A blend of 99% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc, the 2020 Laroque is deep garnet-purple in color. A little subdued to begin, offering subtle notes of crushed rocks and damp soil, it opens out to a core of ripe black and red plums and fresh blackberries, plus a fragrant waft of lilacs. The full-bodied palate is bursting with taut, muscular black fruits and amazing tension, framed by ripe, rounded tannins, and finishing with great length and depth. (LPB)

This vintage seems to combine aspects of the 2018 with the 2019, and with the lowest pH since the 2016 vintage. It exudes violets, rich black (but also cool blue) fruit, cherry and an unmistakably appealing expression of wet stone. By this vintage, 70% of the wine had been aged in grand formats of oak, yielding fruit purity. The sizes of the oak aging vessels vary. Some are 500 litres; others 3,000 and even 9,000. The wine has a certain iron rich aspect but communicates airy elegance and richness. Long finish indeed! (PK)

The 2020 Laroque is even better than the en primeur sample. Dark and enveloping, with tons of class, Laroque is a winner. Succulent dark plum, gravel, spice, menthol, licorice and pipe tobacco give the 2020 tons of nuance. Laroque is class personified. Winemaker David Suire is doing important work here. (AG)

There is such incredible balance to this wine, with deftly expressed black and blue fruits, espresso, liqourice and cocoa bean shavings, all delivered slowly but surely through the palate, held in by sculpted tannins, and wet stone texture. This is my biggest upscore from En Primeur - I noted at the time that it was extremely closed, but it is now showing its incredible potential, and is a great value wine.

Laroque is one of the most exciting properties in Bordeaux, and still the first place I look when considering top‑tier value in the region. Since David Suire took over in 2015—bringing the same precision and terroir‑first philosophy he now applies at Larcis Ducasse—the estate has been on a remarkable ascent, crafting wines with striking texture, depth, and an elegance and freshness that feel almost improbable at this price point. The critical acclaim may be enthusiastic, but it’s entirely earned. Ultimately, though, what matters is what’s in the glass, and this 2020—one of the great modern Right Bank vintages—shows exactly why Laroque has shifted from an insider’s secret to a must‑have reference point for value‑driven collectors. Bright, pure fruit, seamless texture, incredibly fine tannins, and that unmistakable limestone signature all come together in a wine that feels both complete and effortless. It’s already a pleasure to drink, yet it has the balance and precision to reward patience for many years to come.

The 2020 Château Laroque opens with a vibrant cherry-driven nose, that is very inviting. On the palate, it delivers dark fruit flavors of black cherry and plum, layered with mineral undertones and a subtle spice that adds depth and complexity. The wine is full-bodied, with a firm yet polished structure. That being said the wine is not too heavy, feeling fairly fresh despite the richness. While you could drink this now happily, as with most Bordeaux's I believe that giving a few years of rest will definitely help this wine bring out more of its potential.
