James Suckling

Reviewed January 2026
Multilayered yet overt and generous, showing dried violets, potpourri, licorice, cherry pits and pomegranate. Full-bodied and almost salty, with firm, dusty tannins, crisp acidity and a tight yet balanced finish due to great fruit concentration. Warming yet harmonious. October 2026 release. Drink then or hold. (AF)

The Giacomo Conterno 2022 Barolo Arione opens to beautifully perfumed aromas of wild cherry, rose and delicate spice with the finesse and precision that distinguish this celebrated Serralunga d'Alba vineyard. The wine is remarkably open and expressive at this early stage, offering immediate charm rather than the stern, tightly wound personality often associated with young Barolo destined for decades of aging. That early accessibility should not be mistaken for simplicity, however, as the wine retains impressive balance, freshness and layered complexity. (ML)

Even in this warm, dry year, the 2022 Barolo Arione offers tons of the mineral and savory intensity that is such a signature of this site. Sage, dried herbs, graphite, menthol, licorice and white pepper complement a core of deeply layered, dark Serralunga fruit. The rich mid-palate and sustained finish suggest a very bright future. Notes

Roberto Conterno added Arione to the family’s holdings in 2015. The vineyard lies in Serralunga d’Alba, immediately south of Francia, on limestone-rich soils. Arione is bottled separately alongside the estate’s Francia and Cerretta Barolos. The family’s cellar is in Monforte d’Alba, but its Barolo vineyards are concentrated in Serralunga. Giovanni Conterno’s purchase of Cascina Francia in 1974 established that connection; Roberto later expanded it with Cerretta in 2008. The estate’s longstanding cellar approach combines extended contact with the grape skins and maturation in large oak casks.
