Daniel Bouju Tres Vieux "Brut de Fut" K&L Exclusive Premier Cru de Cognac Grand Champagne Cognac
Daniel Bouju Tres Vieux "Brut de Fut" K&L Exclusive Premier Cru de Cognac Grand Champagne Cognac

This is one of the most exciting Cognacs we've ever stocked, particularly now that we're able to offer it at a price that better reflects just how extraordinary the age and pedigree are. It's a total bomb, not suited for most large-house Cognac drinkers, but it will easily win over lovers of old, unobtainable American whiskey, intensely sherried malt, or cask-strength Armagnac. Lovers of dense and powerful dark spirits of any kind, take note. This is a selection from Bouju's oldest stocks, with a minimum age of around 40 years and a not insignificant proportion of brandies much, much older, perhaps 80+ years old. According to M. Bouju, it's bottled without coloring, filtration, or reduction of any kind. He insists the excessively dark color is the result of that lack of reduction, something that normally happens several times during an eau-de-vie's maturation and blending. Instead, he distills and reduces slightly before barreling, then does absolutely nothing else for the next four decades. When it reaches 100 proof naturally, it's transferred into a special vat, from which only a portion is removed for each bottling. So the young, 40-year-old Cognac mingles with small portions of every previous batch that has gone into the vat. The resulting Cognac is a force of nature. The nose puts us squarely in bourbon land: dense, dry, and woodsy, with fruit compote of figs and plums, cacao nibs, sweet herbs, and all kinds of baking spice. Relatively gentle on the palate considering the high proof, but very dry, with dark fruit and a huge minty, herbal finish. A benchmark by any standard. 5 Stars.

Daniel Bouju "Royal" Brut De Fut Grand Champagne Cognac
Daniel Bouju "Royal" Brut De Fut Grand Champagne Cognac

This is a monster. We rarely see high-proof Cognac that's both affordable and delicious, but the Royal is exactly that. The Royal is bottled at an astonishing 120 proof, yet the nose exhibits no bitter ethanol or burn. The high proof is a vehicle for aroma and flavor here. Instead of harshness, we get a pungent mixture of dried stone fruit, varnishy old wood, tobacco, and wooden cellar. The palate is ultra-textured and concentrated, with a building peppery spice that overwhelms the fruit by the finish. A heavy, almost thick, and sweeter-than-expected entry leads to a bold, spicy, dry finish. It's an absolute treat. Bouju claims to add absolutely nothing to this special Cognac, and that big, dry finish might confirm his claims. A stupendous product with a cult following. It never lasts long when we have it.

Chateau de Beaulon VSOP "Folle Blanche" Single Estate Cognac (750ml)
Chateau de Beaulon VSOP "Folle Blanche" Single Estate Cognac (750ml)

The Cognac category is in a strange place. Once the absolute top dog of the spirits business, today the major houses are playing defense. The big brands are hurting, and the sad truth is that their struggles also hurt the small estates that support those giant operations. But if you care about the little guy, K&L has always offered access to great independent producers who would otherwise remain off most people’s radar. While the romance of small producers is undeniable, the real reason we sell these Cognacs over those from the big houses is that the price-to-quality ratio is simply astounding. This famous estate near the Gironde is situated in a unique little section of the Fins Bois around the town of Mirambeau, an island of higher-quality soils carved out of the less-regarded Bons Bois. As we have noted many times over the years, soil quality has less to do with the potential to make delicious Cognac than with the likelihood of distilling exceptionally age-worthy eau-de-vie. For that reason, we have often preferred younger spirits from the Fins Bois and Bons Bois to similarly aged examples from the highly prized Grande and Petite Champagne crus. But this special estate does not merely possess exceptional soils. It seems to be doing everything right, yet almost no one stateside has heard of it. Its old-vine vineyards are among the most picturesque in all of Cognac, while the château and cellars are second to none. Nevertheless, here we are selling a seven-year-old VSOP, which would have qualified as XO before the regulations changed in 2018, distilled from old-vine Folle Blanche for just $65. It seems that few people are listening to the Cognacais, but if you open your mind to the extraordinary value these products provide, you may discover that Cognac is ready to become one of the world’s great spirits categories once again. Let’s taste this special treat. The color is a radiant auburn. The nose delivers an absurdly ripe bouquet that seems decades beyond its stated age. Perhaps the magicians at Beaulon are blending some significantly older stock into this beautiful Folle Blanche. Aromas of sweet caramel sauce, apricot jam, roasted oak, Seville orange peel, cubeb, ajwain, and saffron leap from the glass. The palate is exceptionally well balanced and rounded without becoming syrupy or excessively caramel-driven. Instead, a vivid burst of baking spice cuts through the opulence and dries the mid-palate. Medium-bodied and impressively persistent, though not interminable, it occupies a beautiful middle ground, offering some of the aromatic depth of very old, rare Cognac while retaining plenty of zesty verve on the palate. Perhaps it is the Folle Blanche that creates this thrilling dichotomy, but at this price, it is simply a steal.

