Burgundy

Welcome to one of the most historic wine regions in the world, a province of eastern France that is famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of other grapes are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) This is complicated and exciting territory - the hallowed ground where more than a few bonafide wine geeks end up. View our selection...

2016 Château de la Charriere Bourgogne Pinot Noir Top Pick!
2016 Château de la Charriere Bourgogne Pinot Noir

This fruit-forward Bourgogne is backed by plenty of tannins from vines with an average age of 35 years, planted at a density of 10,000 vines per hectare. Hand-harvested and completely destemmed, the grapes fermented for more than two weeks and the wine aged for up to a year in mostly neutral French oak barrels.

Louis Bouillot Crémant de Bourgogne "Perle d'Aurore" Brut Rosé

90 points Decanter: "The Louis Bouillot ‘Perle’ series is exceptionally well-crafted for its price and all of the wines are recommendable. I’ve picked out the Rosé Perle d’Aurore, though, as rosé is something of a Bouillot speciality (over a million bottles are produced every year) and it’s a wine which isn’t shy about its burgundian identity. “We want,” says Marcel Combes, “vinosity above all, almost a touch of tannin, with what you could almost call a compote style of fruit.” Autumn red fruits are there on the nose, but in a soft and understated style; on the palate, by ...Read More »

2016 Maison Louis Latour Grand Cru Corton "Grancey" (Pre-Arrival)

99 points James Suckling: "Love the depth of fruit and intensity of this wine. It has dark fruit and floral undertones, as well as meat, which is very captivating. Full body, purity of fruit and nice, powerful tannins. Chewy and powerful. Focused austerity. A wine for the cellar. Try in 2022." (2/2018) 90-93 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Moderate reduction and wood toast make for a very pungent nose. Otherwise there is excellent volume to the relatively refined mouth feel thanks to the dense but fine tannins shaping the youthfully austere, complex and impressively persistent finish. This will clearly need at least som ...Read More »

Domaine Renaud is a small operation, making Mâcon, Pouilly-Fuissé and St. Veran from 12 hectares of estate vineyards. This value is a great alternative to California Chardonnay and an entry into white Burgundy.

2016 Domaine Paul Pernot Bourgogne Chardonnay Top Pick!
2016 Domaine Paul Pernot Bourgogne Chardonnay

Allen Meadows - Burghound: "(from Puligny vines on the Meursault border – vinified in stainless steel). More pungent aromas features notes of petrol, straw and spiced pear. There is a bit more volume to the seductively textured medium weight flavors that offer fine depth and persistence on the slightly more structured finale. This is a fine example of the genre and one that would make a good choice for an all-around house white." 2016 Kalinda Bourgogne Blanc Top Pick!
2016 Kalinda Bourgogne Blanc

For decades now, our Kalinda private label has been providing K&L customers with awesome wines at a fraction of what they'd normally pay under the producers' mainstay labels. 2016 was such a short vintage in Burgundy that many producers had to source new fruit just to fill the barrels. The good news is the quality of the 2016 vintage was spectacular, so the fruit they purchased was exceptional in most cases. This is exactly what happened to Jacque Bavard, one of our favorite producers in Burgundy, and the reason we can offer our first Bourgogne Blanc und... Read More »

2016 Domaine Francois Carillon Bourgogne Blanc

Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A pretty nose combines notes of various white-fleshed fruit with those of soft citrus and floral nuances. There is both good volume and intensity to the slightly fruity flavors that possess acceptable depth and persistence on the attractively dry finale." (6/2018) Decanter: "A pretty bouquet of confit citrus and white flowers, framed by a subtle hint of oak, introduces a full-bodied, nicely concentrated wine with good depth, freshness and dimension for its level. An impressive introduction to the François Carillon range. Drinking Window 2018-2022. (WK)" (10/2017)

This is a very good Bourgogne though it's one that will need at least a year or two of bottle age first." (6/2018) Wine Spectator: "A compact style, offering lemon, apple and light spice flavors that take on a tactile feel on the finish. Offers just a hint of citrus peel bitterness for lift. Drink now. 2016 Domaine Jean-Michel Giboulot Bourgogne Pinot Noir

Jean-Michel is the third Giboulot to head the family estate in Savigny-lès-Beaune, having presided over the 12 hectares in Beaune, Pommard, and Savigny since 1982. Following Jean-Michel's recent conversion to organic farming, the wines have become fresher and rounder, and the increased proportion of destemmed fruit has helped this transition in style. Much as with Giboulot's 2015s, his 2016s are undoubtedly some of the best we've tasted yet from the portfolio, one that we've been working with directly now for a number of years.

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2015 Mâcon-Fuissé Vers Chânes comes from 0.90 hectare of 30-year-old vines and is matured for 14 months in vat. It has a slightly more austere, backward bouquet, perhaps more like a 2016 than a 2015, eschewing the richness of the growing season but delivering satisfying mineral tension. The palate is well balanced with a fresh, apricot and orange zest-tinged entry, a fine bead of acidity and respectable weight and tension on the long finish. Very fine. 2014 Vignerons des Terres Secretes St-Véran "Les Cras" (Previously $19)

A winemaking cooperative in the Mâconnais, comprising members who seek out the most "secret" plots of earth to make their distinctive wines. This bottling comes from a vineyard in St-Véran, bordering Pouilly-Fuissé, with chalky white and very stony limestone soils. (ST)" (9/2017) K&L Notes: Jasper Morris (MW): "From vines situated below Meursault and Puligny plus village St-Romain and Auxey-Duresses. There is a bit more volume to the medium-bodied flavors that possess a velvety mid-palate while delivering better persistence on the ever-so-slightly rustic finish. This too is quite good." (1/2018) 91 points James Suckling: "Deep black plums on the nose with some spices and licorice. Serious concentration for this appellation. 2016 Maison Olivier Leflaive Meursault

93-94 points James Suckling: "The density and richness to this wine is outstanding. Sliced apples, pineapples and straw. Medium- to full-bodied, dense and brightly acidic. Excellent depth. Drink and enjoy on release." (2/2018) 88-91 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Firm reduction masks the fruit. Otherwise the medium-bodied flavors possess a sleek mouth feel with good delineation and energy suffusing the caressing but intense finale that is markedly citrus-inflected. This needs to develop better depth but the underlying material appears to be present for that to happen." (6/2018) 90 points Wine Spectator: "A mix of apple, peach, melon and spice flavors ...Read More »

2016 Domaine Jean-Michel Giboulot Savigny-lès-Beaune Top Pick!
2016 Domaine Jean-Michel Giboulot Savigny-lès-Beaune

Jean-Michel Giboulot took over the family business in 1982 and has put together one of the best bang-for-your-buck portfolios in all of Burgundy over the last three-plus decades. His wines are known as great values out of Burgundy's Savigny-les-Beaune appellation and both the reds and whites are equally strong. Giboulet's wines straddle the line between traditional and modern with reds that have crunchier fruit and fine tannins, but plenty of ripeness and pureness of fruit. The whites are done in a feminine style with rounder fruit and a certain elegance... Read More »

2016 Chateau de la Charriere Santenay "Les Charmes Dessus" Rouge

The Girardin family has cultivated the vine for 13 generations, and the domaine developed in the sixties thanks to Jean Girardin, notably with the acquisition of Château de la Charrière. Having passed his childhood amongst the vines and in the cellar, Yves developed a passion for all aspects of wine and its culture. In 1981 the family holding of 12 hectares was divided, and Yves found himself at the head of 3 hectares.
