Domaine Benoît Cantin Irancy "La Grande Côte"
2023 Domaine Benoît Cantin Irancy "La Grande Côte"

This is a red wine that transports you to your favorite bistro in Dijon or Paris. One with paper on the tables, wooden chairs, and mirrors on the walls, sipping a glass while awaiting your steak au poivre and a tangle of frites. It's immediately charming and totally irresistible. If you've ever wondered where Burgundy keeps its secrets, drive fifteen minutes south of Chablis and you'll find Irancy, a south-facing amphitheater of Kimmeridgian limestone with fewer than 200 hectares of vines and fewer than fifty growers, every one of them making red wine on soils the rest of the world associates with oysters and Chablis. The climate has done Irancy a favor the Côte d'Or might envy: the amphitheater now ripens Pinot comfortably most years, slopes once written off as too cool are being planted, and the village sailed through the 2016 and 2021 frosts that gutted the rest of Burgundy, so the wines have gone from lean and angular to genuinely delicious without losing their chalky northern minerality. The Cantins have been farming here for generations, and Benoît, who bottled his first solo vintage in 1994 with his father Bernard still at his side, works 16 hectares spread across ten of the village's lieux-dits. "La Grande Côte" is sourced from a steep slope that tumbles toward the Yonne River and faces south-southwest so the Pinot soaks up every hour of northern sun, making this cuvée is the fullest and most structured Irancy in Benoit's range. In 2023, vibrant and pure-fruited aromatics leap out of the glass, immediately calling you for a second sniff. Wild fresh berries and fresh violets on the palate all coil around a chalky, beautifully fresh core. Who knew Red Burgundy under $30 could be this compelling?

Quite a distinguished nose, I was thinking 1er Cru. Remarkably long finish. Drink from 2028-2032. Tasted Jun 2025.

A beautiful wine with pristine limey fruit, mineral notes, oysters and chalky fruit. Almost full-bodied on the palate, but the fullness is marked by tension and tautness. Really good density of flavors and acidity. A wine to contemplate, with severeness, density and purity. Three plots: one in the lower part (85 years old), one in the middle (35 years old) and one on the top (70 years old). 20% 500-liter barrels between 3-5 years old. Drink or hold.

Of the 1996 Verget Chablis Grand Cru "Bougros" , Wine Advocate writes: " Guffens' Chablis offerings continue to enthrall me. Guffens most stunning Chablis in 1996 is the Chablis Bougros, a testimony to the greatness of the vintage and to his brilliant winemaking. It exhibits sublime lemon, mineral, flower, and wet stone aromatics as well as a feminine, silky, refined, classy, and medium-to-full-bodied personality. Raspberries, currants, roses, flint, and flavors reminiscent of a massive bouquet of freshly cut spring flowers are found in this complex and detailed beauty. Guffens put it best, 'I decided to throw away the Chardonnay and keep the flowers.' I suggest cellaring this gem until 2003 at the earliest, and drinking it over the subsequent 12 years. Here the expressive nose mixes primarily floral notes with hints of citrus, pear, sea breeze and quinine along with a nuance of exotic fruit. There is a relatively soft, indeed even tender mouth feel to the lightly mineral-inflected medium weight flavors that display a touch of salinity on the delicious if slightly warm finish. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2008 Domaine Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru "Montée de Tonnerre" (96VN, 94BH, (93-94RP), 93JG). Vinous: "Bright yellow with a green tinge. Classic Montée de Tonnerre aromas of lemon ice, crushed rock, iodiney minerality and white flowers. floral, lemon ice, straight and classic. Tactile, juicy and utterly gripping--in fact still almost painful today. Powerful salty minerality and penetrating acidity currently dominate the wine's lemon oil, grapefruit and floral flavors, with the wine showing a weightless impression. The dusty mineral-driven finish stains the palate and builds inexorably... Drink the 2010 for lunch now but hold this magical wine for another couple years, as its spring is still tightly coiled. This was my favorite wine of the tasting. The 2014 and 2010 vintages may be richer and deeper, as Isabelle Raveneau suggested to me three years ago, but this '08 is utterly classic. (ST)" (08/2019)

Domaine Seguinot Bordet Chablis Vieilles Vignes
2025 Domaine Seguinot Bordet Chablis Vieilles Vignes

