Sensational Cellar Gems: Rare, Back-Vintage Finds - 10/03/2024 - Italy Today's new cellar could easily be celebrated for its variety, rarity, and quality—regardless of how you look at it, there’s certainly a lot on offer in every region. Bordeaux leads the way with a duo from the house of Lafite: their famed '10 Duhart and iconic '96 Grand Vin. California features one highlight after another, but those Dunns are certainly not long for our shelves. From Châteauneuf, names like Rayas, Beaucastel, and Janasse showcase the region's top producers. Perhaps the signature of this collection is the simply stunning depth found in Super Tuscans and Brunellos.

2010 Cantemerle, Haut-Médoc
- 5
available
($69.99)
94 points
Chris Kissack:
"At ten years of age the 2010 Cantemerle displays a great colour in the glass, with a dark core surrounded by a dusty, claret-tinged rim. The nose feels warm and smoky, infused with blackcurrant fruits and perfumed with violets, black pepper and a little hint of balsamic. It is a rich and confident opening for this estate, and it reminds me a little of the 1996 vintage (which I always enjoyed, especially as it matured). The palate is immediately textured and richly imbued, maintaining a medium-bodied presence through the middle, where despite the richness of the year it feels savoury, dry and lightly bitter. Underneath it all there is a tense wrapping of tannins, integrated but ultimately still a dominant feature. It finishes long, peppery, energetic and spiced. This is very convincing, a good result for Cantemerle, and surely one of their best vintages ever. Drink or hold." (10/2021) 94 points
James Suckling:
"A wine with blueberry and mineral aromas follows through to a full body, with fine tannins and a juicy finish. Best for years from here." (02/2013) 94 points
Wine Advocate:
"The wine needs a good 7-10 years of cellaring and should keep for 30 more years, but this is the finest Cantemerle I have encountered in my professional career of tasting young vintages (dating back 34 years now). Stunningly deep ruby/purple, with a beautiful nose of spring flowers intermixed with perfumed raspberry and blueberry notes, it exhibits a sort of cool-climate character. Broad, rich and intense on the palate, the wine has plenty of tannins, but they are sweet and well-integrated. Everything is delicately entwined into this beautiful, medium to full-bodied, dense purple wine, which shows stunning character and a prodigious potential for development. This is definitely a major sleeper of the vintage and even better than I thought from barrel. With its 2010, this classified growth located in the southern end of the Medoc may well have made a modern-day version of their legendary 1949. (RP) 94+" (02/2013) 93 points
Vinous:
"The 2010 Cantemerle is vigorous and open on the nose, a mixture of red and black fruit with cedar and humidor scents. I admire the focus and detail. The palate is rounded in texture on the entry. This is a plumper, richer, more fruit-driven 2010 with a lush finish on the context of the growing season. You could broach this now, although I would prefer to leave it another three or four years. This is another excellent wine and candidate for most over-performing cru this vintage. (NM)" (04/2020) 93 points
Jane Anson:
"Precision, lift, character, liquorice, cedar, cigar box, perhaps less silky and enveloping than the 2009 but this is good quality, with evident finesse to the tannic architecture, and a knitted down understated power. You can approach now, but it will comfortably last for another decade from here. Savoury, far more so than the 2009, totally classy. 40% new oak for ageing, Philippe Dambrine director, Eric Boissenot consultant." (03/2025) 92 points
Decanter:
"Plush dark fruit in aroma and flavour, with plenty of extract and a firm tannic base, yet smooth and slick in texture. Still a touch chewy; leave a while. (GH)" (04/2024) 92 points
Wine Enthusiast:
"A great success for this southern Médoc chateau, this is fine, elegant and perfumed. It bursts with a black fruit flavor, balanced by smooth tannins and acidity. *Best Buy* (RV)" (02/2013) 91 points
Wine Spectator:
"Offers a sappy feel, with deliciously pure notes of kirsch and blackberry preserves. Lightly toasted spice and singed anise accents lead to the long, graphite-fueled finish. Should age gracefully. (JM)" (03/2013) K&L Notes: The 2010 is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot. The vineyard is situated on deep gravel deposits in the Macau and Ludon villages of the appellation and has 9,600 vines per hectare. A dense and rich yet elegant Cantemerle from a great vintage.
2010 Duhart-Milon, Pauillac
- 6

($139.99)
95 points
Decanter:
"Gravel over limestone, similar to Château Lafite Rothschild and under the same ownership. Cooler northern exposure of the terroir requires more time to ripen, but that was no problem in 2010. This has ripe fruit with graphite and wet stone. It may not be as dense as Clerc Milon, but the expression of finesse and refinement is unmistakable. Long, subtle finish. Pleasing, high-toned fruit perfectly matches grilled lamb chops with roast potatoes. (PK)" (05/2021) 94 points
Jeb Dunnuck:
"Like a lot of 2010s, the 2010 Duhart-Milon-Rothschild is tight and backward, yet has serious potential. Sporting a deep ruby/purple color and classic notes of currants, lead pencil shavings, cedarwood and saddle leather, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a tight, firm focused texture and beautiful concentration. Its tannins are present, yet ripe and integrated, and it has the purity and freshness thats the hallmark of this great, great vintage. 94+" (12/2017) 94 points
Wine Advocate:
"Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Duhart-Milon rocks up with upfront notions of baked plums, warm cassis and mulberries plus suggestions of cigar box, sandalwood, dried roses and forest floor. Full-bodied, rich and decadent in the mouth, the palate has a beautiful texture of velvety, fantastically ripe tannins and lovely freshness, finishing very long and very classy. (LPB)" (03/2020) 93 points
Vinous:
"The 2010 Duhart-Milon has a backward nose that is going through a dumb phase. There is plenty of fruit here but it is locked down at the moment. The palate is very well defined with crisp acidity, fine-boned tannins and superb balanced. It is not a deep or grippy Pauillac, but it feels...streamlined, athletic and wonderfully poised on the graphite infused finish. Excellent. (NM)" (04/2020) 93 points
Wine Enthusiast:
"Juicy black currant fruit mingles with bright acidity and dark-chocolate tannins. This often overlooked château, with the same production team as Lafite-Rothschild, has an intense and concentrated 2010, balanced superbly between firmness and fruitiness. (RV)" (05/2013) 93 points
James Suckling:
"A wine with an intense sous bois, fresh tobacco and dried flower character on the nose and palate. Full body, with ultra-fine tannins and an attractive finish. It's structured yet polished with a beauty and stature." (02/2013)
1996 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac

Jane Anson:
"Tasted first at the château in July, then again at a Berry Bros supper in late November, and both time it effortlessly showcased why Lafite is one of the most sought-after estates in the world. Takes its time to open, even at 25 years old, but a bit of patience and you are rewarded with rosebud, tuffle, ash, pencil lead and crushed mint, all gently playing around the cassis, bilberry and blackberry fruits. There is huge concentration here, but everything is in balance, and you rejoice in the tertiary notes that give gentleness and juice to the overall feel. Charles Chevallier estate director at the time, Jacques Boissenot consultant. Harvest began September 24, 58hl/h yield. The first Lafite to be put in an anti-fraud engraved bottle." (11/2021) 99 points
Decanter:
"This is compelling, with a bright, forward currant fruit that is opening well now to show the nuance of game, earth, and gunflint to the ripe, dark fruit. The texture is tannic and fresh, with tannins starting to loosen but still in evidence. A luminous, radiant wine that will doubtless improve for another half-century. The vintage saw a solid flowering and fruit set and a warm July, but cool, rainy weather in August slowed ripening. The sun returned for most of September, but there was a bit of rain in the last week, although fine weather returned in October. At Lafite, 38% of the grapes went into the grand vin, a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, and 8% Petit Verdot more of this last and less Merlot than customary. From 1996 forward, the percentage of Cabernet was higher than it had been hitherto. (CC)" (02/2022) 98 points
Wine Advocate:
"The 1996 Lafite-Rothschild was remarkably deep in color considering that it is now 20 years in age. The bouquet is classic Pauillac with pencil shavings and sous-bois infusing the black fruit, masculine and a little aloof, yet focused and very well delineated. The palate is very well balanced with crisp blackberry and boysenberry fruit, spicier than I recollect, a crescendo of flavors so that it seems understated at first but fans out with a sense of confidence towards the finish. I think this still has more to give so cellar it away for another 5-8 years if you can, but otherwise this is an exemplary Lafite-Rothschild that I can envisage getting better and better in bottle, if not quite as enthralling as either Mouton-Rothschild or Château Margaux. (NM)" (10/2016) 97 points
Vinous:
"The 1996 Lafite-Rothschild is the strongest wine from the First Growth in that decade. This bottle, served blind and ex-château in Bordeaux, is so precociously backward that I estimate it to be half its age. Blackberry, cedar and graphite are here as usual, though this bottle has even more intensity than the one served at the estate in 2018. The palate is brilliantly balanced with fine tannins and very intense graphite-infused fruit; there's just a touch more fruité on the finish. Superb. (NM)" (12/2021) 97 points
James Suckling:
"The beauty and balance of this are phenomenal. Seamless tannins and fruit. Full body yet so balanced and refined. Sweet tobacco and berries. Minerals and cedar. A beautiful wine. The depth is superb." (01/2017) Jancis Robinson:
"Looks (and tastes) SO much much younger and more purple than the Lafite 1995. Quite aromatic, very rich and ripe. Seductive. Very smooth. Almost formless for the tannins are well in retreat. Solid stuff that still has a way to go. Slightly inky. Much younger and more angular than the 1995. But it should come out of its shell very elegantly. 18.5/20 (JR)" (02/2011) K&L Notes: 100 points Robert Parker: "Tasted three times since bottling, the 1996 Lafite-Rothschild is unquestionably this renowned estate's greatest wine. As I indicated last year, only 38% of the crop was deemed grand enough to be put into the final blend, which is atypically high in Cabernet Sauvignon (83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot). This massive wine may be the biggest, largest-scaled Lafite I have ever tasted. It will require many years to come around, so I suspect all of us past the age of fifty might want to give serious consideration as to whether we should be laying away multiple cases of this wine. It is also the first Lafite-Rothschild to be put into a new engraved bottle (designed to prevent fraudulent imitations). The wine exhibits a thick-looking, ruby/purple color, and a knock-out nose of lead pencil, minerals, flowers, and black currant scents. Extremely powerful and full-bodied, with remarkable complexity for such a young wine, this huge Lafite is oozing with extract and richness, yet has managed to preserve its quintessentially elegant personality. This wine is even richer than it was prior to bottling. It should unquestionably last for 40-50 years." (4/1999)

Wine Advocate:
"The wine boasts 14.6% natural alcohol and is a final blend of roughly three-fourths Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc, cropped at a ridiculously low 19 hectoliters per hectare. Notes of licorice, garrigue, incense, smoked meats, espresso, creme de cassis and blackberry liqueur jump from the glass of this unbelievably intense wine. Remarkably full, with compelling freshness and precision, this is a fabulous effort in 2010. It will probably close down over the next several years, and not re-emerge for at least a decade, something that often happens with the bigger, richer, more muscular St.-Emilions from the limestone hillsides and plateaux. This is one of the superstars of the vintage and a profound wine. (RP) 98+" (02/2013) 97 points
The Wine Independent:
"Made from 83% Merlot and 17% Cabernet Franc, the 2010 Larcis Ducasse is deep garnet colored. Remarkably, it is still very closed and reduced to begin, offering vague tar and scorched earth notes at the very beginning before opening out to offer glimpses at a powerhouse of plum preserves, blackberry compote, and mince pie notes, followed by wafts of licorice, crushed rocks, and smoked meats. The full-bodied palate is densely laden with youthful black fruit and earthy layers, supported by firm, superbly fine-grained tannins and amazing tension, finishing very long. It needs another 5-7 years, at least, to hit its stride and should keep another 20-years+." (09/2022) 97 points
James Suckling:
"Wow. This is really intense with amazing dark fruit character of crushed blueberries and minerals. Its full-bodied, with super integrated tannins and a superb finish that lasts for minutes. A fabulous wine." (02/2014) 95 points
Vinous:
"The 2010 Larcis Ducasse is a wine that tasted stupendous from barrel, but I subsequently encountered two perplexing showings blind after bottling. Fortunately, this replicates that initial showing. It is beautifully defined on the nose with dark cherries, dark chocolate, raspberry and touches of vanilla. It is vigorous and seems to be opening its first few chapters. The palate is medium-bodied and fresh as a daisy, fine tannins, very cohesive with a lovely sapid finish that lingers in the mouth. Superb grip with a candied element that becomes more evident with aeration. Superb. (NM)" (10/2020) 94 points
Jane Anson:
"Clear sense of completion and balance, good depth and texture to the tannic architecture, with slate, cigar box, crayon, cassis, pomegranate, saffron, and oyster shell. Remains tight at this point, and the acidity is still on the austere side. Give it longer, and concentrate on the excellent 2009 for the next few years. Nicolas Thienpont director, Gratiot-Attmane owners." (09/2024) 94 points
Wine Spectator:
"A rich, tongue-coating style, with loamy structure and dense plum sauce, roasted fig and warm dark currant confiture notes, all inlaid with espresso and graphite. Still tightly drawn now, this needs a bit more cellaring to unfurl fully, but there's beautiful polish and lovely fruit worth waiting for. *Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2013* (JM)" (03/2013) K&L Notes: 97+ Antonio Galloni for Vinous: "One of the highlights in this tasting, the 2010 Larcis Ducasse is simply stunning. Although quite fresh, vibrant and intense, the 2010 is also very closed in on itself. Violet, lavender, graphite and menthol are some of the many notes that give the 2010 its energy and tension. Still very much closed, the 2010 is going to need a good few years to come into its own. Still, it is pretty impressive today. With time in the glass, the 2010 gives a very good idea of what is to come for those who can wait." (03/2017)

