Bordeaux

Bordeaux

We're extremely focused on Bordeaux - several staff members fly over to the region on multiple trips each year to taste new vintages from barrel and older vintages from bottle. K&L also enjoys excellent relationships with negociants and châteaux, and over the years we've established outstanding allocations on the top wines. It hasn't hurt that one of K&L's owners is a complete Bordeaux fanatic and our main buyer. The top red wines are typically blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc and the white are primarily Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, though the blends vary substantially depending on which part of the region you're talking about. Within Bordeaux you'll also find the sweet wines of Sauternes. Interested in great Bordeaux? Look no further...

2016 Kalinda Médoc Bordeaux Red
Top Pick!
Our Kalinda private label hooks you up with awesome wine at a fraction of what you'd otherwise pay for this exact same wine under its normal label. A great value here on a spicy, lively, vibrant wine. This is a lovely blend of dark fruits with black plum boysenberry and cassis complemented by hints of sweet tobacco, vanilla, cocoa and baking spice. Certainly a decent amount of oak is employed here, but it’s nicely integrated with the fruit character. All the components of the wine are already in harmony and it has a pleasant round weight on the palate. I...

2009 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac
Top Pick!
100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An amazing wine in every sense, this classic, full-bodied Pauillac is the quintessential Pontet Canet from proprietor Alfred Tesseron, who continues to reduce yields and farms his vineyards biodynamically – a rarity in Bordeaux. Black as a moonless night, the 2009 Pontet Canet offers up notes of incense, graphite, smoke, licorice, creme de cassis and blackberries. A wine of irrefutable purity, laser-like precision, colossal weight and richness, and sensational freshness, this is a tour de force in winemaking tha...

2016 Léoville-Barton, St-Julien
Top Pick!
97 points James Suckling: "Terrific intensity of dark berries, almost peppery blackcurrants and violets with attractive and integrated, spicy oak and an earthy edge. The palate has a super powerful and long, linear core with plenty of fruit flesh strapped in tight for a long and thrilling ride into the finish." (02/2019) 97 points Wine Spectator: "This is so vivid as it brims with pastis-soaked plum, blackberry, black currant and blueberry paste flavors, all carried by a perfectly integrated brambly spine. Tar and ganache notes give the finish an extra...

2010 Smith-Haut-Lafitte, Pessac-Léognan (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Top Pick!
98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is an extraordinary performance once again from the Cathiard family, the proprietors of Smith-Haut-Lafitte. They think the 2010 is even better than the 2009. (I disagree, but only slightly.) This wine has laser-like definition in its an remarkable nose of a subtle charcoal fire interwoven with spring flowers, creme de cassis, blueberry liqueur and spicy wood. Full-bodied, stunningly concentrated, long, rich and moderately tannic, this wine is set for an exceptionally long life of 30-40 years but can be drunk...

2015 Margaux, Margaux
Back In Stock!
Top Pick!
100 points Decanter: "Château Margaux's grand vin accounts for 35% of production in this vintage. It stood out as a potential wine of the vintage during en primeur and it is more than living up to its promise. The concentration is stunning, with a fruit structure that is darker, tighter and more insistent than Pavillon. It's so fresh, there is an opulence here, a dense silkiness to the tannins that is fleshed out across the palate, building to a big finish with menthol freshness. This is classically-styled Margaux with aromatic acrobatics and tannins so ...

Jancis Robinson: "90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon from Lugasson, property of the Bellanger family. 30-year-old vines yielding 50 hl/ha. Two-thirds aged in barrel for 12 months. Clean and direct. With fairly pronounced tannins still. I'm not sure I agree with the Bellangers that this has 12 years' ageing potential but it's certainly a very good effort for the price. 16/20" (11/2019) Wine Enthusiast: "Still young and full of bright fruit, this is a juicy wine with acidity and red-fruit flavors. Its vibrant character is lively although it does need ti...

2018 Jouanin, Cotes de Castillon
Top Pick!
Thank the emerging region of Cotes de Castillon for this spectacular deal in red Bordeaux. This cuvee shares many qualities of top-flight St-Emilion, with a great sweetness of fruit along with vanilla and spicy notes from new oak. Everyone who loves wine knows, it is hard to find a steal in Bordeaux these days, but this wine offers a lot of wine for the money.

