it does not pretend otherwise. Baked cherries and pressed rose petals draw you in before dried mint and a brooding herbal darkness pull the mood somewhere more serious. The palate is firm and unyielding, dried sour cherries and savory spice building around a core of licorice root that feels like it is still deciding how long it plans to stay closed. Drink from 2028 (JP)

Notes

Monvigliero takes Paolo Scavino’s Nebbiolo north to Verduno, where the estate has bottled this vineyard separately since 2007. The holding faces southeast at approximately 310 meters, on pale, limestone-rich ground crossed by chalky veins. Its position brings the Tanaro River into the vineyard’s climate: the importer describes warm days moderated by cool overnight air from the valley. The vineyard includes plantings from 1968 and 2005.