Wine Advocate:
"Beautiful, Burgundian-like aromas of burning embers, roasted Provencal herbs, black currants and sweet cherries and raspberries emerge from this medium-bodied, elegant 2009 Pessac-Leognan. Medium to full-bodied and seductive with sweet tannins as well as a surprisingly evolved, precocious personality (even for a 2009), it will offer delicious drinking over the next 15+ years. (RP)" (02/2012) 92 points
Wine Spectator:
"Still youthfully tight, this shows a packed core of plum, cassis and blackberry fruit wrapped with bittersweet cocoa, tobacco and charcoal notes. Nice drive marks the finish, with gorgeous polish, as a mouthwatering linzer torte note expands as it opens in the glass. (JM)" (03/2012) 91 points
Vinous:
"Medium ruby-red. Perfumed aromas of black raspberry, licorice, wild herbs and minerals. Sweet, lush and densely packed, with concentrated black cherry and black raspberry flavors offering considerable early appeal. Finishes with rising fruit and big, ripe tannins. This is superb already but should evolve positively for 10 to 12 years. (ST)" (07/2012)

Wine Advocate:
"One of the strongest efforts I have ever tasted from Alain Vauthier, his small St.-Emilion estate, Moulin Saint-Georges, has turned in a gorgeous 2005 with an opaque purple color and a sweet nose of blueberry and black raspberry fruit along with spring flowers. (RP)" (06/2015) 92 points
Wine Spectator:
"Deep, dark ruby in color. Super concentrated aromas of crushed blackberry, black licorice, espresso and leather follow through to a full body, with ultrafine tannins and loads of coffee and fruit flavors. Very long. (JS)" (03/2008) 91 points
Int'l Wine Cellar:
"Good deep red-ruby. Very ripe aromas of currant, licorice and minerals. Broad, fresh and mouthcoating, with a juicy quality to the dark fruit, minerals and sweet oak flavors. Finishes broad, with lovely floral persistence. Not especially complex yet but offers a light touch and excellent energy for the vintage. (ST)" (05/2008)

James Suckling:
"A typical Palmer showing finesse alongside strength. I love the blackberry, plum, chocolate and cedar character. Its very long and beautiful. The velvety, textured tannins are impressive." (04/2014) 96 points
Wine Spectator:
"Still tight, with a core of black currant, blackberry and plum fruit flavors that is quite youthful, while hints of dried anise, tobacco and singed alder are starting to peek through on the finish. There's a really vibrant iron note cutting through the finish too. (JM)" (06/2016) 95 points
Wine Advocate:
"One of the sexiest wines for drinking now and over the next 10-15 years is undoubtedly the 2000 Palmer. A blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot, the wine has an almost exotic floral nose, soft, undulating tannins, and tremendous opulence and flesh, with a full-bodied mouthfeel, silky tannins, and loads of floral notes intermixed with blue and black fruits as well as hints of smoke and incense in its complex aromatics. This wine is drinking beautifully and should continue to do so for up to two more decades. (RP)" (06/2010) 95 points
Jane Anson:
"Breathe deep to enjoy the curl of violet and woodsmoke aromatics that are coming out of this glass. Softened russet pink around the edges at 21 years old, still deep ruby through the core. The fruits are a little more tertiary than I expected, brambled raspberry, with hawthorn, tobacco, white pepper, truffle and campfire notes, but as it opens up, the palate expands outwards and builds in concentration and grip. No question this once-stubborn vintage is now open for business, and overall this is soft and welcoming but has decades ahead of it." (12/2021) 94 points
Vinous:
"The 2000 Palmer is a very different beast than the 2001, and I use that word intentionally. This is much more feral on the nose, and quite ferrous, presenting leather and dried herbs, smudged red berry fruit, and a hint of fig that emerges with time. The brettanomyces sticks out a bit here. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannins and good density, very earthy in style and certainly more evolved than the succeeding vintage, yet you cannot help falling for its charms. It evolves wonderfully in the glass, actually closing in a little toward the finish, and suggesting that contrary to what the nose suggests, it will repay further cellaring. Excellent. (NM)" (06/2021) 94 points
Wine Enthusiast:
"At this stage, this is very closed, very tight, giving little. But it is possible to discern that this is going to be a beautiful wine. There are flavors of sweet raisins and the fruit has a new world richness, but the structure of dry tannins is always present. It looks as though it has a good, long life. (RV)" (06/2003) Jancis Robinson:
"More noticeable toasty oak than the 2005, perhaps a reflection of the fashion at the time? But the fruit is right there on the palate, still full of freshness and purity. Wonderfully expressive nose the full range of liquorice, pencil lead, toast, cocoa, cassis, leather. Absolutely perfect for drinking now, even though it will age a little further. 18.5/20 points (RH)" (06/2022)

Decanter:
"Attractive nose of elegant black fruit complicated by peppery spices and an alluring trace of smoke. After the subtle balance and delicacy of the 2008, this wine marks a return to the more formidable, classic style of Pichon Baron with its characteristic tension and upright structure and the powerful personality of a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant wine from one of the great terroirs of the Médoc. Precision and linearity on the palate but also a degree of racy restraint that indicates another decade at least will be necessary for the wine to really blossom. Bravo! (YC)" (12/2021) 98 points
Wine Advocate:
"Revealing incredible quality and performing better than it did from barrel, the 2009 appears to be the greatest Pichon Longueville Baron since the 1990 and 1989. An amazing opaque blue/purple color is followed by scents of spring flowers, graphite, smoky charcoal, incense, blackberries, blueberries and hints of coffee and chocolate. Incredibly intense, pure and flawlessly constructed with extravagant layers of fruit and richness, this offering has developed beautifully under the management of Christian Seeley. It is a voluptuous, opulent Pichon Longueville Baron that may eclipse anything they have made in the past. (RP)" (12/2011) 96 points
Wine Enthusiast:
"With a structure that runs between acidity and dark smoky tannins, this is a wine with potential opulence. Very rich in character; dense and dark. The black plum flavors are dominant, along with excellent acidity. For the long-term. *Cellar Selection* (RV)" (04/2012) 96 points
Jane Anson:
"Crayon, cigar and cedarwood aromatics, relatively subdued because this is tightly packed with still-chewy tannins, but there is so much waiting underneath. Give this another few years, or a good few hours in a carafe, to fully appreciate how the dense brambly fruits unroll and expand outwards through the palate. Great quality, with muscular tannins that ensure the ripe fruit remains engaged and at the very beginning of their life. An exceptionally successful wine. 80% new oak. Jean-René Matignon technical director." (08/2021) 95 points
James Suckling:
"Bold, smoky and chocolatey, this is a concentrated and massive wine for the Medoc, the alcohol showing slightly at the bold warm finish. Where is that T-bone steak?" (02/2019) 95 points
Wine Spectator:
"This delivers a massive core of black Mission fig, black currant paste and roasted fig fruit, backed by alder wood, bay leaf, singed cedar and maduro tobacco. The finish lets a racy iron note take over. Long and authoritative, with gorgeous acidity giving the balance for long-term cellaring. (JM)" (03/2012) 95 points
Vinous:
"The 2009 Pichon Baron is similar to the previous bottle. Precocious black fruit mixes with graphite and black truffle. A light marine influence becomes more evident with aeration. It couldn't come from anywhere but Pauillac. The palate is beautifully balanced with a seam of graphite interwoven through the layered black fruit. This is nicely poised for a 2009 Left Bank that seems to be slowly becoming more classically styled in recent months. Wonderful. (NM)" (09/2023) Chris Kissack:
" Elegant and defined fruit on the nose of this wine, polished, very fresh and yet also concentrated, dark in character and yet lifted and even a little floral. The palate is very composed, showing a defined texture, not fat but broad and with good depth as well, filling out in the middle where there is flesh, great gravelly fruit character, and fresh acidity. The tannins are clean and grippy, ripe yet firm too. To be fair this still all seems very primary at the moment, but nevertheless is clearly elegant and brimming with potential. 18.5/20 points" (11/2013) Jancis Robinson:
"Youthful crimson hue. Fresh and floral on the nose. Plenty of intensity and poise. Identical on the palate, the fruit juicy, the tannins strong but integrated. Manages power and charm. Only just opening and still a long way to go. 18/20 points (JL)" (03/2023) K&L Notes: 96 points, Lisa Perotti-Brown - Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Pichon-Longueville Baron has a medium to deep garnet color and a very meaty/savory nose over a core of sweaty leather, baked blackberries and plums with notions of crème de cassis, sautéed herbs and black olives coming through with coaxing. Full, rich, concentrated and decadently fruited in the mouth, the palate has beautifully plush tannins and an herbal lift on the long finish." (03/2019) Ralph Sands

2001 Rieussec, Sauternes (375ml)

James Suckling:
"This is a crazy wine! Its sweet, but not sugary. Mushrooms, furniture wax, spices then dried oranges, lemons, pineapples, and just a hint of vanilla. Full-bodied, with great density and power, yet balanced and refined." (05/2012) 100 points
Wine Spectator:
"Like lemon curd on the nose, turning to honey and caramel. Full-bodied and very sweet, with fantastic concentration of ripe and botrytized fruit, yet balanced and refined. Electric acidity. Lasts for minutes on the palate. This is absolutely mind-blowing. This is the greatest young Sauternes I have ever tasted. *Collectibles, ranked #1 Wine of the Year 2004* (JS)" (09/2004) 99 points
Wine Advocate:
"A monumental effort, the 2001 Rieussec boasts a light to medium gold color in addition to a fabulous perfume of honeysuckle, smoky oak, caramelized tropical fruits, creme brulee, and Grand Marnier. The wine is massive and full-bodied yet neither over the top nor heavy because of good acidity. With intense botrytis as well as a 70-75-second finish, this amazing Sauternes will be its apogee between 2010-2035. (RP)" (06/2004) 99 points
Jeb Dunnuck:
"A magical Sauternes that shows how good the 2001 vintage was for the region, the 2001 Château Rieussec offers a spectacular nose of caramelized quince, honeyed flowers, crème brulée, and exotic spices. Wonderfully pure and precise, with good acidity, it still brings a monster of a mid-palate and has boatloads of fruit and opulence, flawless balance, and a brilliant finish." (08/2021) 97 points
Chris Kissack:
"This presents a wonderfully rich orange-golden hue in the glass, which is matched by a nose of pure baked orange, overlaid with vanilla, crème caramel, crushed chalk and toast, with a preserved lemon freshness with a touch of white pepper. This translated into beautiful freshness and intensity on the palate, the middle sinewy and full of energy, with fabulous tension and linearity, the restrained sweetness intertwined with bitterness and precise acidity. Long and holding on to that sinewy substance in the finish, with nuances of pineapple and white pepper, bitter and very long indeed, it has incredible length. Wonderful balance and intensity here, and while divine now I suspect this will happily see out two or three more decades in the cellar. Drink or hold." (11/2023) 96 points
Jane Anson:
"Opulent. Brilliant amber colour. An elixir of tarte tatin, dried figs, preserved lemon, honey and gingerbread, roast coffee bean and bitter orange. 145.3g/l residual sugar. This reminds us how a great Sauternes, with the right balance and acidity, ages beautifully." (10/2025) 93 points
John Gilman:
"The 2001 Château Rieussec has reached a very good point in its evolution to start drinking the wine. The bouquet is fresh, wide open and quite beautiful in its constellation of toasted coconut, apricot, orange zest, honey, a lovely base of chalky soil tones and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is full, deep and focused, with blossoming complexity, lovely acids and fine length and grip on the suave, refined and zesty finish. Good juice." (01/2018) 93 points
Vinous:
"The 2001 Rieussec is deeper in color than its peers, though this did come from a half-bottle. The bouquet features marmalade, peach and mango scents, though I aver that it does not deliver the mineralité of other, dare I say, more successful vintages. The palate is much better, offering harmonious honeyed fruit, marmalade, orange peel, apricot and light gingerbread notes. It feels long and tender on the finish. (NM)" (06/2021) Jancis Robinson:
"Beautiful, glowing orange-amber colour. Dusty, energetic nose with great combo of freshness and sweetness. A light toastiness and a hint of barley sugar but nothing remotely cloying and great persistence on a whistle-clean finish. 18/20 points (JR)" (10/2022) K&L Notes: 95 points Stephen Tanzer for Vinous: "Pale yellow-gold. Super-ripe nose dominated by honey and marzipan. Hugely ripe and deep, with compelling layers and depth of fruit. Super-concentrated, exotic flavors of apricot, minerals and coconut. Wonderfully chewy, thick and sweet, and extremely long on the aftertaste. A huge wine that will impress early but will really need a minimum of a decade to shed some of its baby fat." (07/2004)
2010 Cardinale Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Vinous:
"Chris Carpenter has done a fabulous job with the 2010 Cardinale. The wine boasts a huge center of fruit backed up by equally firm, imposing tannins. Layers of dark red fruit, mocha, cinnamon and new leather explode from the glass. The 2010 is a huge Cardinale endowed with superb depth, power and richness. At the same time, there is a mid-palate generosity and pliancy that leads me to believe the 2010 will drink beautifully once the tannins soften a touch. Hints of tar, graphite and iron add personality on the full-bodied, intense finish. The 2010 is 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot, predominantly from mountain sites. The ability to blend fruit from various top-notch sites works great here. (AG)" (12/2012) 92 points
Int'l Wine Cellar:
"Refined, restrained, slightly medicinal aromas of cassis, licorice, herbs, lead pencil and coffee. "Mid crimson. Sweet toasty nose with lots of energy. Very s-m-o-o-t-h and ready. Almost eerily well balanced. As though it has been made by committee but to excellent effect. Far from the most characterful wine but it's done well. I could imagine this in a first-class cabin. (JR)" (10/2014)

Its dense purple/black color is followed by copious quantities of crème de cassis and blackberry fruit, silky tannins, a voluptuous texture and stunning purity as well as length. "The 2007 Anthology as usual is a blend of the many vineyards Conn Creek accesses throughout Napa Valley. It's a very good wine, sumptuous in fruit and easily likeable for its soft texture and upfront berry and chocolate flavors. Still, there's something generic about it. Even though it's more expensive, it lacks the focus and interest of the winery's single-vineyard bottlings." (04/2012)