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Sansonnet needs some coaxing to reveal notions of warm blueberries, plum preserves and boysenberries followed by Chinese five spice, licorice, fertile loam and charcuterie with a waft of lavender. Full-bodied, the palate is packed with layered black and blue fruits, framed by ripe, velvety tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long and with great purity. 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A top-notch effort from proprietress Helene Garcin, Haut-Bergey’s 2004 exhibits an evolved, cedary, smoky, tobacco, and sweet cherry-scented bouquet offered in a medium-bodied, supple-textured style. (RP)" (06/2007) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Red-ruby. Sexy, rather wild aromas of roasted raspberry and game. Supple but firm-edged, with good grip to the raspberry and mineral flavors. There's good fruit here but limited fat and a restrained sweetness. (ST)" (06/2007)

97 points James Suckling: "Porcini mushrooms, with dark and ripe fruits. Turns to licorice and violets. Full body, with round and soft tannins and a long delicious finish. The texture is gorgeous. So much going on in the glass. Try after 2018." (02/2012) 96 points Wine Spectator: "This is well-cloaked for now in roasted vanilla and espresso notes, but there’s ample, fleshy fig sauce and mulled blackberry fruit in reserve. The finish sports a long, melted licorice snap feel. Dense, but beautifully polished and pure. For the cellar. Best from 2015 throug...

2016 Malescasse, Haut-Médoc
Top Pick!
92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "From vines located between Margaux and Saint-Julien, the 2016 Château Malescasse is a winner and a solid step up over the 2015. Saturated ruby/purple-colored with a smoking good bouquet of blackberries, saddle leather, dried herbs, and lead pencil, this beauty hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a rounded, sexy texture, and a serious finish. Hats off to this estate and the consulting team of Stéphane Derenoncourt for this stunning effort. Drink it any time over the coming 15+ years." (02/2019) 92 points James Su...

A blend of 51% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Petit Verdot. " (01/2019) 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Owned by the Cruse family, one of the big names in Bordeaux wine, this estate has produced a well-structured, balanced wine. 91 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Showing a beautiful limestone minerality and focus, the 2016 Château d'Arce offers a terrific perfume of savory red and black fruits, dried herbs, flowers, and loamy soil. With medium to full body, notable tannins, and terrific purity, it has rock solid depth and richness on the palate and is going to benefit from short term cellaring but keep for a decade." " (01/2019) Wine Enthusiast: "Fruit and tannins come together well in this ripe wine. Its structure will allow it to age while the berry flavors bring a fresh edge. Juicy and fruity, it has fine potential. 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The spectacular 2003 Pontet Canet is still incredibly young and vigorous. This full-bodied classic boasts a dense purple color as well as a superb nose of graphite, creme de cassis, forest floor, licorice and a hint of truffles, low acidity, and extravagant richness. Most of the tannins have been resolved in this superstar of the vintage. It should continue to drink well for 10-15+ years. Price: $199.99

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I have noticed serious bottle variation with this wine, but recently it has been consistently scoring in the 94-96 point range. Beautifully sweet, slightly herbaceous black currant, licorice, and earthy notes emerge from this nearly opaque, dark ruby/purple-tinged 1982. Compared to the more elegant, feminine-styled wine often produced here, it is a beast. Dense, thick, rich, concentrated, and impressive, it can be drunk now and over the next two decades. (RP)" (06/2009)

95 points James Suckling: "A very elegant and polished Margaux with great structure and an attractive touch of herbal freshness, then a delicate touch of sweetness at the long, fine finish." (02/2019) 94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "From an estate on the uptick and showing beautifully on two separate occasions, the 2016 Château Labégorce is a head-turner of a Margaux that’s based on 52% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot that was brought up in 45% new oak, with the balance in once-used barrels. Sexy notes of blackcurra...

