2010 Petrolo "Galatrona" Toscana

SKU #1142962 95 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Aromas of black olives, violets and fresh fruit follow through to a full body, with a dense palate of dark fruits and olives. Long and polished. Handmade wine. You sense it. Pure Merlot sensation. Inner quote mark (8/2012)

94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Outer quote mark Full, saturated ruby. Extremely pure aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, violet, minerals and cocoa. Lush and silky but precise too, with rich, tactile black fruit and mineral flavors lifted by harmonious acidity. The slow-building finish features ripe but very silky tannins and wonderful purity of flavor. A more refined Galatrona than some recent, more tannic versions; cellar it for another four or five years to allow it to build further complexity and depth. (ID) 94+ Inner quote mark (9/2012)

94 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark The chocolate and cocoa notes highlight the black cherry, blackberry and pomegranate flavors in this dense red. Flamboyant, showing plenty of oak, this remains vibrant, intense and long, with a spicy aftertaste. Merlot. Best from 2016 through 2026. (BS) Inner quote mark (9/2013)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2010 Galatrona seems to be going through a closed phase at the moment, or perhaps the bottle we opened was not exemplary. The wine boasts an inky dark appearance with sweet aromas of red rose and sweet cherry. You need to swirl your glass with great vigor to dig down deeper. As you do, it slowly releases tones of toasted nut, exotic spice and dark leather. Overall, the bouquet offers less intensity (especially compared to the exuberant, hot vintages 2011 and 2012 tasted prior to this wine in our vertical tasting). The wine ends with integrated fruit flavors and a pretty point of fresh acidity. 93? (ML) Inner quote mark (5/2017)

92 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Black cherries, smoke, incense, melted road tar and graphite meld into black fruit as the 2010 Galatrona (Merlot) opens up in the glass. This is a decidedly backward, brooding Galatrona that will require more patience than normal. Today, the 2010 comes across as not fully developed and in need of time to integtrated the French oak. (AG) Inner quote mark (8/2013)

K&L Notes

Wine Advocate on the Galatrona bottling: "Galatrona is one of Italy's top Merlots and the wine has done much to establish the grape's heritage outside celebrated areas such as Pomerol. In fact, the wine is often compared to great expressions from France, but ultimately Galatrona is most distinguished by its sweet and sunny Tuscan disposition. Galatrona was first produced in 1994 and fruit comes from a single vineyard site located adjacent to Petrolo's main building and winery." (05/2017)
