A huge success in the vintage is the 2015 Château Suduiraut and this gem goes a long way towards showing how successful the sweet wines were in 2015. Offering a massive array of orange peel, honey, marmalade, flowers, and toasted nuts, this incredible wine hits the palate with a thunderous display of opulence, richness, and length, all while staying fresh, elegant, and seamless. It has a huge mid-palate and is reminiscent of the 2003, only with more freshness and delineation.

Bid on this 2-half-bottle lot of 1989 d'Yquem, Sauternes (375ml) (100JA, 99RP, 97DC, 97ST, 97VN, 97WS). Jane Anson: This took home the audience award at the 67 Pall Mall tasting that I was hosting, with good reason. What a brilliant example of why Sauternes should be left to gather nuance and to shed its more exuberant, fattier early years before opening. This is just a masterclass in the layers and complexity that you find in fully mature Yquem; saffron, truffle, pineapple, quince, lime, apricots and lemon. Hugely persistent with a squeeze of scraping slate acidity through the final few minutes that gives a dry but mouthwatering finish. It is clearly in its tertiary phase in terms of the type of aromatics, and the beautiful amber, rose-gold colour, but there is no sense that it is beginning to run out of steam. A concentrated, gloriously balanced Yquem that has decades ahead of it, and fully justifies the reputation of the vintage... (01/2021)

One of the highlights of the vintage, the 2023 Coutet is exquisite, revealing aromas of pear, white peach, beeswax, pineapple and ripe apricot intertwined with spices and flowers. Medium- to full-bodied, dense and concentrated yet without heaviness, it is fleshy and generous, built around an enveloping, vibrant core of fruit framed by racy acidity that extends into an endless, ethereal finish. Marrying the inherent vivacity of Barsac’s limestone terroirs with the concentration of the year, this ranks among my favorite renditions and may well be one of the finest wines produced here in recent times. The 2023 Suduiraut is a model of modern Sauternes. Orange peel, burnt sugar, crème-brûlée, tangerine peel, and wild flowers inform a Sauternes of total finesse and silkiness. Yields were a measly 12 hectoliters per hectare. The 150 grams of residual sugar are not especially evident. Everything about the 2023 is perfectly judged. It can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring or cellared for decades. The 2023 is a timeless wine that is among the most notable successes of the year. (AG)

Coutet, Barsac
1971 Coutet, Barsac

Bid on this bottle of 1971 Coutet, Barsac (96VN). Vinous: "The 1971 Coutet is a Barsac that I have drunk several times but to be frank, I cannot remember one as sensational as this. Funnily enough, the last time I had this was back in October 2010 for Jasper Morris’s book launch and the same man is sharing this bottle eight years later. Refulgent golden in colour it has an explosive bouquet with vivacious scents of quince, blood orange, Manuka honey and just that hint of petrol. There are few Sauternes of this age that match the vigour of this and that comes through on the palate: viscous in texture, a killer line of acidity that slices effortlessly through the honeyed fruit with fabulous tension on the rich, slightly Germanic finish. I would love to rack this up against the 1971 Yquem so they can fight it out for best Bordeaux of the vintage! (NM)" (07/2018)

1986 Lafaurie-Peyraguey, Sauternes

Bid on this 5-bottle lot of 1986 Lafaurie-Peyraguey, Sauternes (94JG, 91JS). John Gilman: "In the US market, this was the first vintage of Lafaurie-Peyraguey that really caught the imagination of Bordeaux lovers and it was very widely distributed. Consequently, along with the 1988 vintage, the 1986 is the wine from this estate that I have had the most opportunities to enjoy and it continues to drink beautifully at age thirty. The bouquet is deep, pure and quite elegant in its expression of toasted coconut, pineapple, chalky soil tones, honey, orange peel and a deft framing of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, crisp and complex, with a good core, bright, zesty acids and a fine finish that remains light on its feet and vibrant. " (01/2018)