1981 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac
Top Pick!
92 points John Gilman: "The 1981 vintage of Pichon-Lalande continues to just cruise along in its plateau of maturity and is drinking beautifully, as it has been doing already for a couple of decades! At our vertical tasting this really showed well, offering up a middleweight and intensely flavored format and lovely complexity on both the nose and palate. The bouquet is a refined blend of cassis, black cherries, cigar smoke, a touch of toffee, gravelly soil tones, tobacco leaf, menthol and a deft touch of new wood. On the palate the wine is medium-full, p...

2008 Pavie-Decesse, St-Emilion

94 points James Suckling: "Lovely fruit with chocolate and berries and raspberries. Full and round fine silky and elegant. Very fresh and long. Beautiful. I like the freshness." (12/2010) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Another top-notch effort, the 2008 is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc produced from yields of 30 hectoliters per hectare. It reached 14% natural alcohol, no doubt because of the extremely late harvest. A deep purple color is accompanied by massive notes of blackberries, incense, fruitcake, camphor and toasty oak i...

2009 d'Yquem, Sauternes
Top Pick!
100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Pale to medium gold colored, the 2009 d'Yquem bursts from the glass with gregarious crème caramel, allspice, dried apricots, mandarin peel and pineapple upside down cake scents plus a fragrant undercurrent of fungi, acacia honey, candied ginger, musk perfume and frangipani. Full-bodied and full-on hedonic in the mouth, the rich, tightly wound layers are still amazingly youthful with bags of citrus sparks and an incredibly long, perfumed finish. Possessing a residual sugar of 157 grams per liter and 13.6% alcohol...

2009 Les Pagodes de Cos, St-Estèphe (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Top Pick!
94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2009 Pagodes De Cos is a blockbuster that I wish I had more of in the cellar. A blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest mostly Merlot (there’s a small amount of Petit Verdot) brought up in roughly 50% new French oak, its deep purple/plum color is followed by a smorgasbord of black raspberry and kirsch like fruits, spice box, dried flowers and licorice. With a huge mid-palate, sweet, sweet tannin, beautiful purity of fruit, and a great finish, it’s an incredibly sexy, satisfying second wine that will keep for another 10-15...

Full and nice texture on the palate with charming fruit and fine tannins. Enjoyable finish with medium length and a tasty licorice note. Drink from 2016." (06/2013) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at Château Rauzan-Gassies. The 2010 Bel-Orme Tronquoy de Lalande has a superior bouquet to the 2009, a little more fruit intensity and focus, dusky blackberry, scorched earth with a touch of leather. The palate is medium-bodied...

2016 Barde-Haut, St-Emilion
Top Pick!
96 points Vinous: "Readers will find a rich, flamboyant wine in the 2016 Barde-Haut. There is not a ton of subtlety here, but I am not sure that matters all that much given how immensely pleasing the 2016 is. Crushed rocks, graphite, lavender, blackberry, plum, and violet infuse a Saint-Émilion that offers tremendous textural richness as well as vibrancy. Most importantly of all, the 2016 is flat-out delicious. This is a decidedly opulent, dark Saint-Émilion with all of the elements impeccably balanced. I loved it. 2016 Figeac, St-Emilion
Top Pick!
100 points Vinous: "The 2016 Figeac was bottled at the end of July 2018, since Frédéric Faye wanted to give the wine more time in barrel to develop more harmony. The stunning 24-carat bouquet rivets you to the spot with brilliant delineation and mineral-rich red fruit that articulates its terroir as well as any Right Bank you will find. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannin, perfect acidity, wonderfully integrated new oak and enormous depth toward the fresh, pencil-box- and cedar-infused finish. This is a classic Figeac, up there with the 1947 a...

2009 Léoville-Barton, St-Julien
Back In Stock!
98 points Wine Enthusiast: "A major success of the vintage. The wine exhibits extreme richness of the fruit, with all its sweet blackberry flavors. It also has underlying firm structure, density and solid tannins. Bring in the acidity at the end, and this is both impressive and ready for long-term aging. *#3 on Wine Enthusiast's Top 100 Cellar Selections of 2012* (RV)" (02/2012) 96 points Decanter: "This stands out above its sibling estate by some distance in this vintage - in fact I would say that the closing of the gap between Léoville and Langoa has...