"The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is classic Dunn. Graphite, herbs, incense, tobacco, licorice and coffee infuse the 2010 with notable depth. There is an exotic quality to the 2010 that is hard to fully capture with words, but that lends tons of allure. This Cabernet Sauvignon is just starting to be approachable, although it clearly has the stuffing and pedigree to drink well for many decades to come. (RP)" (10/2014) K&L Notes: 97+ points Stephen Tanzer in Vinous: "Saturated medium ruby. Very pure but tight aromas of blackberry, black cherry, licorice and violet. Sappy, savory and hugely concentrated, displaying remarkable depth of texture to its classically dry, rich flavors of dark fruits, crushed rock, espresso, violet and subtle herbs. Delivers an uncanny combination of fine-grained texture, thickness and inner-mouth energy. Like so many 2010 Napa Cabernets, this wine is as much about soil and savory mineral tones as it is about primary fruit. Wonderfully concentrated, dense, tactile wine, but very unevolved today. The firm, broad tannins are perfectly buffered by material, spreading out to coat the front teeth and upper lips. Not at all a sweet style; in fact, the wine's salinity adds another dimension. With its healthy acidity and great palate-staining length, this splendid Cabernet really calls for another decade in the cellar. It may have an aging curve like a top vintage of Château Latour." Wine Advocate:
"Togni's second label, the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Tanbark Hill Vineyard, is relatively accessible for the vintage. Sweet dark cherries, flowers, herbs and mocha are all woven together in the glass. Already quite juicy and supple, the 2010 is a gracious, mid-weight wine with considerable immediate appeal. Philip Togni, along with his wife Birgitta and daughter Lisa continue to turn out some of the most distinctive and age worthy Cabernet Sauvignons in Napa Valley. The wines are built on structure more than overt fruit, so they need a few years in bottle to come together, but when they do, they are spectacular. (AG)" (12/2012) 90 points
Int'l Wine Cellar:
"Deep ruby-red. Slightly funky aromas of blackberry, roast coffee, leather and smoke, accented by pepper, herbs and violet. The mid-palate shows good texture and a chocolatey sweetness along with an herbal component and some peppery acidity. The persistent finish shows slightly edgy tannins, firm acids and a lightly herbal component. Lisa Togni advises waiting five years to drink the estate's second wine, pointing out that it gets the same vinification as the Togni flagship bottling. A strong vintage for this bottling." (06/2013) Wine Spectator:
"Dried herbs frame the flavor profile, with taut dried currant and dark berry notes. Sleek, balanced and structured, this is a good candidate for short-term cellaring. It is amazing to consider that Togni's wines remain so reasonably priced when an endless number of new wineries with no track record seem to pop up every day with first releases well over $100 a bottle...The estate's Tanbark Hill is a second selection made from the barrels that don't go into the Cabernet Sauvignon. All of the wines see approximately 40% new oak from four different tonneliers." (12/2011) Philip Togni Vineyard is a true family operation. Birgitta Togni manages the viticulture, while husband Philip Togni and daughter Lisa are the oenologist and winemaker respectively. All three share in ownership. Both Philip and Lisa trained in Bordeaux. Philip earned his oenology degree in there and trained at Château Lascombes in Margaux; Lisa trained at Château Léoville Barton in St. Julien.

Wine Advocate:
"The 2007 Affinity exhibits more graphite, but in essence is similarly elegant, with supple tannins (although more velvety than in the 2006), very young, primary black and blue fruit notes, and superb concentration, texture, and length. This is an exceptionally promising wine that is still hiding behind a rather primary display of fruit. Give it 2-3 years of cellaring and drink it over the next 15 or possibly 20 years. This is the best group of wines I have ever tasted from Robert Craig Winery. Not only is there not a single disappointment in this portfolio, but these are all noteworthy wines, with thrilling levels of quality. Moreover, they are moderately priced for Napa Valley as well as ageworthy. I think these are the finest wines that I have ever tasted from Robert Craig Cellars. (RP)" (12/2009) 92 points
Wine Enthusiast:
"This is a wine thats been tremendously variable over the years, but with the 07, Craig has produced his best bottling since the late 1990s. Succeeds not only with dramatically ripe blackberry, currant, chocolate and sweet, smoky cedar flavors, but also with a structure of finely ground tannins and a long, dry, spicy finish." (07/2010) K&L Notes: Praise from Robert Parker: "This is the best group of wines I have ever tasted from Robert Craig Winery. Not only is there not a single disappointment in this portfolio, but these are all noteworthy wines, with thrilling levels of quality. Decanter:
"According to François Perrin this was the perfect year, with rain at the perfect time and an Indian summer in September. This is so graceful, with blackberry aromas and black olive notes. Its fleshy and expressive, with no lack of grip and tension. The fruit profile on the palate mirrors that on the nose. This masterpiece is vivid and harmonious with a chalky acidity and remarkable length. One to forget in the cellar for at least two decades. (CG)" (11/2017) 96 points
Wine Enthusiast:
"The 2010 Beaucastel is a tour de force, brilliantly combining espresso and black olive notes with bright raspberry fruit, while dark earthy notes provide a solid base. The feel on the palate is ample, with tannins that are a bit dusty but not tough or chewy. The long, mouthwatering finish bodes well for the future. *Ranked #43 in Wine Enthusiast Top 100 Cellar Selections of 2015* (JC)" (02/2015) 96 points
Wine Spectator:
"Dark, dense and very closed now, this has a tremendous core of crushed plum, linzer torte and blackberry confiture waiting in reserve. Ample singed cedar and mesquite, warm paving stone and black tea notes lurk in the background and glide through the finish. Features serious grip, but wonderful integration. Should cruise in the cellar. *Collectible, Ranked #8 in Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2013* (JM)" (08/2013) 96 points
James Suckling:
"Stunning nose, in which deep red-fruit character is married to meaty, spicy and caramel aromas. Powerful and very well structured, the tannins still very present, but the overwhelming impression is of elegance. Very long, dry finish with plenty of stony minerality. Gives a very good idea of the direction that the best 2020s will take. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold." (04/2022) 95 points
Wine Advocate:
"This is a gorgeous wine, a classic blend of 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise and the balance the other permitted varietals in the appellation. Deep purple, with loads of bouquet garni, beef blood, blackberry, kirsch, smoke and truffle, this wine is full-bodied, rich and showing even better than it did last year. I still think it needs 3-5 years of cellaring, and it should last for 25-30 years, as most of the top vintages of Beaucastel do. (RP)" (10/2012) 95 points
Vinous:
"Alluring forest floor, ripe strawberry, melted licorice and peppery elements unfurl as the classic 2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape opens in the glass. Full-bodied and concentrated, this serious wine delivers on all fronts, precisely combining substance, freshness and sophistication. The balance here is so impressive. An energetic and persistent close wraps it all up. (NG)" (08/2024) 94 points
Jeb Dunnuck:
"A wine compared to the 2015 by Marc Perrin, the 2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is already drinking nicely, with notable complexity and depth in its garrigue, sweet spice, incense, and both black cherry and currant-like fruit. The 2010s are just now starting to open up and drink well, and this full-bodied effort has impressive purity, notable mid-palate density, and ripe tannin, all suggesting it has a long life ahead of it." (12/2017) Jancis Robinson:
"Very dense and meaty on the nose. Appetising and no shortage of flesh but no heavy sweetness or alcohol. Really quite racy! Complex. Real lift and line through it. May not reach 14%. 18/20 points (JR)" (10/2011) K&L Notes: John Livingstone-Learmonth for Cradle of the Rhône: "shiny, full red – the robe has life in it. The nose is starting to close, has a saline, crushed pistachio shells, hay and dry soil statement, grilling, along with licorice and violet. The fruit within resembles black berries. The bouquet gives the sense of an important wine of proper authority. The palate comes forward on sealed, dark fruits, lissom and live tannins, a joyful abundance that delivers a polished, partly mysterious experience, especially on the later stages, where matters start to integrate. It reaches out very well, traveling both forwards and sideways. Its great ace is its harmony and progression, a perfect Everly Brothers duet. Excellent wine – as it should be in 2010." (10/2013)

"Easily one of the top 2004s I've had, the 2004 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve is stacked with stunning aromatics of kirsch, framboise, licorice, garrigue and big crushed stones and mineral notes. This leads into a blockbuster, full bodied palate that is has sweet, decadent fruit, a texture that expands in the mouth and a gorgeous, long finish. Drinking surprisingly well." (04/2009) 94 points
Int'l Wine Cellar:
"Stunning floral and red berry aromas emphasize raspberry, strawberry and fresh lavender. Bright, focused and pure, with vibrant red fruit and mineral flavors given an exotic twist by a hint of dried apricot. The sweet finish leaves a strong floral pastille impression. The freshness and precision of this wine are really captivating. (JR)" (01/2007) 93 points
Wine Spectator:
"Supple, with very elegant structure guiding the raspberry and cassis fruit, cinnamon, mineral and black tea notes through the lengthy, stylish finish. Very pure, with a great silky mouthfeel, this gains depth as it airs in the glass. (JM)" (10/2007) 92 points
Wine Advocate:
"The deep ruby 2004 Rayas Chateauneuf du Pape is a structured wine that seems to have closed down from the component part tasting last year. It is medium-bodied with sweet, ripe black cherry and raspberry notes, some crushed rocks, and that distinctive minerality that Rayas seems to provide. The wine reveals more structure this year, and therefore seems to need 2-4 years of bottle age and should keep for 15-16. Stylistically, it is more than just a coincidence that it resembles the 1994, which has turned out very well and is beginning to drink beautifully in the classic Rayas style. (RP)" (02/2007)

Wine Advocate:
"Made from older vines and a tank-aged blend of roughly 85% Grenache and the balance Mourvedre and Syrah, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes has additional levels of kirsch, garrigue, ground herbs and black raspberry as well as a full-bodied, decadently textured profile on the palate. Despite the richness level here, it remains gorgeously fresh and even elegant. Enjoy it over the coming 10-12 years. Drink now-2024. Always one of the highlight visits during my time spent working in the Southern Rhone, Clos Saint-Jean, which includes over 100 acres of prime terroir in Chateauneuf du Pape (mostly in the south), is run by brothers Pascal and Vincent Maurel, with consulting help from the incredibly talented Philippe Cambie. Releasing 5 Chateauneufs in top vintages, they also pair up with Manfred Krankl, of Sine Qua Non in Californias Santa Barbara County, and release another high-end cuvee call Chimere. While the winemaking here is often labeled as modern, it is actually relatively traditional, with the Grenache almost always aged in tank and only the Mourvedre and Syrah seeing time in larger, 500-600 liter oak barrels, or demi-muids. In addition, the cuvees may also include small amounts of whole-cluster fermentation. Regardless of how you classify it, the results speak for themselves and there are few wines in the world Id rather drink. (JD)" (10/2013) 93 points
Wine Spectator:
"A dark, loamy style, with warm tar and espresso notes underscoring the core of black Mission fig, Black Forest cake and steeped plum fruit. Juniper and singed alder hints add texture and contrast on the finish. Best from 2015 through 2027." (10/2014) 90-92 points
Int'l Wine Cellar:
"Opaque ruby. High-pitched raspberry, floral pastille and Asian spice aromas are deepened by notes of cola and licorice. Deeper and darker in character on the palate, offering sweet cherry and black raspberry flavors and a suggestion of spicecake. Finishes silky and long, with exotic spice and floral qualities and smooth, well-knit tannins." (02/2014)

"One of my favorite wines in just about every vintage is the old vine cuvée from Janasse and the 2012 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Vieilles Vignes is another beautiful wine. Made from 85% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre and the balance Syrah, aged in a mix of foudre and barrels, it offers terrific black fruits, crushed rocks, garrigue, and violet aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, concentrated, and beautifully balanced, with ripe tannin, its a joy to drink and will keep for another 10-15+ years." (02/2018) 96 points
Wine Advocate:
"Up in the top handful of wines in the vintage (which should come as no surprise to anyone who follows this estate), the 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is a full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, rich and layered Châteauneuf that doesnt put a foot wrong. Made from 85% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre and the rest Syrah, it offers blockbuster notes of blackberry, liquid-violets, spice and serious minerality to go with awesome mid-palate depth and layers of sweet tannin. (JD)" (10/2014) 96 points
Wine Spectator:
"Tightly coiled for now, this features an intense, vivid core of anise, blackberry coulis, plum paste and macerated fig fruit, with black tea, smoldering tobacco and warm ganache notes. Long and dense, but very silky, with gorgeous violet and pastis details lingering in the background. Should unwind with time. Best from 2017 through 2035. (JM)" (10/2014) 94 points
Decanter:
"Christophe Sabon has long produced different bottlings of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, all of high quality. The Vieilles Vignes comes from vines over 100 years old, mostly Grenache. Part of the wine is aged in 600-litre barrels. The nose is remarkably perfumed and lifted, with spicy red-fruits aromas and a light toastiness. The wine is predictably powerful, but it's also tight and elegant, with fine-grained tannins and a delightful freshness on the long finish. Despite the high alcohol, the wine shows fine balance and no burn on the finish. (SB)" (09/2019) 94 points
Vinous:
"Inky ruby. Explosive aromas of dark berry preserves, incense and lavender, with a smoky overtone and bright minerality. Pliant and seamless in the mouth, offering intense, palate-staining cassis and blueberry flavors that are energized by juicy acidity. Shows real power and focus on the strikingly long finish, which features velvety tannins and a hint of candied flowers. There's 15% alcohol here, which is actually quite low for this bottling, and I don't detect any undue heat. (JR)" (02/2015)