Dudognon "Vieille Reserve" Grand Champagne Cognac (750ml)
Dudognon "Vieille Reserve" Grand Champagne Cognac (750ml)

94WE

Age makes all the difference in Grande Champagne, and at 20 years old, this Cognac has begun to show its elegance and depth. Pronounced aromas of dried rose, peach jam, marmalade, toasted nuts and the beginning of rancio glide softly on to a palate of baked, spiced pear, warm pastry, and a savory note on the finish. My favorite of the Dudognon collection. (JW)

PM Spirits Remi Landier Collab "Special Pale" VSOP Unfiltered No Additive Fin Bois Cognac (750ml)
2015 PM Spirits Remi Landier Collab "Special Pale" VSOP Unfiltered No Additive Fin Bois Cognac (750ml)

The secretive world of Cognac remains one of the most poorly understood spirits categories, especially considering its broad popularity. Perhaps that lack of transparency is hurting the category, but nothing about Cognac is straightforward or simple. When I first visited the region, I was a young and ardent supporter of additive-free spirits, searching far and wide for excellent, unadulterated expressions to bring home to our customers. We found some very special lots here and there, but it was also clear that a great deal of additive-free Cognac needed those additives, or “blending materials,” as they preferred to call them, to feel complete. I was astounded by the doublespeak and subterfuge surrounding the subject, even among the most reputable houses, both large and small. When we raised the question at the wonderful Ragnaud-Sabourin estate, in the heart of Grande Champagne, the curtain was finally pulled back. Madame Ragnaud was remarkably open about the process, explaining that the wonderful Ragnaud products we knew were built in part around the extraordinary boisé the family had cultivated over many decades. Their oldest and most prized eaux-de-vie, once they had fallen below proof, were segregated and cared for with great reverence, then incorporated in increasingly generous proportions throughout the range. After tasting her exquisite example of the right way to use additives in Cognac, along with literally hundreds of undrinkable young additive-free Cognacs, not to mention plenty of fully dosed young Cognacs that were equally bad, our hardline view began to soften. At the same time, our appreciation grew for those rare producers capable of creating a beautifully balanced spirit without relying on the traditional tools of the trade. It was at that moment that the extraordinary brandies of the Dudognon estate rose in my mind above nearly all others. Their ability to produce such impeccable Cognac without additives suddenly seemed even more remarkable. The Dudognons’ admission that their refusal to use additives was not some dogmatic battle cry, but simply the result of never having learned those techniques, only reinforced the point. Their Cognac was not built around ideology. It was built around exceptional farming, distillation, aging, and instinct. The point of this story is to highlight just how difficult it is to create superlative young Cognac without high-quality boisé serving as the backbone of the blending process. Finding the balance between freshness, oak, fruit, spice, and all the other flavors we expect after only five or seven years in a spirit capable of aging for a century is almost unbelievable. So when we first encountered this special product, I was not remotely shocked to learn that it was intended to sell for more than $100. This batch was purpose-built to achieve a nearly impossible goal. Its quality far exceeds even my wildest expectations, and while I am not necessarily surprised that the producer could not sell through it at the original price, that does not mean it was not worth every penny they were asking. So here we are with an outrageously delicious Cognac, created around a commitment to avoid additives while still delivering a genuinely grandiose experience. Is it simply a younger, more affordable version of Dudognon? Let’s find out. The color is a surprisingly robust deep copper, around 1.0. Many, if not all, of the young additive-free Cognacs we have sold over the years have been closer to white wine or pale straw. Here, the aromas begin to emerge the moment the bottle is opened, and once poured, there is no need to wait for the magic to begin. The layered aromatic profile starts with expressive tropical fruit wrapped in baking spice, slathered in coconut cream, and dusted with cocoa powder. It is far less primary than expected, offering secondary and tertiary notes normally reserved for much older expressions from Grande Champagne. This may be the secret of Fins Bois on full display. When handled perfectly, the faster development associated with this supposedly lesser region can mimic the complexity of far older and more expensive Cognacs from Fine Champagne. With air, the oak and fruit integrate and expand, adding taut, exotic wood tones to the dried-fruit character. The palate opens with an absolutely perfect note of dark chocolate, followed by vibrant, juicy fruit that broadens beautifully through the mid-palate. The 90 proof is carried effortlessly, and a bold line of spice ties the exceptionally long finish together. Were we determined to nitpick, the only missing element might be the profound weight and density of truly old Grande Champagne. But I can point to only one producer capable of achieving that character without additives, and Dudognon needs more than 20 years and two or three times the price to get there. At this price, for as long as it lasts, this exceptional brandy surpasses everything else in the category for sheer value. It is affordable enough to throw around in a summer cocktail, yet deep and complex enough to pour contemplatively for several hours in front of the fire. There is simply no reason to buy another Cognac under $50 right now. The headlines may insist that no one is drinking Cognac, but I would argue that no one should be drinking anything but this. It is a tremendous deal by any measure. Load up while you can. I bought everything I could get my hands on, but opportunities like this have a habit of disappearing far faster than anyone expects.