Bid on this 1-half-bottle lot of 1999 d'Yquem, Sauternes (375ml) (97DC, 96TWI, 93JG, 92RP). Decanter: The intensity of the rich, heady melange of apricots, orange pith, ginger and mango flavours is profound, but the balance of all the elements and its luscious crème brûlée texture is what makes you swoon. It’s complex, savoury, rich, intense, long and elegant. The 1999 vintage was classified as difficult, with rain in September and October, but the fruit retained fabulous acidity that perfectly balances the extraordinary residual sugar of 128.2g per litre into dreamy, harmonious meld. The 2010 Château d’Yquem is an utterly stunning young wine and a very worthy follow-up to the magical wine produced at this estate in 2009. The bouquet is deep, complex and flat out brilliant, as it soars from the glass in a celestial mélange of pineapple, tangerines, a touch of passion fruit, honeycomb, beautifully complex and chalky soil tones, spring flowers and a very gentle touch of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, suave and utterly seamless, with great mid-palate depth, bright acids and surreal length and grip on the dancing and very intensely flavored finish. The 2010 d’Yquem is not quite as ethereally complex at this stage as the hauntingly beautiful 2009, but in terms of sheer quality, it seems likely to be every bit as profound. 98+

Leogate "Brokenback Vineyard" Semillon Hunter Valley New South Wales
2021 Leogate "Brokenback Vineyard" Semillon Hunter Valley New South Wales

Located at the foot of the Brokenback Ranges in Australia’s oldest wine-producing region, the Hunter Valley, Leogate Estate was first planted in the 1970s by “one of the founding fathers of the modern Australian wine industry”, Len Evans AO OBE. Current custodians Bill and Vicki Widin bought the original 50-hectare Brokenback Vineyard in 2008. They have used their own knowledge and experience on the land, along with the expertise of others such as senior winemaker Mark Woods, to reinvigorate the property. The Brokenback Semillon is harvested early, so the final ABV is a mere 11.5% and the acid structure is vibrant and lively now as a young wine, but will soften and gain complexity with age.

Bid on this 5-bottle lot of 2000 d'Yquem, Sauternes (96DC). Decanter: "Things were more difficult in Sauternes than in the rest of Bordeaux in the 2000 vintage, with a brilliant first picking in early October that showed all the promise of the vintage, but with the later crop ruined by heavy rain. In the end Yquem made 20% of its usual yield, but the success of the earlier growing season comes through with luxuriously concentrated apricot and marmalade flavours, laced with bitter orange, lime zest, butterscotch, saffron and white truffles. 128g/l of residual sugar, with total acidity of 4.5. The team behind this wine included current winemaking director Sandrine Garbay, who had begun two years earlier in 1998, with the château already partly owned by Bernard Arnault of LVMH (he bought his first shares in 1996) but still headed up by director Alexandre de Lur Saluces, whose family had been at Yquem since 1875. Of the 1983 Rieussec, Sauternes (375ml), Wine Spectator writes: "Nectar-like if a bit on the sweet side, impressively complex, concentrated and focused. Deep gold, big, sweet and rich, with gobs of concentrated fig, brown sugar, butterscotch and oak flavor. A knockout. *Top 100 Wine of 1988*" (01/1988)

A blend of two ferments, one larger ferment in concrete tulip with 10% whole berries and 10% whole bunches and a second on full skins (40% whole bunches) in stainless steel. It's then blended, full skins making up 10% of the final wine. Yellow fruited with plum, apple, citrus and a touch of pear, hints of soft, souk-like spice, clotted cream, apple and pear skin, grapefruit pith and stone. Slinky and supple with a textural flow, stony acid drive and long, lemon drop finish. Delicious, textural drinking. (DB)

Another sensational white, the 2024 Château Suduiraut Pur Sémillon reveals ripe citrus, crushed lime, mint, and chalky minerality on the nose, and it's medium-bodied on the palate, with a pure, graceful, focused mouthfeel, solid mid-palate depth, and integrated acidity. It plays in the fresher style of the vintage yet brings depth and length. Drink this beauty over the coming two decades. Drink 2026-2045.

Lively and bright, such intensity of sharp lemon and lime at the beginning, straight but forward and so expressive. Crunchy and crisp, so charming and enjoyable with lift and length and the most lovely saline, mineral aspects towards the finish giving different nuance and complexity. Feels really well made, if only they made more of this. A lovely bitter tang on the finish reminds you it's serious, one of the best whites with such sherbet juiciness, sharp, lively, intense - I love it! Focused and pure. Aged 8 months in oak. Harvest 18 August - 29 August. HVE certified. (GH)

Impressively balanced, with the fruit rich, intense with a golden glow. The acidity is as important as the freshness, giving a delicious lift to the core of dry, concentrated botrytis. Obviously a great wine for long-term aging in a great Sauternes year. (RV)
