Chiseled golden apple frolics with brioche and bruised yellow pear on the nose that is accented by baby's breath. Stony minerality infuses the palate that brings in bread dough and lemon peel. This wine's citrus lift would complement shrimp cocktail, sushi and grilled asparagus.(AC)

Domaine Guillaume Curveux Pouilly Fuisse 1er Cru "Les Vignes Blanches"
2024 Domaine Guillaume Curveux Pouilly Fuisse 1er Cru "Les Vignes Blanches"

When I first tasted the Vignes Blanches from Curveux, I wrote down in my notes: "I can't decide if Premier Cru Pouilly-Fuissé of this quality shouldn't be possible at this price, or if I'm just overzealous in my first week on the job." Lo and behold, over a month, and half-a-hundred Pouilly-Fuissés later, I still haven't tasted one that struck me like this bottle did. It's a lush and doughy and superbly textured, with wonderful lift from the always-energetic 2024 vintage. A wine that you taste and are certain you’ll have to pay an arm and a leg to enjoy it, and then celebrate with a second bottle when you find out it’s under $30!

Domaine Ramonet Meursault 1er Cru "Blagny"
2023 Domaine Ramonet Meursault 1er Cru "Blagny"

Pierre Ramonet arrived in Chassagne-Montrachet in the late 1920s with, as the family tells it, a knapsack and not much else, bought grapes and made wine until he could afford vines, and in 1934 made his first purchase in Les Ruchottes, the premier cru that would make his name. Frank Schoonmaker found him early and sent the wines to America, and Pierre never stopped buying: Bâtard and Bienvenues from Domaine Coquet in the 1950s, and in 1978, at 72, a quarter hectare of Montrachet paid for with his savings. He died in 1994 at 88, having handed the work to his grandsons Noël and Jean-Claude a decade earlier. Since 2013 the labels have read Jean-Claude Ramonet, and Jean-Claude now runs the domaine with his daughter Anne-France. The holdings are what every white Burgundy lover dreams about: Montrachet, Bâtard, Bienvenues and a sliver of Chevalier, plus Ruchottes, Caillerets, Morgeot, Boudriotte, Vergers and Chaumées in Chassagne, with Saint-Aubin and Puligny alongside. The cellar is old-fashioned and unhurried, with fermentation on native yeasts and 12 to 15 months in barrel, new oak kept to a modest share even for the grands crus. Decanter calls Ramonet one of the best white wine producers on the planet, and we’re not inclined to argue: these are the Chassagnes we buy whenever we can, with the Ruchottes and the Morgeot the ones that turn up most often on our own shelves.

The 2024 ranks among the best vintages of Leflaive's Bâtard I have tasted. There is a lovely freshness without sacrificing the richness that is the charm of a proper Bâtard. The wine surprises with profuse aromas of ripe pear, acacia flower, chalk and spice; the texture is dense but very fine, bringing impressive persistence to the finish. The wine is completely, convincingly delicious. The difficult 2024 vintage required extensive sorting, but the team did what was necessary to produce a truly memorable result.

As is often the case when young, the nose closely resembles that of the Pucelles with just a bit more layering. By contrast, there is definitely more size, weight and power to the bigger-bodied still yet refined and wonderfully energetic flavors that coat the palate with dry extract while delivering outstanding persistence on the compact, balanced and Zen-like finale. Note: from 60+ year old vines and the vineyard is a whopping 4 ha monopole within Perrières. Here too the lightly wooded nose displays a panoply of floral nuances that include rose petal, lilac and acacia blossom with additional notes of just grated zest, spice and green apple. There is almost painful intensity to the slightly more concentrated and more mineral-driven flavors that conclude in a chiseled, youthfully austere and sneaky long finale that seems to go on and on. Bid on this bottle of 1988 Domaine du Clos Frantin (Bichot) Chambertin Grand Cru. Neal Martin writes: "Domaine du Clos Frantin is owned by Maison Albert Bichot. Their Clos de Vougeot vines are located in two parcels – a smaller plot on the upper reaches of the clos and a larger parcel lower down, stretching from the mid-slope down to the RN74 artery. Though they have experimented with separate cuvees in the past, the winemaking team feels that an assemblage of the two creates a more complete Clos de Vougeot. The fruit is partly de-stemmed, the whole bunches individually selected, after which follows a three- to four-week maceration in temperature-controlled conical oak vats where punching down is conducted manually. The Clos de Vougeot is usually aged for up to two years in 60% new oak."

Bid on this bottle of 1992 Domaine François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru "Montée de Tonnerre" (93BH, 93VN). Vinous: " The 1992 Chablis Montée de Tonerre 1er Cru is impressive but richer and more botrytised in style than expected. It is atypical for a 1992 white: deeper in colour with dried honey, beeswax, acacia, and lanolin on the enticing nose. There is something…burly about it. The palate is slightly viscous in texture, powerful and with greater density than one would expect. Forget the tension and steeliness you can find in the best ’92 Burgundy whites—this cuvée is rich yet retains acidity. After 33 years, whatever residual sugar had been floating in the wine was finally dried out or subsumed so that the finish bears some similitude to a Sauternes with mileage. Wonderful. 1996 Domaine d'Auvenay (Lalou Bize-Leroy) Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru

Bid on this bottle of 1996 Domaine d'Auvenay (Lalou Bize-Leroy) Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru (97DC). Decanter: "This wine has extraordinary concentration and power, with a deep, youthful aroma of plum and blackberry fruit overlaid with notes of mineral, peony, and leather and a distinctly savoury roast quality. The texture is still youthfully dense, tannic, and rich, with superb length and impressive complexity on the lingering finish. Drinking this wine 20 years after the harvest with collector friends, it had hardly seemed to evolve at all. Accessible now, it will only continue to improve for decades to come. (Drink between 2023-2050) (CC)" (03/2016)