Wine Advocate:
"The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Trois Sources comes from the estate's vineyards planted in sandy soils. About 10,000 bottles have been produced. One of the great wines of the vintage, this unbelievable Chateauneuf is still extremely young and primary. Its opaque purple color is followed by scents of ink, acacia flowers, blueberries, black raspberries and blackberries. While full-bodied, extremely concentrated and massive, the wine is totally harmonious with beautifully integrated acidity, tannin and alcohol (which is no doubt in excess of 16%). Give this 2010 five more years of cellaring and drink it over the following 20-25 years. (RP)" (10/2012) 94 points
Wine Spectator:
"A densely packed version, with notes of crushed plum, fig paste and blackberry preserves at the core, set against a backdrop of charcoal, ganache and singed anise. Still tightly wound, with a very grippy finish. The acidity is lively and well-embedded, so this should open nicely in the cellar. (JM)" (07/2014) 94 points

"A new cuvee for this estate and a blend of 60% Grenache and the rest a mix of Syrah, Mourvedre, and Cinsault that comes from tiny yields of 22 hl/hectare, the 2010 Les Trois Sources delivers a decidedly mineral-drenched array of sweet plum, violets, black licorice, wild flowers, and hints of herbs on the nose. Perfumed, complex, and showing the estates hallmark freshness and purity, this full-bodied Châteauneuf-du-Pape is elegant and streamlined on the palate, with beautiful underlying concentration, ripe tannin, and a long finish. "Starting off the reds and easily the best example of this cuvee since the 2001, the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Laurence is incredible stuff. Deep, rich and layered, with copious notions of smoked meats, licorice, ground pepper, spice and saddle leather, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, terrific fruit intensity and a rich, mouth-coating texture. (JD)" (10/2013) 97 points
Int'l Wine Review:
"The 2009 Cuvée Laurence is an absolutely dazzling effort that is just simply delicious. It delivers seductive aromas of black cherry, raspberry, roasted plum, smoked meat, espresso, smoldering ash, melted licorice, mint and fresh mineral, which all come together and burst from the glass. This continues to impress on the rich, layered palate, where it demonstrates wonderful balance and precision, while adding in a beautiful touch of acidity that provides a sense of freshness as it heads into the finish. While this looks to be very approachable early on, it is also an age worthy wine that will continue to deliver for years to come. (JD)" (09/2014) 94 points
Wine Spectator:
"Dark and ripe, with blackberry, plum and fig fruit layered with notes of ganache, charcoal and dark olive. This cuts a broad, smoky path through the finish, offering some slightly chewy grip and ample flesh. A lovely lingering bay leaf hint adds extra nuance. Impressive, though a touch drier in feel than the Cuvée Réservée in this vintage. (JM)" (06/2014) 94 points
Int'l Wine Cellar:
"Bright violet color; looks a lot younger than it is. High-pitched red fruit and floral pastille scents are deepened by notes of olive, licorice and smoked meat. Sweet, expansive and seamless, offering intense raspberry and cherry compote flavors accented by white pepper and succulent herbs. Velvety tannins build on a finish of appealing sweetness, with a touch of bitter chocolate." (01/2014) 94 points
Vinous:
"Brilliant ruby. A wild, highly perfumed bouquet evokes candied dark berries, smoky minerals and licorice, with a sexy floral note emerging with air. Sappy, penetrating and sweet on the palate, offering intense black raspberry and lavender pastille flavors that put on weight with air. Shows surprising vivacity for a hot-year wine and finishes spicy, focused and very long, leaving a note of spicecake behind. (JR)" (04/2015) 92 points
Wine & Spirits:
"Laurence Féraud takes this from some of her oldest vines, crushes the whole bunches lightly into cement vats and leaves it to ferment spontaneously, before moving it into old oak foudres to age 36 to 48 months. The result in 2009 is earthy and dense, a staunchly traditional take on Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Spiced cherry notes emerge with air, as does an appealingly savory, miso-like complexity that lasts. The tannins hold it firm, lending the wine the chewiness of a shiitake. You could drink this now, with miso-marinated pork chops, but the structure suggests it will last well for the next decade or more." (02/2015)

"Made from a blend of 80% old Vine Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre, with the Mourvèdre brought up in small barrels and the Grenache mostly in foudre, the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee du Quet is a huge, monster of a wine thats about as straight up hedonistic as it gets! Blackcurrants, uber-ripe black cherries, melted licorice, Pekin duck and loads of Asian spice characteristics emerge from the glass and this killer wine hits the palate with serious depth and richness. While its more evolved than the 2010, it unquestionably one of the most concentrated wines of the vintage, yet it stays light and graceful on the palate. This is a tour de force in Chateauneuf du Pape and an incredible wine to drink over the coming decade (or more)." (07/2017) 96 points
Wine Advocate:
"The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee du Quet (80% tank-aged Grenache and 20% small barrel-aged Mourvedre from 60-year-old vines) is spectacular. Its dense purple color is accompanied by an exquisite bouquet of boysenberries, mulberries, blueberries and other wild mountain blue and black fruits. Possessing great intensity, a full-bodied mouthfeel and superb purity, it is a singular expression of old vine Grenache blended with Mourvedre. The finish lasts for 50+ seconds, and the wine has a skyscraper-like texture as well as a multidimensional set of aromatics and flavors. This brilliant offering is more evolved and forward than either the 2007 or 2010. (RP)" (11/2011) 94 points
Wine Spectator:
"This is all lean muscle, with singed mesquite and tobacco notes pushed by dark currant, braised fig, plum reduction and tar flavors that cut a broad swath. Densely wound through the grippy finish, with a mouthfilling bittersweet cocoa edge that stays polished and fresh. One of the bigger wines in the vintage." (11/2011) K&L Notes: More context on "Cuvee de Quet" from Robert Parker: "This 22-acre estate is on top of its game thanks to the efforts of the brilliant brother and sister team of Daniel and Christine Chaussy, who have been hitting all the high notes for the last 15 or more years. There are three cuvees of red Chateauneuf du Pape, and I would suggest that 2009 and 2010 are the finest back-to-back vintages produced to date (although one can not forget the prodigious 2007s turned out by the Chaussys)." "More concentrated, dense, and serious, the 2007 Xavier Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Anonyme is thrilling on all accounts. A late release and aged almost 48 months in a combination of demi-muid and barrique, it offers up a spectacular array of black currants, smoked duck, licorice, garrigue, pepper, and lavender. This flows to a full-bodied, voluptuous, and multi-dimension 2007 that has fabulous concentration, no hard edges, and ripe, polished tannin that emerge on the finish. It needs another 2-3 years of bottle age, and will have upwards of two decades of total longevity. Knockout stuff!" (12/2012) K&L Notes: Conceived by Xavier Vignon, Cuvée Anonyme was created as an exploration of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s collective terroir rather than a single estate expression. The 2007 bottling draws from multiple parcels across the appellation, spanning varied exposures and soil types, from galets roulés to sand and limestone. This diversity of sites captures the region’s natural breadth, balancing warmth and power with structure and freshness shaped by mistral winds and old-vine plantings. The wine reflects Vignon’s long-standing philosophy that Châteauneuf’s identity is best understood through the integration of its many terroirs rather than the dominance of any single one.

"The powerful, rich 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Anonyme reveals an off-the-chart level of extract, lots of glycerin (nearly 16% natural alcohol) and copious black cherry, blueberry, forest floor, lavender and graphite characteristics. Xavier Vignon, along with Philippe Cambie, are probably the two most highly renowned oenologists in Chateauneuf du Pape as well as some of the surrounding Cotes du Rhone regions. Vignons office and laboratory are next to the Auto Route A7, in the same complex as Chateau Husson. He is the consultant for such well-known domaines as Raymond Usseglio, Jerome Quiot, Beaurenard, La Nerthe, Mont Redon, Marcoux, Grand Veneur and La Gardine. I tasted through the new and upcoming Xavier Vignon releases. The blend of Xavier Vignons Chateauneuf du Pape can vary considerably. Vignon told me that it is a selection from nearly 120 different parcels in the appellation. Fashioned from the best fruit from old vines planted in the finest parcels is the Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Anonyme. Xavier Vignon is not going to release the 2007 Anonyme (his greatest Chateauneuf du Pape to date) until 2013 so readers have a chance of getting some of this production. I tasted three vintages of this cuvee with Vignon. (RP) 95+" (10/2012) John Majeski

This has been, to borrow a 1982 film starring Mel Gibson, the year of living dangerously. Also the year of less than perfect sleep I recently had a crazy dream about the 2020 vintage where the harvested bunches of grapes were all wearing tiny face masks! Wake me up! Might be a good time to revisit another vintage, one that invariably delivered wonderful, deeply-structured wines from Bordeaux to Brunello di Montalcino to the sunlit vineyards of the Southern Rhone. The sumptuous 2010 Anonyme, blended from a stunning array of old vine parcels, has had a full decade to evolve into a wine of serious beauty, with a rich elaboration of black fruits framed by supple spice, garrigue, graphite and tar. The luxurious tannins have hit their sweet spot as well, contributing to a long and flavorful finish. This will complement a wealth of savory dishes, from roasted game to eggplant moussaka.

"The top wine from the portfolio, the 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee Anonyme offers thrilling purity and focus in its lively dark fruits, roasted meats and underbrush-scented bouquet. Full-bodied, ripe and textured, with fantastic polish and sweetness to its tannin, it has a supple, forward feel, yet will easily evolve for 10-15 years. This is another impressive lineup from oenolgist Xavier Vignon, who works with the likes of Raymond Usseglio, Le Nerthe, Marcoux and Grand Veneur, to name a few. These are all negociant wines, but they obviously have access to some serious vineyards, and the winemaking is impeccable. Looking at these latest releases, his 2013s buck the vintage stereotype with their ripe, textured profiles, and his 2012s are certainly up with some of the top wines of the vintage as well. In addition, prices remain more than reasonable here. If you havent yet discovered these wines, now is a great time. As a side note, Im halfway through a case of his 2007 Châteauneuf du Pape, with every wine showing brilliantly. These can drink nicely in their youth, yet age beautifully as well. (JD)" (10/2014) K&L Notes: Xavier Vignon. One of the finest winemakers you’ve never heard of. Xavier keeps a low profile, though he’s the mind behind a number of seriously high profile estates in Chateaneuf du Pape. Raymond Usseglio, La Gardine, Jerome Quiot, Beaurenard, La Nerthe, Mont Redon, Marcoux and Grand Veneur. That’s a few big-time names, right?
So when it came time for Xavier and his partners to make their own signature Chateauneuf, you’d probably have a pretty good idea that the wine would be damn fine. Oh, yeah, it’s damn fine and then some. Cuvée Anonyme - named as such because if he told you where he got the fruit for this wine from, he’d have to kill you...
And the guy likes to have some fun. Hey, wine is fun, right? His blends are thoughtful, innovative and the shot in the arm that the southern Rhone needs right now. Young talented vintner, fabulous vines served up on a silver platter, monster adoration from the press, we see a lot of parallels here with the Westside Paso posse (Saxum, Linne Calodo, etc.). The only exceptions being the vines are older, and the wines aren’t as pricey. Hmm - this is making a heckuva lot of sense right about now. Keith Mabry

What a difference a few years makes. I tasted this wine about two years ago and it is was still a little tight but oh, is it coming along nicely now. The penetrating fruit has softened somewhat and more of the nuance and spices are beginning to shine through. As the overall profile comes into focus, this wine should hit its full stride in a couple more years but what a pleasure to drink now. Perfect for that mixed grill or perhaps some slow cooked brisket.

(RP) 95+" (10/2012)

Decanter:
"Fascinating insight into ageability of PS (Pagos Seleccionadas) in a very good year. Gloriously aromatic, floral, and black fruits. Bright, fresh, complex, with a clean, mineral edge. Still so young, a sign of the potential of Ribera del Duero. (SE)" (02/2015) 95 points
Wine Spectator:
"Expressive and intense, this impressive red marries elegance and power, delivering rich flavors of blackberry, pomegranate, dark chocolate, mineral and spice over ripe, firm tannins. The texture is as smooth as velvet, the finish long and sweet. (TM)" (11/2007) 94 points
Vinous:
"Dark ruby. Strongly perfumed scents of exotic cherry-cola, blackberry, vanilla and Asian spices. Weighty but focused dark fruit flavors offer striking clarity and palate-staining concentration, with soft tannins building on the close. The cola quality lingers on the long, sweet finish. This wonderfully balances richness and vivacity. (JR)" (09/2007) Jancis Robinson:
"Cask sample. For this vintage they started to use less new oak. Sweeter, more jagged, more exaggerated than the regular 2004 bottling which I prefer at this stage, although the PS wine may settle down and eventually have a longer life (hence the + sign). Almost perfumey. Rich. This may well develop into something even more exciting than the 2001 PS. 17.5+/20 points (JR)" (08/2007)

"A legendary wine in the making, the 2009 Clos Mogador Priorat is a blend 40% Garnacha (from 80 year old vines), 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Syrah and 5% Pinot Noir, Mourvedre and Merlot, thats aged in new, 500-liter oak casks for a year before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Gorgeously perfumed, with a liquid-mineral, creamy raspberry, currant, earth, and licorice-driven bouquet, this full-bodied effort hits the palate with a dense, structured feel, layers of fruit, and defining acidity that emerges on the finish. 96+" (12/2012) 93 points
Vinous:
"Inky ruby. An explosive perfume of candied dark berries, potpourri, woodsmoke and cola, with a strong mineral overtone. Sappy and penetrating, offering sweet cherry compote and cassis flavors and bracing minerality. Puts on weight with air and finishes with firm tannic grip and lingering floral and spice elements. By all means give this wine at least five more years of age. (JR)" (09/2012) 92 points
Wine Advocate:
"The 2009 Clos Mogador has a more opulent, luscious bouquet than the 2008, with lifted, high-toned floral fruit (iodine, star anise and sloe) and a smudge of warm alcohol. The palate is full-bodied with succulent, gamey dark fruits and an underlying earthiness that should develop with bottle age. It exudes fine tension and poise and is very expressive on the structured finish, which will mellow nicely. (NM)" (04/2012)

