Exuberantly aromatic with sweet black plums, forest berries and violets. Juicy and vinous, this has vivacious, refreshing acidity and succulent, seamless tannins. The two-thirds new oak offers light espresso tones. The panache is bewitching. This is equally intellectual and pleasurable. One of the wines of the vintage.

Bid on this magnum of 2003 Frederic Esmonin Ruchottes Chambertin Grand Cru (1.5L) (94WS). Wine Spectator: "Very smoky in aroma, with a spicy note accenting the core flavors of wild cherry and kirsch. It shows a lot of finesse and a mineral element as it builds intensity across the palate. Good length, with a hint of tobacco. Best from 2009 through 2025. 60 cases imported. (BS)" (05/2006)

Bid on this 3-bottle tasting lot; including 2-bottles of 1988 Philippe Leclerc Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Les Cazetiers" (95RP) and 1-bottle of 1991 Philippe Leclerc Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "La Combe Aux Moines" (92RP). Of the 1988 Philippe Leclerc Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Les Cazetiers", Wine Advocate writes: "The Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers was on par with the great wines from the Domaine de la Romanee-Conti. The fabulously exotic, rich, multidimensional bouquet was followed by gorgeous layers of extract, layer upon layer of smoky, herb-tinged fruit flavors, soft tannins, a full body, and a finish that must last several minutes. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2017 Méo-Camuzet Frère et Soeurs Gevrey-Chambertin (90JG). John Gilman: " I really enjoyed the 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin from Domaine Méo-Camuzet this year, as this is an archetypical synthesis of the village and the vintage. The wine is deep and nicely sappy on the nose, delivering a lovely blend of red and black cherries, chocolate, a touch of meatiness, woodsmoke, a fine base of soil tones and just a hint of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, focused and very nicely structured, with a very good core of fruit, lovely focus and grip and impressive backend energy on the long and complex finish. This is a first class villages this year. 90+" (12/2018)

Bid on this bottle of 1990 Serafin Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes. Wine Advocate: "Many people in Burgundy believe Serafin is producing the finest wines in Gevrey-Chambertin. He continues to lower his yields, and while he never did much filtering, in 1990 he decided to eliminate it. His 1990s are all concentrated, backward, dense wines that will require some patience. The Gevrey-Chambertin actually comes from the premier cru vineyard Les Corbeaux, but he did not register his holdings in time for the name to appear on the label. In 1991 the words Les Corbeaux will be included in the wine's name. The softest wine of his 1990 offerings, this dark-colored wine exhibits a sweet perfume of black fruits and damp earth. In the mouth, it is medium-bodied, with gorgeous fruit extraction, soft tannins, and a moderately long, round finish. (RP)" (10/1992)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2010 Lucien Le Moine Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru "Les Amoureuses" ((94-97ST), (93-95BH), (92-94RP)). Int'l Wine Cellar: "Good red-ruby. Knockout nose melds dark berries, violet, rose petal and crushed stone. Dense, taut and brilliantly delineated; an essence of pinot noir, with wonderfully aromatic, intense flavors of tangy dark berries, stone and smoky minerality. Perhaps most impressive today on the pungent, slowly building back end, which delivers uncanny spicy grip and leaves the mouth drenched in floral perfume." (01/2012)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2009 Domaine Joseph Roty Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Très Vieilles Vignes (94BH, 94RP). Wine Advocate: "Good deep red. Very ripe aromas of cherries macerated in alcohol, mocha and wild herbs. Generous, pliant and highly concentrated, with lovely floral, mineral and minty high notes lifting the ripe cherry fruit. Finishes tactile, chewy and very long, with noble, sweet tannins and hints of game and menthol. These vines date back to 1885, but Philippe Roty is quick to point out that there has been a lot of repiquage (replanting of individual vines as they die) along the way. I would not be surprised if this wine merited a higher score 10 or 15 years down the road. (ST) 94+" (03/2010)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2013 Domaine Fourrier Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru "Vieille Vigne" (95JG, (92-94RP)). John Gilman: "The 2013 Latricières-Chambertin from Jean-Marie Fourrier is a brilliant example of this great terroir. The pure and classic bouquet delivers scents of dark berries, black cherries, raw cocoa, grilled meats, espresso, black soil tones, vanillin oak and a gently smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, complex and shows off outstanding mid-palate depth, with great soil signature, exemplary focus and grip, ripe tannins and a very, very long, soil-driven and complex finish. A great bottle of Latricières. 95+" (11/2014)

Bid on this 5-bottle lot of 2016 Domaine Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Clos des Issarts" ((93-95VN), (91-94JM), (90-92BH)). Vinous: "(destemmed): Good dark red. Captivating perfume of raspberry, spices, crushed stone and red licorice. Intensely flavored and penetrating, boasting terrific energy and lift to its flavors of red berries, minerals and flowers. Very concentrated and dense but conveys a weightless impression. The palate-saturating finish offers spectacular rising perfume. A wine from very stony soil: I'm sure I would have picked it blind as coming from Chambolle-Musigny. (ST)" (01/2018)