Domaine Séguinot-Bordet ranks among the oldest family estates in Chablis, with documented roots in Maligny dating to 1590. Today, Jean-François Bordet oversees a 16-hectare domaine on the right bank of the Serein, where many vineyard parcels enjoy prime south and southeast exposures on classic Kimmeridgian soils. The estate remains firmly focused on Chardonnay, producing a range from Petit Chablis through Premier Cru and Grand Cru bottlings. Vineyard work emphasizes careful stewardship of the land, including massal selections and environmentally conscious farming. In the cellar, Bordet favors stainless steel, employing distinctive horizontal tanks that increase lees contact while preserving the purity, energy, and mineral precision that define traditional Chablis. The resulting wines have earned a reputation for clarity, balance, and a transparent expression of site, making Séguinot-Bordet one of the region’s enduring benchmarks.

Moderate intensity, tight at first, this Valmur requires a few minutes to find its groove, delivering stem ginger-tinged citric peel with a slightly oiliness towards the finish that is surprising given the growing season. Around 1.8ha are located on the mid-slopes of Chapelot. with 1.2ha at higher altitude in Pied d'Aloup which adds additional freshness and vivacity.k (AH)

Domaine Daniel-Etienne Defaix Chablis 1er Cru "Vaillons"
2016 Domaine Daniel-Etienne Defaix Chablis 1er Cru "Vaillons"

Chablis isn't a wine people typically have much patience to let lie. We buy it young, we drink it cold, and we love every ounce of it! The Defaix family runs the counterargumen to thist: even their "entry" wine, spends thirty months resting before they'll release it, which is longer than most premier cru Chablis gets anywhere else. The vines are 45 to 70 years old, dug into the Kimmeridgian limestone that makes Chablis, well, Chablis. An ancient seabed of fossilized oyster shells that add exceptional concentration for a village wine, classic gunflint, and a long, mineral-soaked finish that keeps you reaching for another glass.

A stunning nose, a little wrapping of seaweed around the stones. Perfectly balanced, then just when you are enjoying the subtlety, you sense the huge block of central white fruit as well. Only a little bit spicy, in fact even quite juicy at the finish. A long-term keeper, potentially a magnificent Preuses. The texture of a silk cravat suggests Didier Seguier. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted Jun 2024.

The Vaulorent from Fèvre is more mineral than its Montée de Tonnerre, if a bit less lush, with aromas of lime peel, mirabelle plum, and passion fruit. The texture is chiselled and concentrated, with layers of tightly wound extract and a dense, chalky finish. The grapes are from 3.6ha in Vaulorent, which is part of Fourchaume but located on the side of the grands crus. Winemaker Didier Séguier chooses his favourite blocks for this bottling and crafts a 'classic' Fourchaume from the rest. Fermentation is done in older casks for 40-50% of the grapes.(CC)

Domaine Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru "Vaillons"
1996 Domaine Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru "Vaillons"

Bid on this bottle of 1996 Domaine Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru "Vaillons" ((90-93RP)). Wine Advocate: "The smoke and charred oak scented Chablis Vaillons possesses unreal definition of tangy, flinty, and minerally flavors in its medium-to-full-bodied, and crisp personality. Powerful, strident and superbly-balanced, it needs to be cellared until at least 2003, and will easily hold its peak through 2009. The rating, with the range of scores in parentheses, indicates the wine was tasted from cask, not bottle. (PR)" (02/1998)

Domaine Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru "Montée de Tonnerre"
2002 Domaine Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru "Montée de Tonnerre"

Bid on this bottle of 2002 Domaine Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru "Montée de Tonnerre" (94BH, 94VN, 93ST, 92JM, (90-91RP)). Vinous: "Healthy bright yellow. Classic brothy, crushed-stone Chablis nose, with lively hints of ripe citrus fruits and flowers. Wonderfully dense and tactile yet weightless, showing a sexy creaminess in the mid-palate for such a mineral-driven wine. An element of candied yellow fruits emerged with air, with a repeating floral note providing lift. Beautifully balanced, vibrant and long, finishing tactile and classically dry but not at all austere. A bit like the 2010 in style. (ST)" (04/2019)
