Notes
Château de Beaulon is one of those rare Cognac estates where the entire story remains rooted in one historic property. The château dates to 1480, and since Christian Thomas acquired it in 1965 the family has restored the estate while expanding and improving its vineyards. Today Beaulon farms 94 hectares of chalky hillsides and remains devoted to traditional varieties that have largely disappeared from modern Cognac. This VSOP is especially compelling: it is made entirely from Folle Blanche, one of the region's historic grapes and a variety prized for its vivid floral and fruit character. Beaulon grows the fruit on its own estate, then double distills the wine on light lees in four small copper pot stills before aging the eau-de-vie for seven years in small oak barrels in traditional stone cellars with beaten-earth floors. The property is also famous for its mysterious Fontaines Bleues, natural springs hidden in the wooded park whose remarkably vivid blue waters have become one of Beaulon's defining landmarks. Combined with the estate's careful, low-intervention approach in the vineyard, this is a rare opportunity to taste mature, estate-grown Folle Blanche Cognac from one of the region's most distinctive historic producers.