Wine Advocate:
"Dark ruby-colored with a garnet rim, it displays a lovely nose of Asian spices, incense, tobacco, balsamic, and blackberry. On the palate it has exceptional depth, layers of spicy black fruit, excellent ripeness, and an elegant personality. Decanter:
"Alluringly complex aromatics, balsamic with sweet spices, red fruits, dark chocolate. The palate is startlingly fresh, balanced between cherry red fruits, liquorice and cinnamon, with notes of dried herbs. 2001 was an exceptional vintage and this is proof: well structured, with distinct tannin and with many years ahead of it. (SJE)" (02/2020) 94 points
John Gilman:
"The 2001 Rioja Gran Reserva 904 from La Rioja Alta is a very classic wine in terms of its octane, tipping the scales at an old school and very cool 12.5 percent. The wine is outstanding, wafting from the glass in a complex and classy mélange of red and black cherries, a touch of raspberry, cloves, spicy Rioja soil tones, mustard seed, incipient nutskin, a touch of toasted coconut from American oak, as well as bit of cedar from its French wood section of the orchestra. On the palate the wine is just beautiful, offering up stunning intensity of flavor without undue weight in its medium-full, but rock solid format. The wine has a lovely core of fruit, superb soil signature, a touch of tannin, tangy acids and great focus and balance on the very long and complex finish. This is a beautiful wine that will age for decades and decades. (JG) 94+" (05/2014) Jancis Robinson:

"I had the chance to taste a bottle of the 2001 Viña Tondonia Reserva 10 years after it was released, and the wine has evolved beautifully and quite slowlyat least that is the case for these bottles that have been kept in the winery for all these years. It's austere and elegant, with balance and concentration, polished tannins and a chalky texture, long tasty and dry. This is lively and should continue developing in bottle for quite some time... John Gilman:
"The 2001 Viña Tondonia Rioja Reserva from López de Heredia is a truly beautiful wine in the making. At age eighteen, it is drinking with a great degree of style and polish, but is still in climbing mode and will be even better down the road than it is today! The gorgeous bouquet wafts from the glass in a mix of cherries, raspberries, toasted coconut, cloves, salty soil elements, cigar wrapper, cinnamon and orange zest in the upper register. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, refined and nicely tangy, with a lovely core of fruit, great soil signature, moderate, buried tannins and stunning length and grip on the vibrant and very complex finish. This is not a powerful wine by any stretch of the imagination, but rather a vibrant, intensely flavored and beautifully transparent wine of breed and stellar complexity. 2001 is a great vintage in Rioja and the Viña Tondonia Reserva has fully captured all of the potential of this magical year. It is delicious now and is only going to get better for the next couple of decades." (09/2019) 93 points
Wine & Spirits:
"Elegance and understatement are the classic hallmarks of fine Rioja, sustained in this estate-grown red from an exceptional vintage. The wines complexity begins in the light cranberry essence of its aroma, which deepens to cherries and adds zesty notes of orange peel as the flavors build in richness. Sleek and mature, this is the ultimate red for rack of lamb." (12/2012) 92 points
Vinous:
"(75% tempranillo, 15% garnacha and 5% each of graciano and mazuelo) Bright medium red. Expansive bouquet of musky red and dark berries, medicinal cherry, rose oil and Asian spices. Oh, my. It's another wonderful release from Lopez de Heredia. It doesn't help that I already collect the red, white and Rose Tondonia wines. Still, I try to keep my feelings at bay when trying these wines. This superb 2001 Reserva has bright pomegranate scents with orange peel and cherry on the nose, as well as cigar box scents. The GOOD cigars, not the kind my Uncle used to smoke that effectively cleared everyone out of the house. On the palate, very bright red fruits, dry tannins and cedar. A fuller bodied mouthfeel than usual for this wine. All of this comes with a citrus finish. This puppy will even hold up to a nicely seared steak. Will age for many years to come. Unfortunately, we also have magnums of this and I am supposed to be limiting my collection. So much for that plan.

"What a powerful nose. Fresh herbs, currants, cassis, minerals, orange peel, pepper, and a rosemary character. A full bodied wine with minerals, dried herbs, currants, and hints of lightly toasted oak. This is very precise, powerful, and gorgeous. Immense complexity with a very, very long finish. Fabulous and balanced right now but could still use more bottle age. This may turn out to be the best release yet." (04/2011) 97 points
Wine Enthusiast:
"Guado al Tasso is a wine that will make you fall uncontrollably in love with Italy. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are expertly blended to produce amazing intensity, purity and texture. Youll appreciate aromas of mineral, ripe fruit, leather, tobacco and chocolate. *Best of 2011, Cellar Selection*" (12/2010) 95 points
Vinous:
"Dark ruby. Complex nose offers lively aromas of cassis, dry herbs and tobacco, nicely complicated by vanilla and sexy oak. Lush and sweet on entry, but with extremely good definition and lift to the flavors of spicy blackberry, coffee, black pepper and mocha. The juicy, complex, extremely long finish features smooth, sweet tannins that expand with air. An extremely impressive wine that may not be as long-lived as some previous vintages, but is, for my money, the best Guado al Tasso ever. Very well done. (ID)" (09/2010) 94 points
Wine Advocate:
"The 2007 Guado al Tasso screams of Bolgheri. Sweet grilled herbs, mocha, spices and black cherry jam are woven into a generous, expansive frame. There is a wonderful sense of richness and warmth to the fruit that carries through to the round harmonious finish, where clean, minerally notes add freshness. This is simply gorgeous today, but it is young, and the oak needs to integrate. Still, it is impossible not to admire the 2007 Guado al Tasso. In 2007 Guado al Tasso is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The late ripening Cabernet Franc, used in place of Syrah for the first time in 2007, adds a measure of freshness that had often been missing in previous vintages. (AG)" (10/2010) 94 points
Decanter:
"This is intense and smoky, with liquorice and bitter dark chocolate notes layered on top of smoked almonds. The tannins really push their way through to the front of the mouth. This feels like it needs a good long time to further soften and it is the result of an excellent growing season. A warm spring was followed by some August rains and then a fine, dry harvest period with day-night temperature swings that ensured great concentration in the grapes. The team has used 3% Petit Verdot, which completes the blend. All vineyard plots were vinified separately, with malolactic fermentation taking place in new oak barrels. Blending was done after the component wines were aged in barrel, followed by 10 months of ageing in the bottle before release. (JA)" (11/2019) 92 points
Wine Spectator:
"A little herbal, but with attractive currant and berry character. Full and chewy, with ripe tannins and a long finish." (10/2010) Jancis Robinson:
"Notably dark ruby. Really nice evolution on the nose, with some freshness. Then, yet again, sweetness on palate entry but the tannins seem to have resolved themselves. I could relish this with a bowl of spaghetti amatriciana or other powerful, hearty dish. 17/20 points (JR)" (10/2022) K&L Notes: Antonio Galloni on the vintage: "I continue to be amazed at the high average quality Antinori achieves across a production that exceeds a whopping 20 million bottles per year. This is a fabulous set of new releases. Long-time Oenologist Renzo Cotarella could certainly have rested on his laurels; after all he is already one of Italy’s most celebrated winemakers. Instead, Cotarella continues to improve quality in a meaningful way. The highlights are the 2007s, which are off the charts. The 2007 harvest brings with it a number of additional changes. Syrah has been eliminated from Guado al Tasso in favor of Cabernet Franc, a grape that is proving to be exceptionally well-suited to the Tuscan coast. If the 2007 is any indication, Guado al Tasso is taking on a much more Bordeaux-like personality." (10/2010)

"The 2009 Bolgheri Superiore Guado al Tasso impresses for its richness and sheer power. Mocha, sweet spices, plums, blackberries and herbs wrap around the palate as this intense wine shows off its pedigree. Layers of flavor build to the deep, intensely satisfying finish. The 2009 is complete and harmonious from the very first taste. In 2009 the blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029. Lush, dense and seamless, with impressive volume nicely leavened by adequate acidity, which gives this big boy an element of finesse. Wine & Spirits:
"Selected from Antinoris 750-acre vineyard in Bolgheri, this is a blend of cabernet sauvignon (60 percent) with merlot, cabernet franc and petit verdot. The complete ripeness of the cabernet makes this comfortable and comforting, Tuscan-modern in its clean lines. Spicy tannins edge the fruit in sweet warmth, while the wine feels balanced, sleek and easy to cuddle up to, especially with prime rib." (04/2014) Jancis Robinson:
"Dark crimson though slightly paler than the 2007. Still very youthful. Bloody and rich and ripe. Big and bold. The Cabernet Sauvignon was picked in late September when it was much lighter than in 2007. It does remind me a lot of an excellent 2009 red bordeaux. A bit hot on the end. Still unevolved. But sleek and impressively velvety. Masses of (ripe) tannin. 18/20 points (JR)" (06/2015)

"A star on the vast stage that is the Antinori wine empire, the 2010 Bolgheri Superiore Guado al Tasso is a seamless and stunning wine. Its one of those rare wines that inspires praise and excited conversation from the very second you raise the glass to your nose. The blend is Cabernet Sauvignon (55%) with Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Baritone aromas of black cherry, black currant, cured meat, sweet spice, Spanish cedar, mocha and wild Mediterranean herbs come together in graceful unity. In the mouth, the wine is exceedingly smooth and decadent with a long velvety trail that softly coats the palate. This is one for the cellar. Renzo Cotarella and the Antinori family have certainly hit their stride here at Guado al Tasso. "Rich yet tightly wound, delivering cherry, black currant, floral, spice and mineral flavors. The structure keeps this compact and monolithic for now, with a resonant finish that should develop beautifully. (BS)" (06/2014) 93 points
Vinous:
"The 2010 Guado al Tasso comes across as incredibly stern and tannic, with little of the aromatic expressiveness and sheer juiciness of the best years. The warm, resonant Cabernet Franc bouquet and dark fruit are less evident than they are normally. In 2010 the rains were particularly challenging, which means the percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc way down, while Merlot is up. It will be interesting to see where the 2010 goes over the coming years. Today, the firm sense of structure is much more typical of Antinori's wines from Chianti Classico. Still, there is plenty of intrigue in the 2010. (AG) 93+" (08/2013)

Decanter:
"The 2010 Solaia is less immediately giving on the nose than the Tignanello of the same vintage, taking time to reveal nuances of grilled herbs, black raspberry and currants beneath the cedar and spice. As it opens, it builds in intensity reaching a crescendo on the long powerful finish. There is plenty of dense fruit to back up mouth filling tannins, which are remarkably sophisticated and a testament to the ongoing fine tuning at this Antinori property. (MM)" (02/2018) 98 points
James Suckling:
"A triumph for Solaia. It suggests the greatness of the legendary 1997 Solaia. This is a wine with very subtle and complex aromas and flavors with currants, licorice and raspberries. Wonderful nose. Full body, with ultra-fine tannins and a long, long finish. It lasts for minutes on the palate. Love this wine. The precision of the Cabernet Sauvignon comes through here." (11/2013) 98 points
Vinous:
"The 2010 Solaia rounds out this flight in style. Swaths of tannin give the 2010 a real sense of explosive energy and vibrancy that only builds with time in the glass. A whole range of dark aromas and flavors give the 2010 its brooding, inward personality. Tasted from magnum, the 2010 is very young, but its pedigree is unmistakable. (AG)" (09/2020) 97 points

"Already one of Italys most iconic bottlings, this gorgeous 2010 is already a classic. Its complex and intense bouquet unfolds with ripe blackberries, violets, leather, thyme and balsamic herbs. This wine will age and develop for decades. *Cellar Selection* (KO)" (05/2014) 97 points
Wine Advocate:
"The 2010 Solaia puts on an incredible show that hits all the senses and keeps your unyielding attention for as long as there is wine in the bottle. There are various ways to describe the bouquet. First, is the wine's sweet side, as this beautiful 75-20-5 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc delivers ripe cherry, black currant, baking spice and dark chocolate. After that, the wine becomes redolent of tobacco, balsam, bay leaf, rum cake and dark licorice. The bouquet is all encompassing and complete. A firmly structured backbone is padded generously by the fleshy richness of its consistency. This is a gorgeous wine that will age for decades. (ML)" (08/2013) 93 points
Int'l Wine Cellar:
"Good dark ruby. Black cherry, blackcurrant, chocolate, fresh herbs and smoky oak on the nose and palate. (06/2023) K&L Notes: 98 points Antonio Galloni for Wine Advocate: "In this context, it is obvious why the 2010 is the greatest Solaia ever made. The 2010 has it all; expressive aromatics, wonderfully nuanced fruit and tons of supporting structure. The 2010 has been magnificent since I started tasting the component wines in 2011. Not that it is in bottle, it is every bit as stunning as I had hoped. Readers will not want to miss this towering masterpiece from the Antinori family. Ideally, the 2010 should be cellared until at least age ten. This mesmerizing, wonderfully complete Solaia represents the height of finesse Antinori started to achieve with the 2004. In time, the 2010 will be recognized as one of the all-time legendary Solaias. Actually, it already is. I can't think of a better wine with which to wrap up this monumental, truly once-in-a-lifetime tasting."