Wine Spectator: "Still holding on. Medium brick-red, with an amber edge. Some decent tobacco, mushroom flavors but slightly funky, with velvety dry tannins. (JS)" (11/1998) K&L Notes: Over the years Ch. Lanessan has gained quite a following here at K&L for offering exceptional Bordeaux values. The legendary 1982 vintage in Bordeaux remains a solid 95 points in Wine Spectator's vintage charts: "Intense ripe fruit and generous in style; plenty of round tannins."

From proprietors Sylvère and Valérie Coquereau: "The history is that of our meeting, our love at first sight for a small property, leaned against its hillside of the “Première Côtes”, rich of its fifty years vines, proud of its varied and complex land, recognized in the past but then asleep … facing the sun! Everything is there and everything is said … But everything remains to be done … Every day we observe, discover, learn, try and start over again. Jancis Robinson: "45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, 8% Petit Verdot. Very small vintage (20-25% of the usual crop) due to the hard frost 21 Apr. Serious frost damage to new shoots. Slightly bricky rim but garnet core. Fresh and cedary but less fragrant than the 1996. A little sappy and nutty. Touch of undergrowth on the nose and comes through more on the palate. Dry, fine tannins, fully resolved and sweet. Some sweetness of undergrowth and red fruit. Just enough fruit to be in balance now but I wouldn't keep it much longer. Good fo...

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2012 Château d’Issan, builds on the richness of the second wine and adds more body, structure and density. It has an inky purple color and a stunning nose of spring flowers, blueberry and blackberry fruit as well as touches of incense and graphite. Medium to full-bodied and stunningly concentrated, this 2012 is a great success in the vintage, one of the superstars. Moreover, its precociousness suggests it could be drunk in the next 4-5 years or cellared through 2025. I underrated this wine dramatically in my ...

96 points James Suckling: "This has a rich and ripe dark-fruit nose with a wealth of stony attraction and a lighter, floral edge. The palate has a very rich core of deeply ripe, fleshy fruit, framed in cedary oak. Really impressive clarity and web-like tannins. Superb finish. " (01/2019) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Tour Saint-Christophe is made up of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. As with the 2009, it has incredible depth of fruit, yet a slightly more focused, classic style, which is very much in the style of the 2010 vintage. Wine Enthusiast: "Owned by the Borie family of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou in Saint-Julien, this more humble member of the family has produced a well-structured and already well-integrated wine. Its tannins are still firm and need time to soften. (RV)" (04/2019)

1983 Gruaud-Larose, St-Julien
Top Pick!
93 points Vinous: "Bright medium red with an amber edge. Archetypal mature Gruaud-Larose aromas of truffle, smoked beef, earth, cedar, and tobacco complicate red cherry on the expressive. Fresh and juicy in the mouth, with a graceful quality to the red cherry, spicecake, orange rind and aromatic herb flavors. The finish is bright, long and clean, showing subtle underbrush notes at the back. I have always felt the 1983 Gruaud to be a success but bottles I've had in the past have been marked by gamey, animal aromas and dry, earthy flavors. Not this time: I...

It’s just a brilliant wine, one that will age effortlessly from here, and is still not quite ready to give up its secrets. It’s concentrated and confident and hard not to fall in love with. The nose is deep, ripe and sappy, as it offers up scents of black cherries, cassis, a touch of eucalyptus, smoke, nutskins, a beautiful base of soil, cigar wrappers and a floral topnote redolent of violets. 2010 Pape Clément, Pessac-Léognan
Top Pick!
100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I certainly underrated the 2010 Pape Clement from barrel, rating it only 93-95+. (Thank God I put a 'plus' there!) Having tasted it four times in Bordeaux, and rating it perfect three times and 99 the fourth time, this final blend of 51% Merlot, 47.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 1.5% Petit Verdot is perfection in a bottle. Tipping the scales at 14.5% natural alcohol, there are 8,000 cases of it. Based on 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot that spent 14 months in 45% new oak, its deep purple/plum color is followed by a complex, medium to full-bodied, seamless Margaux that has complexity as well as depth and richness.
