From the only producer to use the AP Charlemagne label, this shows a lovely citrussy nose with hints of mineral and hawthorn flowers. The texture is compact but not heavy; there is abundant acidity to balance the impressive level of extract, and an immensely satisfying finish. It is produced from two parcels totalling 0.5ha. One faces south on the Aloxe side, and one faces west on the Pernand side. The combination is compelling and should not be overlooked. (Drink between 2025-2040)

Glowing pale yellow. A slight reduction, this time more on the fruit than the wood. A lively fruit with good acidity and exceptional tension at the back, lively citrus, minerals wherever you look, and a long clean balanced finish. More minerals than flesh in 2021. Drink from 2027-2034.

The 2021 Charlemagne Grand Cru comes from two parcels, the En Charlemagne lieu-dit picked a week after Le Charlemagne. This has one of my favourite noses from Vougeraie; it's quite refined and complex, more mineral-driven with hints of dried white flowers. The palate is well balanced with a tangy opening, fresh and crisp with a touch of bitter lemon and orange rind towards the finish. This should age well in bottle and conveys a sense of class. (Drink between 2024-2038)

A distinctly cool and restrained nose only grudgingly offers up its aromas of Granny Smith apples, lemon confit, white flower and wet stone. There is excellent intensity to the delicious bigger-bodied flavors that brim with both minerality and sappy dry extract where the latter helps to buffer the markedly bright acidity supporting the power, serious, youthfully austere and bone-dry finale. At least some patience strongly advised as this is very tightly coiled. (Drink starting 2029)

Notes

Domaine de la Vougeraie was created in 1999 when Jean-Claude Boisset gathered the best vineyards his family had bought over 35 years, starting with Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles in 1964, into a single estate named for the family home in Vougeot. It runs about 40 hectares across more than 30 appellations, farmed biodynamically since 2001 under Sylvie Poillot, who took over the winemaking team when Pierre Vincent left for Domaine Leflaive after 2016. The reputation rests on Côte de Nuits grands crus, which is why the whites deserve a look: they get grand cru care and carry a Côte de Nuits address, so they sit outside the Puligny and Meursault price spiral. The flagship is Le Clos Blanc de Vougeot, a 2.3-hectare walled monopole beside the château that the monks of Cîteaux set aside for white grapes around 1110 and that has never grown anything else. It’s mostly Chardonnay with a little Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc, the only premier cru white in Vougeot. Behind it come the village Vougeot Clos du Prieuré blanc from another walled plot at the edge of the village, a Beaune blanc from Montée Rouge and La Maladière, and at the top a Corton-Charlemagne from the Le Charlemagne climat. The whites are pressed whole-cluster and raised in barrel with new wood matched to each plot rather than set by formula.