"The 2008 Tignanello is unquestionably one of the wines of the vintage. The 2008 isnt a huge or obvious Tignanello, rather it is a wine that impresses for its sublime elegance and precision. Understated layers of fruit caress the palate like cashmere in this impeccable, soft wine. There is not a hard edge to be found. Black cherries, tobacco, smoke and licorice are some of the notes that come through on the finish. The flavor profile is decidedly on the dark side, but the wines structure is medium in body and intensity. In 2008 the Tignanello has more energy, focus and length than the Solaia. It is a fabulous achievement! The 2008 Tignanello is 80% Sangiovese aged in 300-liter French oak barrels (1/3rd new), 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, both aged in 100% new 225-liter French oak barriques. "Tignanello has this amazing ability of always being, well, Tignanello. Its very DNA makes it among the most distinctive and recognizable wines in the world. I'm happy to report that this is also the case for the 2014 Tignanello that faced very different growing conditions compared to most. The wine is beautiful and balanced with sweet tannins and a supporting oak texture that is neatly folded at the back. The wine is all about measure and proportion, and it aspires to these goals with an impressive sense of natural harmony. This is not an overtly powerful or muscular expression. Instead, it shows a tasty, almost savory form of elegance. This vintage was made with 75% Sangiovese, which means that the Cabernet presence is a tad bigger than normal. Ultimately, this wine is more finessed and delicate, and I appreciate the careful tannic management on display here. (ML)" (04/2017) 93 points

James Suckling:
"Wonderful aromas of pine needles, rosemary, fresh mushrooms, bark and dark fruit. Full body. Very tight and tannic backbone. Racy and driven. Undertones of orange peel and wet earth. Even licorice and mint. Great finish. Better after 2021, but exciting to taste now." (06/2019) 97 points
Wine Advocate:
"To hit the market in June, the 2016 Tignanello is a rock-solid wine and a stunning beauty. The wine offers an impeccable level of precision and laser-focus delivery of fruits, spices, tilled earth, espresso beans and Mediterranean herbs. This vintage follows the classic blending formula of 80% Sangiovese with about 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Cabernet Franc. The vines are now 15 to 20 years old. Compared to the 2015 vintage that ultimately appeared more chewy and succulent, this expression from the iconic 2016 vintage is more vibrant, nervous and jazzed. It shows more savory spice, saltiness and minerality, with a beautifully integrated quality of tannins. Some 320,000 bottles were produced. This wine is at the top of the list of some of the best Tignanello ever made, including the vintages 2007, 2009, 2010, 2013 and 2015. (ML)" (05/2019) 96 points
Wine & Spirits:
"The 2016 growing season saw warm temperatures without any big heat spikes, allowing even ripening and yielding a vibrant, harmonious Tignanello with plenty of aging potential. Brisk acidity draws out the wines deeply concentrated flavors of blackberry, cherry and plum into an energetic evolution across the palate. Notes of tobacco, subtle spices and dark chocolate emerge to add dimension to the fruit tones, the flavors woven together in a seamless, silky texture." (08/2019) Jancis Robinson:
"80% Sangiovese, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc. Those Bordeaux varieties play a significant role on the nose, lending strong blackcurrant fruit on the palate, combining beautifully with the black cherry and violet of the Sangiovese. There's plenty of acidity on the palate, succulent oak and youthful black fruit with superb persistence. Just a hint of leather and liquorice on the finish (which increases as the wine develops in the glass), and perhaps a medicinal sort of character too. Very finely tannic. Perfectly chiselled, with impeccable fruit to enjoy now, but a great deal of complexity waiting for the future. 18+/20 points (RH)" (08/2020)

"Aromas of blackcurrants and blueberries with hints of lavender and violets. Full body, chewy and polished tannins and a long, flavorful finish. A beautifully linear and polished red. Give it time to show it all but this is already a beauty. The depth and class to this are indeed impressive. Better in 2017." (08/2015) 95 points
Vinous:
"The 2012 Tignanello is deep, rich and voluptuous, yet also retains a distinct element of classicism in its focused, mid-weight structure. Dark red cherry, pomegranate, kirsch, spice, tobacco and menthol open up in the glass, but only reluctantly. Firm veins of tannin and pulsating acidity give the wine its sense of energy and verticality. The mid-weight structure should allow the wine to open up in another few years. The 2012 isn't as powerful as the 2010 or exotic as the 2011, but rather is most similar to how the 2005 was in its youth. The 2012 is a Tignanello built on pure finesse and grace. I would not open a bottle before its tenth birthday, if at all possible. (AG)" (09/2015) 95 points
Wine Enthusiast:
" *Cellar Selection* Heres a structured red with lots of finesse. It opens with alluring aromas of fragrant blue flowers, red berries, baking spices and exotic herbs while the firm, vibrant palate delivers black cherry, crushed raspberry, clove, orange zest, licorice and a sprinkling of white pepper. Its still young but well balanced, with tightly woven but polished tannins and fresh acidity." (08/2015) 93 points
Wine Advocate:
"The 2012 Tignanello is a very handsome wine with dark fruit nuances that extend far beyond the normal spectrum for Sangiovese (and the smaller percentages of French grapes that complete this wine). This vintage, that started off with a very hot summer and ended with a cool harvest season, show a little more spice and Mediterranean herb on the finish. Grapes were harvested at the end of September and delivered slightly less alcohol than previous vintages. There is a point of freshness but the tannins are mature and yielding. In fact, the tannic management is spot-on and is complimented by the velvety and rich nature of the mouthfeel. Pretty mineral accents add a lasting touch of complexity. The 2012 Tignanello has the qualities for a successful evolution. (ML)" (10/2015) 91 points

Wine Advocate:
"The 2013 Tignanello represents the beginning of a new chapter for Italy's ultimate game-changer wine. The blend remains 80% Sangiovese with 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc but Renzo Cotarella tells me "stylistically-speaking, this is what we wanted to achieve." The winemaking formula remains the same, but one of the major differences and benefits to this wine is vineyard age. The celebrated Tignanello single vineyard is now reaching 15 years old. In other words, it is in its production prime. This is a harmonious and beautifully integrated wine that reveals black fruit and baking spice. I'm told the 2014 Tignanello will have a greater percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2015 vintage will have more Sangiovese. (ML)" (12/2016) 95 points
Vinous:
"The 2013 Tignanello is a real knock-out. Rich and intense, but also linear in style, the 2013 is endowed with superb energy from start to finish. In this vintage, the Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc character is especially evident, especially in the aromatics. Today, the 2013 is tightly wound and not ready to show all of its cards. Readers will have to be patient with the 2013, but the wine has plenty to say. Above all else, this is a remarkable level of quality for a wine with Bordeaux First Growth production (but not price) often in excess of 25,000 cases.(AG) 95+" (10/2016) 95 points
Decanter:
"Winemaker Renzo Cotarella declared the 2013 to be one of the most vibrant Tignanellos Antinori has ever made. It recalls 2010 but is a slightly less powerful package. The Cabernet Sauvignon is particularly evident at the moment, with well-defined nuances of blackberry bush. Notes of fresh dark earth, red cherry and minerality lurk underneath. The tannins are long and refined but not quite ready to relax their grip. Currently austere rather than generous, this needs time to knit together. (MM)" (03/2018) 94 points
Wine Enthusiast:
"Vibrant and loaded with finesse, this blend of 80% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc opens with enticing scents of red woodland berry, new leather, Asian spice and a touch of menthol. The youthful palate delivers red currant, wild cherry, star anise and clove alongside a backbone of firm acidity and polished, tightly wound tannins. It will age majestically. *Top Cellar Selections of 2017* (KO)" (03/2017) 94 points
Wine Spectator:
"Aromas of graphite, smoke and tobacco introduce the cherry flavor in this expressive, focused red. Firm tannins and lively acidity balance the fruit and purity, while herbal, spice and mineral elements all gather steam as this plays out on the long finish. *Ranked #8, Top 100 Wines of 2016* (BS)" (09/2016) 92 points
Wine & Spirits:
"Flavors of black currant and tobacco bring the influence of Cabernet Sauvignon (15%) and Cabernet Franc (5%) to the fore in this Sangiovese-based blend. Ample alcohol lends a Bourbon-like edge to the wines oak-derived accents of vanilla and coconut, but Sangioveses firm, raspy tannins guide the wine back toward red cherry flavors and into a long, smoky finish." "The highlight in this range, the exquisite 2014 Tignanello is all about persistence and understated class. The aromatics alone are captivating. Sculpted, finely delineated flavors add to the wine's vivid personality. Because of the challenges posed by the growing season, the blend leans more heavily toward Cabernet Sauvignon than is typically the case. Above all else, though, the 2014 is all about harmony, and there is plenty of that here. Unfortunately, production is down 30%. (AG)" (01/2018) 95 points

Wine Advocate:
Wine & Spirits:
"Fine-grained tannins weave together this wines flavors of red cherries and summer strawberries, enlivened by cooling notes of bay leaf, mint and sage. It feels balanced and harmonious, with soft-leather tannins that make it approachable in youth, though, with its lively acidity, it has the potential to improve over several years." (04/2018)

"The 2008 Tignanello is unquestionably one of the wines of the vintage. The 2008 isn't a huge or obvious Tignanello, rather it is a wine that impresses for its sublime elegance and precision. Understated layers of fruit caress the palate like cashmere in this impeccable, soft wine. There is not a hard edge to be found. Black cherries, tobacco, smoke and licorice are some of the notes that come through on the finish. The flavor profile is decidedly on the dark side, but the wine's structure is medium in body and intensity. "The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino comes across as tightly wound and inward at this stage. With time in the glass the wines inner perfume gradually comes to life, even if this remains a reticent Brunello within the context of the vintage. Still, it is impossible not to admire the inner sweetness of the fruit and the impeccable polish of the tannins. All this needs is time, maybe a little more than usual in this vintage. "Caparzo's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna La Casa is a firm and powerful wine with medium-plus concentration and dark fruit flavors. Int'l Wine Review:
"This is a single vineyard designation from the La Casa vineyard, located in the north-central end of Brunello. This wine begins with aromatics of oak, baking spices, black cherry and red raspberry. This leads to flavors of red cherry, alongside lithe minerality. There is a wonderful saline component to the wine alongside some silky tannins. This is one that will just build wonderful complexity with some years in the cellar. These are some compelling releases from Caparzo." (03/2015) 93 points

"Compared to the 2011 vintage, the 2010 Chianti Classico Vigneto Gran Selezione San Lorenzo is a wine of good depth and focus thanks to the cooler vintage. "A drop-dead gorgeous beauty, the 2010 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione San Lorenzo is laced with expressive dark red cherry, plum, smoke, tobacco, mint and licorice. There is a lot going on in the glass. The 2010 boasts exceptional purity in its flavors, along with superb textural elegance and phenomenal overall balance. What a gorgeous wine this is. I imagine the 2010 will drink nicely for many years, but it could use more time in bottle. In 2010, Ama did not bottle their single-vineyard selections. All the best fruit went here. "The 2008 Corbaia is striking in this vintage. A delicate, graceful bouquet gives the impression of femininity, until layers of fruit hit the palate with relentless energy and focus. The 2008 impresses for its balance and overall sense of harmony. The tannins are still huge at this stage, but I sense that as they melt away the wines true pedigree will begin to emerge. This is a great, great showing from Castello di Bossi. Corbaia is 70% Sangiovese and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in new French oak barrels. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2028. (AG)" (06/2012) 91 points

"A formidable, black wine melding Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon, this holds all its heady, pungent fruit in a tight structure. The austere tannins need bottle age or a well-marbled steak to allow the wine to show its best." (04/2014) K&L Notes: From the winery: "The CASTELLO di BOSSI is located in the commune of Castelnuovo Berardenga, on the road that leaves the old Chiantigiana road, at Pianella, and ascends to Brolio amidst evergreen forests and long rows of vines. With its centuries-old trees, its fossil beds, and richly varied native vegetation, this unique spot has always aroused curiosity, even in remote times, and experts have studied its characteristics. The name Bossi would seem to derive from the money chest which the Roman army would carry to its encampments to pay the soldiers; the word probably refers to the boxwood, a rare and prized wood at that time, from which the chest was built. Inscriptions dating from the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, discovered in an ancient wall of the canonry in San Marcellino, indicate that this area was the site of a Roman settlement."

"Bright, fully saturated red. Knockout nose combines raspberry, minerals, sweet spices and violet; the most ethereal nose of any Rancia since the 2006 vintage. Juicy, pure and precise if youthfully tight, offering lovely inner-mouth energy and perfume to the complex flavors of red berries enlivened by orange peel, sweet spices and flowers. Finishes very long and brisk, with juicy acidity that leaves the taste buds vibrating. An absolute beauty, and much less marked by the tobacco, tar and inky notes that have characterized some recent Rancia vintages. "The 2010 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is cool, inward and reserved at this stage. Much less expressive than it was from barrel, today the 2010 appears to be in a closed phase. There is so much tension in the glass, though, and I can hardly wait to see where the 2010 goes over the coming years. A burst of mineral and floral infused fruit lingers on the polished, nuanced finish. Today, the 2010 seems to bring together the finesse of 2004 with the structure and power of the 2010. Wine Advocate:
"The 2009 Flaccianello della Pieve is now hitting that very specific point in a wine's evolution in which you still identity some of the fruit, but you also get a supporting chorus of evolved aromas that enhance the overall finesse and depth of the bouquet. This wine is coming along beautifully and seems right on point in terms of its forward moving aging trajectory. Dried blackberry, cherry confit and plum are rounded out by spice, toast and bitter chocolate. The bouquet fires out on multiple sides, thus increasing the perceived complexity on hand. This vintage is very open and frank, and this is another endearing quality to admire. Interestingly, this vintage saw naturally high yields. Giovanni Manetti tells me they had to work very carefully in terms of green harvest and fruit selection in order to achieve this impeccable level of balance. (ML)" (07/2019) 94 points

Wine Advocate:
"From an iconic vintage that gave generously to all grape varieties across almost all of Tuscany, this wine ranks high on the Fontodi billboard of greatest hits. The 2010 Flaccianello della Pieve is a rock solid wine that sits firm and begins to peel slowly, each delicate layer at a time. It puts on quite a show with a solid core of dark fruit followed by smoke, spice, tar, licorice and delicate blue flower. On previous tastings of this vintage, I had scored it 97 and 97+ points, respectively. I'm going down one point at this sitting because the wine's fiber has unraveled, ever so slightly, at the edges. It still maintains that solid core, but the wine has taken an important jump forward in its evolution these past three years. Evidently, it is currently in a phase of relaxation and unwinding. Beautifully polished notes of Mediterranean herb and dried mint appear on the long, glossy finish. Giovanni Manetti compares the 2010 vintage to 2006 but considers this vintage slightly more approachable overall. (ML)" (07/2019) 96 points

"A linear, taut version, somewhat austere in profile, with racy acidity driving the black cherry, black currant and violet flavors. Intense and persistent, it's long and more mineral than the '11 at this stage. (BS)" (10/2014) 95 points
Decanter:
"After a chilly, wet start, the weather finally became dry and hot in July. Following mid-August showers, the temperatures cooled down, particularly at night. These conditions lasted through September, slowing down ripening. Manetti compares 2010 to 2006 but feels the latter is more approachable. Of the line-up, it comes across as the most darkly-fruited and brooding, with a smouldering, smoky vanilla edge. There's plenty of intensity and power to keep the wine going, but it needs more time to lighten up. (MM)" (10/2018) 94 points
James Suckling:
"This shows plums and currants with blackberries. Full body with soft tannins and a fruity finish. Very fruity and delicious. Made from 100% organically grown Sangiovese grape." (09/2013)

Wine Advocate:
"The 2010 Bolgheri Superiore Guado de' Gemoli almost touches the impossible heights of its predecessor from the excellent 2009 vintage. It is my convinced impression that 2010 offers a very showy and flamboyant interpretation of this 80-20 Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blend. The density is a bit deeper and the aromas are a tad brighter. Compared to the other wines in its blind flight, the Guado de- Gemoli appeared the darkest and most endowed with Indian spice, black soya, espresso and blackberry essence. Finely chiseled mineral tones of granite and smoke snap it back into immediate focus. Give it another ten years of cellar time. (ML)" (09/2013) 93 points

"A plush wine, it's made from 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot. It starts off with aromas of black berries, plum and stewed prunes along with a whiff of cedar. The warm, low-acid palate delivers mature black cherry, black currants, tobacco and black pepper alongside big, ripe tannins and the warmth of the noticeable alcohol. (KO)" (05/2014) K&L Notes: A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot.