Delamain Pale & Dry XO Grande Champagne Cognac (700ml)

95WE

Delamain’s youngest offering, at 20 to 25 years old, is also one of the standard-bearers of Grande Champagne (the blend was created in the 1920s and hasn’t changed). Light amber, with a delightful nose full of pear, marmalade, quince and orange blossom. The pear and quince carry onto the palate, where a distinctive membrillo-like flavor emerges — a unique note I find in a number of Delamain expressions. There’s gentle spice and warm citrus on the palate, gliding to a long, delicate finish. The definition of elegance. (JW)

Pierre Ferrand 9 Year Old Limited Edition Cask Strength Single Cask Cognac (750ml)
2012 Pierre Ferrand 9 Year Old Limited Edition Cask Strength Single Cask Cognac (750ml)

Coming in at a staggering 136.6 proof, this is an absolute beast of a Cognac, and one that whiskey lovers will likely gravitate toward. Not just because of the strength, but because it delivers a broad range of whisky-like flavors that many Cognacs leave behind. Distilled in 2012 and bottled in 2021, it is robust, playful, and demands your full attention. The nose opens with fresh-roasted coffee beans, tiramisu, dried figs and apricots, plum molasses, and orange blossom honey, followed by hints of lychee and oak moss. The first sip is unapologetically bold, bringing leather, toffee, licorice, mushrooms, and a peppery spice. Water is very much this spirit’s friend. It softens the edges and reveals additional fruit and floral notes, along with deeper layers of roasted caramel and honey. The finish returns to coffee, dates, and plums, joined by cigar box and soft leather. This is not a shy spirit by any measure, and a bit of water is key to opening it up and revealing its beautiful layers.

Sazerac de Forge & Fils Cognac (750ml)
Sazerac de Forge & Fils Cognac (750ml)

Sazerac's history in Cognac dates back to the late 1700s. In the mid 1800s, it was one of the largest Cognac producers and available throughout the world. It is the brand for which the famous Sazerac cocktail was named and–of course–shares a name with its current owner: the Sazerac company, whose portfolio includes powerhouse brands like Buffalo Trace. This "Finest Original" bottling is a minimum of seven years old, with spirit in the blend dating back to the 1960s. It focuses on Colombard and Folle Blanche rather than the ubiquitous Ugni Blanc, staying true to its pre-phylloxera roots. The color is a beautiful lustrous gold and the nose is just as bright. Laden with sweet fruits, subtle floral tones, and a lithe oak backbone, it is inviting in the glass. The palate is rich and full with a very long finish. An excellent addition to any Cognac collection.

Deux Familles "XO" Small Batch Cognac (750ml)

Born from the union of two families—one rooted in U.S. spirits expertise, the other in generations of Cognac craftsmanship—Deux Familles represents a return to honest, small-batch tradition. Their XO is a testament to that ethos: a 10-cask batch blend of Ugni Blanc eaux-de-vie from Petite Champagne and Fins Bois, two regions prized for expressive aromas. Distilled in traditional Charentais pot stills, the Cognac matures first in red French oak before a final 15-month rest in larger barrels from the family’s paradise cellar. Bottled at 43.6% ABV, it opens with a warm bouquet of sultana, candied pear, and spice cake, deepening into toasted bread, vanilla, and cigar box. The palate delivers old port richness, candied citrus, and oak, finishing with hints of leather and dried fruit. A refined, story-driven Cognac—that tastes as good as it sounds.

Deux Familles brings transparency and integrity to Cognac with small-batch releases that honor generational savoir-faire. This Single Batch expression—aged in Madeira wine casks—is a bold reinterpretation of tradition. Blending Fins Bois and Bons Bois Cognacs aged 6–8 years, the spirit is first matured in red and new French oak, then finished in 225L Limousin oak barrels formerly used for sweet Madeira. Bottled at 48.0% ABV with no additives and non-chill-filtered, it’s a purist’s dream. Aromas of raisin, prune, toffee, and coconut precede a mineral freshness and a touch of rancio. The palate balances fruit and oak: ripe grape, dry plum, and a subtle vinous edge. A modern Cognac rooted in legacy, best enjoyed neat or over ice.

Jason Wilson writes in Vinous "Founded in 1905, Tesseron sold eaux-de-vie to the large Cognac houses for almost a century before deciding, in 2003, to release their own range. Now, they’re focused only on XO age and above. Each XO is labeled as a numbered lot, representing a specific blend from their reserve stocks. This is one of the few houses that still uses a significant percentage of Folle Blanche and Colombard, in addition to Ugni Blanc." (03/2019) F. Paul Pacult writes in Spirits Journal "Eye-catching topaz/honey color; dazzling purity. The opening smells include pears, apples, and soda water; additional air contact releases delicate, fruity scents of banana in brandy, cotton candy, maple, and new oak. The palate entry is light, sweet, and grapy ripe; the midpalate is chewier in texture, more honeyed in taste than the entry phase and tropical fruit-like. Finishes satiny smooth, sugary/piney sweet, and medium-long. Nice job."