Wine Advocate:
"The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli is a phenomenal achievement and a wine that captures not only the spirit of this classic vintage, but the true essence of an age-worthy wine like Brunello. This single vineyard Riserva is sharp, pristine and immaculate. It starts slow and shy, but then blossoms to beautiful intensity and aromatic brilliance. It delivers a very authentic and genuine read of Sangiovese with wild berry aromas followed by pressed violets, wet earth, tobacco and lightly toasted spice. The bouquet is seamless and very long in persistence. The same holds true for the mouthfeel. The wine delivers a fine and silky texture with a good dose of power and personality at the rear. (ML) 98+" (03/2016) 97 points
Decanter:
"Harvested on 22 September, approximately 10 days before Montalcino proper but within the traditional average dates for Il Poggione, this very elegant 2010 is a benchmark of typicity for this estate. It's full of raspberry and pomegranate fruit, with hints of roasted nuts, a touch of dry mushrooms and iodine minerality in depth. It becomes almost silky yet vibrant through the palate. Drinking Window 2019 - 2040 (AF)" (03/2019) 97 points
James Suckling:
"The aromas to this Brunello riserva are stunning with subtle forest fruits, orange peel and mushrooms. Full body, very fine tannins and a long and persistent finish. The flavors are so complex with earth and dark fruits. Very fine and dusty tannins." (09/2015) 95 points
Vinous:
"The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli is magnificent. Huge swaths of tannin coat the palate as the 2010 shows off its power, breadth and overall intensity. Plum, black cherry, bittersweet chocolate, smoke, licorice and cloves are some of the many notes that hit the palate. The Riserva is dark, powerful and brooding. It will require at least a handful of years before it becomes approachable. These old vines, planted in 1964, confer weight, power and gravitas, all qualitites that come through loud and clear on the huge, explosive finish. (AG)" (02/2016) 94 points
Wine Spectator:
"A dense, powerful version, packed with cherry, plum, herb, earth and underbrush flavors. Vibrant, showing solid grip, this ends with echoes of fruit, earth and tobacco. *Highly Recommended* (BS)" (06/2016)

Vinous:
"Isole e Olena's 2010 Cepparello is magnificent. In particular, I admire the way the wine fleshes out in all directions, with seemingly endless layers of dark, mineral-infused berry, plum and pomegranate notes. A primal wine in need of significant cellaring, the 2010 is easily one of the highlights of the year. Bright, saline notes support the precise finish. Today, the 2010 is naturally quite backward and undeveloped, but it should be a gem in another 5-10 years. This is an especially dark, structured Cepparello built for the cellar. The 2010 brightens up with time in the glass, but it remains one of the darker, more brooding wines made in the estate's history. (AG) 96+" (08/2013) 96 points
Wine Enthusiast:
"It opens with an enticing fragrance of black berries, toast, Mediterranean spices and a touch of vanilla. The vibrant, youthful palate delivers a core of black cherry accented with black pepper layered with mocha, mint and tobacco notes. The racy acidity and solid but brooding tannins demonstrate that this wine still needs time to develop to its extraordinary potential. Drink 20182035. *Best of 2014, Cellar Selection* (KO)" (05/2014) 95 points
Wine Advocate:
"The extraordinary 2010 Cepparello (100% Sangiovese aged up to 18 months in oak, one-third new) presents fine nuances of red berry, cherry, spice, tar, licorice, wet earth and forest leaf. The bouquet is very elegant but this wine delivers power too with tight structure that immediately wraps around the palate. Somewhere in the crossroads between tradition and modernity, Cepparello is a stunning wine. (ML)" (08/2013) 93 points
James Suckling:
"This is tangy and delicious with blueberry and cherry character. Full body, with slightly chewy tannins and a bright acidity with a clean and tangy finish. So delicious to drink now. Drink or hold. Sangiovese." (07/2013) 93 points
Decanter:
"In 2010 the estate didn't finish picking until the first days of November due to a long, slow ripening season. The vintage is known for producing wines of structure, and that's the case here, with Cepparello's bright red cherry fruit supported by plentiful tannins. It has quite a sturdy and hard feel to it, but its gumtingling acidity and great balance ensure that further down the road this should be a delightful wine. (JB)" (01/2023) Jancis Robinson:
"Interesting veginess on the nose. Real integrity even if on the lightweight, almost tart spectrum. Lots of depth underneath. Real zest. Long. All on the finish." "One of the stand outs of the vintage, Lisini's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino fleshes out in all directions with gorgeous, expansive richness. The flavors are dark, bold and incisive, yet backed up by notable freshness. A crescendo of incredibly pure dark red and black stone fruits builds on the huge finish. The 2010 is dazzling, but readers will have to be patient. (AG) 95+" (02/2015) 94 points

"Bright, evoking pure cherry and strawberry flavors, with light touches of earth, briar and tobacco in the background. Juicy and elegant, firming up on the long, tea- and iron-accented aftertaste. (BS)" (06/2015) 94 points
James Suckling:
"A silky and refined wine with pepper, spice and berry character. Full body, fine and dense tannins and a juicy finish." (01/2015) 94 points
Wine Advocate:
"Lisini's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino opens to dark concentration and extraction. On first nose, it shows floral aromas of pressed rose and violet, but after a few minutes in the glass the wine begins to offer dark cherry, dried blackberry, Indian spice, teriyaki sauce, crushed mineral, licorice and cola. Its personality bridges aspects of both elegance and power. The 2010 vintage offers a very beautiful interpretation for Carlo Lisini Baldi. The mouthfeel is extremely soft and supple. It delivers pretty end notes of dusty mineral and clay earth. This delicious wine has nowhere to go but forward. (ML)" (02/2015)

Wine & Spirits:
"Notable for its fruit freshness, this finely ripened Brunello has brisk, mineral-inflected tannins to surround its honeyed plum and strawberry flavors. Int'l Wine Cellar:
"Full, saturated ruby. Extremely pure aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, violet, minerals and cocoa. Lush and silky but precise too, with rich, tactile black fruit and mineral flavors lifted by harmonious acidity. The slow-building finish features ripe but very silky tannins and wonderful purity of flavor. A more refined Galatrona than some recent, more tannic versions; cellar it for another four or five years to allow it to build further complexity and depth. (ID) 94+" (09/2012) 94 points
Vinous:
"Very complex and perfumed aromas of black cherry, violet, black tea and minerals. Also complex and perfumed on the palate, with savory blackberry, black pepper and spice flavors showing multilayered depth and a bright mineral overlay. Finishes bright and long, with a fine dusting of noble tannins and a lovely light touch. A lighter styled Galatrona, but a knockout wine. (ID) 94+" (09/2016) 94 points
Wine Spectator:
"The chocolate and cocoa notes highlight the black cherry, blackberry and pomegranate flavors in this dense red. Flamboyant, showing plenty of oak, this remains vibrant, intense and long, with a spicy aftertaste. Merlot. (BS)" (09/2013) 93 points
Wine Advocate:
"The 2010 Galatrona seems to be going through a closed phase at the moment, or perhaps the bottle we opened was not exemplary. The wine boasts an inky dark appearance with sweet aromas of red rose and sweet cherry. You need to swirl your glass with great vigor to dig down deeper. As you do, it slowly releases tones of toasted nut, exotic spice and dark leather. Overall, the bouquet offers less intensity (especially compared to the exuberant, hot vintages 2011 and 2012 tasted prior to this wine in our vertical tasting). The wine ends with integrated fruit flavors and a pretty point of fresh acidity. (ML)" (05/2017) K&L Notes: Wine Advocate on the Galatrona bottling: "Galatrona is one of Italy's top Merlots and the wine has done much to establish the grape's heritage outside celebrated areas such as Pomerol. In fact, the wine is often compared to great expressions from France, but ultimately Galatrona is most distinguished by its sweet and sunny Tuscan disposition. Galatrona was first produced in 1994 and fruit comes from a single vineyard site located adjacent to Petrolo's main building and winery." (05/2017)

"This is a phenomenal pure Merlot with blueberries, raspberries and hints of milk chocolate. Some nutmeg, too. Full body with very fine yet chewy tannins and a long, intense finish. Vinous:
"Petrolo's 2011 Galatrona is just as impressive this year as it was last year. A vivid, voluptuous wine, the 2011 literally jumps from the glass, showing superb intensity, power and depth. Mocha, black cherries, smoke, tobacco and leather are some of the many notes that inform this drop-dead gorgeous, extroverted Galatrona. The style is overt and unabashedly ripe, but all the elements are in the right place. Galatrona fans will adore the 2011. What a gorgeous wine this is. (AG)" (09/2014) 94 points
Wine Advocate:
"Very intense and inky black, the 2011 Galatrona is a hugely ripe red wine. Fruit was picked on August 25th, which is a record in terms of early harvests at this estate. The bouquet revs up slowly with aromas of scorched earth, blackberry confit, toasted espresso and bitter chocolate. You also get a note of savory mineral or burnt flint that adds contours and definition to that significant intensity. The wine offers trace sweetness on the finish that contributes to the opulence and richness of the overall package. (ML)" (05/2017) 94 points
Int'l Wine Cellar:
"Good full ruby. Dark plum, mocha, aromatic herbs, minerals and spicy oak on the nose. Sweet, pliant and inviting, with ripe but very refined flavors of flinty black cherry, plum, mocha and menthol complicated by dried flowers. Finishes extremely long, with exceptional balance, lingering flint and coffee nuances, and sweet, building tannins. Very dense and concentrated but there's nothing over the top about this remarkably elegant wine. One of Italy's greatest Merlots and an exceptional showing in a rather hot year, something that Merlot doesn't normally take a shine to. (ID)" (09/2014) 94 points
Wine Spectator:
"Round and packed with violet, black currant, cherry, mineral and spice flavors, this red is polished, lent support by dense tannins. The spice and toast accents linger on the extended aftertaste. Merlot. (BS)" (01/2014)

"The 2010 Carbonaione (Sangiovese) is a stunner. Deep, rich and utterly impeccable, the 2010 boasts breathtaking richness, energy and power. The flavors remain incredibly primary in a wine that will require years to develop. Graphite, crushed rocks, blue/black fruit, plums and smoke emerge over time. As phenomenal as the 2010 is today, it really should be cellared for at least a few years. This is a drop dead gorgeous wine from Vittorio and Jurij Fiore. (AG)" (08/2013) 96 points
Int'l Wine Review:
"Year after year the Il Carbonaione is a fantastic wine made from 100% Sangiovese and by now should be recognized by all as a flagship Italian wine. The 2010 is no exception, it is an absolutely thrilling wine that brings seductive aromas of pure ripe blackberries and black cherries are followed by espresso, scorched earth, charcoal, exotic spices and hints of herbs, which soar form the glass. It demonstrates amazing balance and finesse with fantastic underlying acidity supported by a gorgeous rich velvety texture that is layered with remarkable depth, leaving you with a lasting impression of delicious dark fruits and roasted coffee flavors that linger on and on. This is probably the best Il Carbonaione I have ever tasted and destined to be a classic, however it will certainly need some time to fully develop in bottle and patience will be handsomely rewarded. *Top 100 of 2013* (JD)" (10/2013) 95 points

Vinous:
"The 2011 Carbonaione is another gorgeous wine in a line of successful vintages that goes all the way back to 1992. Blackberry jam, cloves, menthol, licorice, new leather and sweet spices flesh out in a voluptuous, racy wine that beautifully expresses the personality of the vintage. Today, the 2011 is rich, layered and voluptuous to the core. It is also incredibly primary. Readers who want to experience the 2011 in its full glory will have to wait at least a few years, but there is little question the 2011 is a worthy follow up to the epic 2010. "(100% sangiovese): Inky ruby. A perfumed violet nuance complicates dark plum and blueberry syrup on the enticing nose, with red fruit notes emerging with aeration. Dense, rich and suave, with harmonious acidity providing clarity and cut to the very deep red berry and cocoa flavors. Finishes pure and very long, with silky tannins. This develops more of a red berry profile with aeration. An outstanding wine, but I would have scored it even higher had it reminded me more of sangiovese. (ID)" (09/2014)

Vinous:
"Every bit as monumental as I had hoped, Salvioni's 2006 Brunello di Montalcino is rich, towering and explosive, with fabulous depth and intensity. Dark cherry, smoke, spice, leather and plum gradually open up in a powerful Brunello that still needs time to soften. Epic in its dimension, the 2006 remains one of the very best vintages ever made here. (AG)" (05/2016) 96 points
Wine Advocate:
"Also boasting a traditional winemaking approach, I thought that Salvioni's 2006 Brunello di Montalcino has held together much better than the 2006 Brunello we tasted from Cerbaiona. This is a beautiful wine that delivers a more controlled and consistent evolution. It drinks beautifully right now, but the tonic freshness of the fruit implies that it still has a long way to go. The bouquet opens to fine layers of dried fruit, licorice and balsam herb. Background tones include crushed mineral, tar, juniper and cured bresaola. There is enormous integrity here with energy and zesty crispness at the back. The tannins have been curbed and now show their softness and silkiest form. This is a true beauty and is one of the wines that most delighted me in this tasting. (ML)" (01/2016) 92 points
James Suckling:
"Wonderful aromas of dried porcini and dark fruits follow through to a full body, with silky tannins and a fruity, lightly jammy finish. Fruity and interesting young red." (01/2011) K&L Notes: 95 points, Stephen Tanzer for Vinous: "Good bright deep red. High-pitched aromas of blackberry, dark cherry compote, violet and woodsmoke. Dense, sweet and highly concentrated, with lush flavors of dark raspberry and minerals. Extraordinarily seamless wine with an explosive back half displaying great breadth and length, considerable power and a late hint of underbrush. A beauty." (5/2011)

Decanter:
"The Sassicaia 2013 is just beautiful, and it takes a leap forward in quality. There is even greater precision and transparency with the aromas and flavours, there is a wonderful harmony and ease on the palate and there are even finer, and more seamless tannins on this wine. According to my co-host, Priscilla Incisa Della Rocchetta 2013 was a 'record vintage for Sassicaia'. Carlo Paoli adds, 'spring arrived early but without excess, summer started slowly and was only hot for 20 days and they started harvest mid-September for Cabernet Sauvignon. Everything was slow, calm and beautiful.' The 2013 is at the beginning of its drinking window and drinking beautifully now, but it still has a long time to go. (SH)" (11/2022) 98 points
James Suckling:
"Fabulous structure for a Sassicaia with powerful, polished, chewy tannins and ripe, subtle fruit. Aromas of blueberry, black currant, rosemary and lavender. Full body, bright acidity and a savory finish. Juicy and lively." (11/2016) 98 points
Wine Enthusiast:
"Red berry, cedar and light spice aromas lead the way on this dazzling red. The vibrant palate is loaded with finesse, delivering bright red currant, red raspberry, white pepper and chopped herb alongside bright acidity and firm, polished tannins. Impeccably balanced, it's loaded with elegance, energy and intensity but it's still young, so give it time to fully develop. *Top 100 Cellar Selections of 2017* (KO)" (03/2017) 97 points
Wine Advocate:
"I had reviewed this wine just a few months prior and my impression has remained pretty much the same. One difference I did notice at this more recent tasting of the 2013 Bolgheri Sassicaia is the bouquet. It has shifted to slightly more delicate and finessed aromas of pressed flower and blue violets. You do of course get that solid core of dark fruit and spice that characterizes this famous Tuscan blend. But that extra time in the bottle has awarded wiggle room for profound precision and focused detailing. The wine's complexity emerges slowly with subtle notes of savory spice and tobacco. There is power and depth here, especially in terms of the mouthfeel. As the wine evolves in the glass, it begins to show ethereal tones of road paving, tar and licorice. This Sassicaia should go straight into the cellar. (ML)" (04/2017) 95 points
Jane Anson:
"Light cherry red in colour, with a beautiful vibrancy. On the nose we have clean, bright redcurrant fruits. This is not the most intense year for Sassicaia, yet the palate comes through slowly but steadily, building in momentum until a smoky edge adds depth to the fruit. Gently, carefully the perfumed layers and fragrant richness really start to kick in through the mid palate. There is a sense of the sheer cleverness of the balance. Lingering flavours of sage and blackberry that peep over your shoulder and prove themselves to be remarkably tenacious. Subtly beautiful. They use one-third new oak in all the recent vintages, and it is exceptionally well integrated for such a young wine." (10/2016) 95 points
Wine Spectator:
"A racy, tightly wound style, this offers violet, black currant, cherry, wild herb, spice and mineral flavors matched to a dense, smooth texture. Shows finesse and intensity in a seemingly effortless manner. The aftertaste is long and focused. Should provide years of pleasure. *Collectible* (BS)" (08/2016) 93 points
Wine & Spirits:
"This is an elegant and balanced vintage of Sassicaia, with flavors of ripe red plum and cherry that saturate the palate, mingling with notes of toasted nuts, tobacco and dried fennel. It feels subdued, hemmed in by the polished tannins that will benefit from several years in the cellar. The wine gains depth over several days, maintaining freshness while taking on earthy notes of rooibos tea and roasted beets." (04/2017)

Wine Advocate:
"The 2008 Arcanum is a monumental achievement and my favorite wine in an already impossibly impressive collection. The blend sees Cabernet Franc (77%), Merlot and a very small part of Cabernet Sauvignon. Like many Tuscany growers, Tenuta di Arceno is betting on Cabernet Francs performance in the warmer corners of Tuscany. The integration here is absolutely beautiful and the wine glides smoothly over the palate with the perfect balance of extraction, glycerin, residual sugar and acidity. The aromas span the spectrum, from bright cherry to dark chocolate. (ML)" (08/2013) 92 points

"Wonderful perfumes to this wine with hints of hot stone, blackberry, orange peel and nectarine on the nose. Full body with a beautiful concentration of fruit and compacted tannins. The texture is ever so silky and fine. It goes on for minutes. A beauty. Hot-stone character at the finish, too. A gorgeous, friendly wine. Drink or hold." (12/2015) 94 points
Wine Advocate:
"The elegant 2010 Brunello di Montalcino shows an impressive degree of inner grace and harmony. This wine expresses itself articulately with the softest tones. No part of its message is too loud. In fact, it whispers seductively with small fruit aromas, forest bramble, root beer, dried herb and balsam notes. The effect is feminine and finessed. Polished tannins make way for fresh acidity and long persistency. This Brunello sees 30 months of aging in large oak casks and is fermented with indigenous yeasts. (ML)" (02/2015) 93 points
Int'l Wine Review:
"The 2010 Tenuta di Sesta is a gorgeous wine, with aromas of sweet red berries and plum which are mixed with spices, licorice, citrus peel and fresh floral. Decanter:
"Slightly subdued on the nose, then fresher, richer and more intense on the palate with spicy red berry and iron flavours. Cocktail of spices at the back palate with plenty of leather and cigar hints. "The salinity comes through clearly at this point, which gives beautiful lift and grip. I just love how Sassicaia wines can play with tannins. They start so delicate and soft and yet close in beautifully. This has more grip and youth than the 2007. The rosemary and heat-baked herbs of Tuscany stand shoulder to shoulder with a concentrated blackberry richness and a salty tang that delivers freshness. This is the magic of Bolgheri the coastal influence and the old vines. (JA)" (10/2016) 95 points

Int'l Wine Cellar:
"(80% cabernet sauvignon and 20% cabernet franc) Dark ruby-red. Appealing smoky, minerally aromas of red cherry, blackcurrant and plum, with a hint of truffle. Quite suave on entry, then smooth and fine-grained, with good mineral lift to the decidedly sweet red fruit flavors. This broad, rich and supple wine boasts tremendous length and silky-sweet tannins. A great Sassicaia that falls roughly between the '88 and the '85 in style at the similar stage of development, although I'm not sure the new vintage will attain the heights reached by those earlier wines. (ID)" (09/2006) 93 points
Vinous:
"Ample, sweet and expansive, the 2003 Sassicaia offers generous notes of sweet dark fruit intermingled with notes of spices, herbs, earthiness and smoke in a full-bodied, opulent expression of this wine. It is an outstanding effort for the vintage. Some cellaring is suggested although with air this wine is drinking beautifully right now. (AG)" (02/2007) 92 points

"Lots of raspberry and cherry on the nose. Full-bodied and chunky with lots of fruit and a long, velvety finish. Hints of new wood. Big and juicy Sassicaia. Very well done for the vintage." (07/2006) 92 points
Wine Advocate:
"The 2003 Bolgheri Sassicaia is full of unexpected twists and turns. Oddly enough, this vintage offered more overall freshness and balance than the much-celebrated 2004 edition. We all know that 2003 was a very difficult year with scorching hot temperatures that broke all records. Instead of jammy flavors or overt ripeness, this wine has embraced an all-balsam aromatic profile instead. The bouquet opens to dried cassis or red currant with eucalyptus, cola, grilled rosemary and medicinal herb. The tannins are silky and fully integrated within the wine's thick textural richness. There are areas that feel flat and sedate, but this is an impressive effort overall that shows impressive stability considering the challenges of the growing season. (ML)" (04/2017) 91 points
Wine Enthusiast:
"It's almost criminal to taste Sassicaia before its prime. The 2003 vintage should be ready after 2010. A blend of 85% Cab Sauvignon and 15% Cab Franc that aged 24 months in barrique, notes of cassis, exotic spice, menthol and green olive come through despite the hot vintage. It's powerful in the mouth with crispness and refined tannins." (09/2006) Jancis Robinson:
"Big and rustic in its early stages, said technical director Sebastiano Rosa. More herbal and perfumed and open than the 2006. Black olives very similar to the 2003 Guidalberto in vintage characteristics. Savoury and mouthwatering on the palate. Dry, savoury length. Like a food. Very satisfying and nourishing. Tannins seem to have more grip than the 2006, less refined, less mineral. More rustic and a little drier on the finish than the 06. 17.5/20 points (JH)" (03/2010)

Wine Advocate:
"The 2008 Oreno is stunningly beautiful. An open, expressive bouquet laced with mint, red berries, roses and spices emerges with superb clarity and balance. The tension between the minerality of the vintage and the rich expression of fruit that is one of the house's hallmarks play off each other beautifully here. The finish is utterly exquisite in its beguiling beauty. The 2008 isn't the most powerful Oreno ever made, but it is quite possibly the most elegant, impeccably refined wine I have ever tasted here. Simply put, it is fabulous juice! In 2008 the percentage of Sangiovese is way down and Oreno is predominantly Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, a decision that has paid off handsomely. Wine Spectator:
"Structured and racy, showing blueberry and chocolate aromas and flavors, with loads of currant. Full and tannic, yet polished and caressing, with an impressive and persistent finish. A marked change from some past vintages, with only Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot in the blend. (JS)" (10/2010) 94 points
Int'l Wine Review:
"The 2008 Oreno is composed of 45% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Petit Verdot. It delivers intense aromas of black cherry, cassis followed by earthy minerals, spices, mocha and vanilla. This possesses a full body with a gorgeous round texture that shows wonderful depth and focus ending with a long juicy finish. Although this is showing well today, it will still likely benefit from a few more years of bottle age. (JD)" (05/2014)

James Suckling:
"There is a purity of fruit in this young Tuscan red, with flowers, citrus fruit and currants. Full body with firm, silky tannins that are ultra-fine and wonderfully polished. The structure builds to a racy finish. This is a Bordeaux blend that is all in harmony. Give it time: the tannins and fruit will melt together." (11/2013) 94 points
Int'l Wine Review:
"The 2011 Oreno is a superb showing, it brings aromas and flavors of fresh blackberry, cassis, vanilla, spices, violet, mocha and hints of toast. It possesses a full body with round, polished tannins and a lovely velvety texture, with a sense of vibrancy from the underlying acidity. The finish is long and caressing leaving behinds another layer of dark fruits, spices and vanilla. Today, it needs just a bit more time, but this will be an wonderful Oreno. Composed of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. (JD)" (07/2014) 94 points
Vinous:
"The 2011 Oreno wraps around the palate with gorgeous resonance and silkiness. Mocha, cloves, leather and dark spices all add nuance to a core of voluptuous, racy fruit. This is a typical 2011 long on texture, resonance and early appeal. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off the 2011, as it is already striking. The style is ripe, intense and full-bodied, yet all the elements fall into place effortlessly. (AG)" (09/2014) 93 points

"Aromas of black plum, pipe tobacco, cooking spice and crushed herb lead the nose on this structured blend of 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot. The smooth palate delivers dried blackcurrant, blackberry extract, licorice and clove wrapped up in velvety tannins. (KO)" (08/2015) 92 points

"Though rich, this red is also vibrant, balanced and full of generous black cherry and blackberry flavors. Hints of spice and smoke add accents to the long, satisfying finish. (BS)" (10/2013) 92 points
Wine Advocate:
"The 2011 Oreno (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot) shows initial ripeness with aromas of prune, dark plum and blackberry preserves. The effect is soft, rich and enduring. Chocolate and dark spice fill in the rear. This wine will appeal to those who appreciate the round and plump side of Italian reds. It is a fruit forward expression with big concentration and extraction that is further defined by the spicy oak tones that appear throughout. (ML)" (09/2015)

James Suckling:
"This is so structured. Stunning. Decadent aromas of plum and roasted meat, then turns to toffee, follows through to a full body, with chewy tannins and a mineral, dried flower undertone. Tannic. Lots of dried fruits on the palate. This needs some bottle age to soften. Very powerful and structured. Amazing." (01/2011) 96 points
Wine Advocate:
"The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino is a striking wine blessed with gorgeous clarity and precision in an effortless, weightless style. Dark cherries, tobacco, incense, dried flowers and minerals come together beautifully in the glass in this sensual, understated wine. Tobacco, licorice, menthol and an assortment of other balsamic aromas and flavors add complexity and character to the vivid, textured finish. This is a fabulous effort from proprietor Andrea Cortonesi. I would be hard-pressed to name another grower who has made such huge strides in recent years as has Andrea Cortonesi. The artisan tradition of Montalcino is alive and well in this small, no-frills winery, while the wines have never been better. (AG)" (05/2011) 94 points