The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru, which was shown as a blend of foudre and barrel, really shows its class (as usual). It is blessed with much more delineation and mineralité than the Estournelles or Lavaux, soaring in the glass with vivacious red fruit and just a subtle flintiness in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. It does not quite possess the ambition of the 2022 and is perhaps a little stricter, but I adore the hoisin-tinged finish and sustained peppery aftertaste. There is class here, and this should age easily for 20 to 25 years. (NM)
Back when I was still a wine merchant specializing in Burgundy, the Champs-Chenys was always the single vineyard bottling of Gevrey that I bought for my own cellar from the Roty family. I do not necessarily think that it is the best of the now four different cuvées, but it was always my favorite. The 2023 version is again excellent, revealing a vibrant and complex nose of dark berries, black cherries, grilled meats, dark chocolate, a superb base of soil, just a whisper of Gevrey mustard seed, woodsmoke and cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and already quite suave on the attack, with an excellent core of fruit, ripe tannins, lovely soil signature and a long, seamlessly balanced and promising finish. (Drink between 2033-2065)
Bid on this bottle of 2008 Domaine Joseph Roty Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Les Fontenys" (93JG, (91-92RP), 92VN). John Gilman: "I often find that the premier cru of Fontenys can often be a bit dense and black fruity out of the blocks, but in the 2008 vintage the really beautiful soil characteristics of the vintage have produced by quite a wide margin the most transparent and refined young vintage of Roty Fontenys that I have ever had the pleasure to taste. The fantastic nose jumps from the glass in a blaze of red and black cherries, raw cocoa, grilled meat, mustard seed, a great base of soil tones and a deft touch of new wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and rock solid at the core, with a rather atypically suave attack, ripe tannins and lovely focus and balance on the very long, tangy and soil-driven finish..." I had always known that the vines in the Rotys’ parcel of Charmes-Chambertin were absolutely ancient, but I had no idea that this also applied to their vines in Mazy, which were planted in 1919! These one hundred and four year-old vines have produced a masterpiece in the 2023 vintage, delivering an aromatic constellation of black cherries, dark berries, cassis, grilled meats, that lovely touch of signature Mazy sweet vegetality (that I can never accurately describe), a complex base of dark soil tones, a hint of anise and plenty of smoky new oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, precise and bottomless in its depth of old vine fruit at the core, with great soil signature and grip, ripe, firm and perfectly integrated tannins and great balance on the very, very long and complex finish. A stunning young wine, but patience will be required! (Drink between 2040-2100)

The 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a mixture of red and black fruit, beautifully delineated, hints of blood orange and crushed stone percolating through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, perfectly judged acidity, slightly granular in texture towards the finish that displays commendable weight and length. Again, there is just the right sapidity on the finish. Superb.(NM)

A fine generous mid purple, with a much smoother and sensual bouquet, very stylish. Raspberry first then a swathe of strawberry fruit, powerful, generous and much smoother across the finish compared to Cazetiers, for example. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted Nov 2023.
A slightly darker ruby colour with an explosion of sensual fruit on the nose, even a very slight chocolate note. A fine redcurrant tension though refers back to the vintage, with a little crunch from the whole bunch. Or perhaps that comes from the terroir of Mazoyères, whence this wine issues.
Joyous as ever, this is ecstatically aromatic with rose petals, blueberries, lilacs and smoky spices. Layers of ripe red fruits pile onto the palate, focused by lacey tannins and some crunchy sea salt tang. Latricières certainly retained its freshness as the coolest Grand Cru in Gevrey, despite the hot vintage. The Drouhin-Laroze parcel measures 0.80 hectare, but about one-third has been pulled out for replanting.
There is always an extra element of both depth and length when one hops up to the premier cru Fontenys in the Roty cellars each year. The 2023 version is going to be an outstanding wine when it is ready to drink, as it offers up a deep and complex bouquet of black plums, sweet dark berries, grilled meats, plenty of smokiness, a beautiful foundation of dark soil tones and a generous framing of new oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and sappy at the core, with great soil signature and grip, firm, buried tannins, fine focus and balance and a long, soil-driven and complex finish. Fine, fine juice. (Drink between 2038-2085)
A more uniform ruby purple, aged in demi-muids. The Trapets are bringing the wood effect down, and now use just a third new wood for Cuvée Ostrea. The nose is a big step up, much classier fruit, which also fills the mouth with a deep raspberry and bilberry fruit, before a touch of spice. Really long finish. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted Nov 2024.
The 2023 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has an exquisite bouquet with vivacious brambly red fruit. It is very refined and poised with great transparency, yet there is power here (unusual in this vintage). A little edgier and more tensile than the Clos de Vougeot, the palate is medium-bodied with finely spun tannins and a sapid finish. Long and tender, this is deeply impressive.(NM)
The delicious 2023 Latricières from Trapet has a deep blackberry fruit character with hints of violets, rosemary and a firm salty mineral underpinning. The texture is densely tannic and very firm. Pierre Trapet explains that this is because of the proximity to the cool winds of the Combe Grisard and to the abundance of limestone pebbles in the soil. Just about half of the grapes are fermented on native yeasts as whole clusters before ageing in cask (40% new).(CC)
Glowing purple, with a more classic nose, some strawberry in the fruit mix. Magical intensity despite the crop size, then a gentler more fluid finish, with a light tannin to finish.

Bid on this magnum of 2005 Domaine Armand Rousseau Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru (1.5L) (98BH). Burghound: "A positively kaleidoscopic nose features a wonderful panoply of spice and fruit aromas that offer something new and different with every sniff. The rich, full and utterly classic flavors are a study of the harmonious liaison of refinement and power that culminate in an explosive and driving finish that is even longer than that of the Clos St. Jacques yet it sacrifices nothing in terms of balance, harmony or transparency. A strikingly good wine packed with upside potential. While pronouncements of this sort are always fraught, it's possible that the 2005 Bèze could one day rival the best Rousseau Bèze ever (in my view), which is the legendary 1962. Time will tell but it at least has a shot." (01/2008)

The old-vine bottling from Trapet labelled 1859 is among the most impressive village-level wines in Gevrey. The deeply coloured wine has lush, ripe aromas of blackberry and plum and hints of eucalyptus, dark chocolate and earth. The texture is almost impossibly dense, with firm tannins and a very long finish. The grapes are from two parcels in the lieux-dits En Dérée and Champerrier with ancient vines (some exceeding a century) that have been converted to échalas (growing on stakes), fermented entirely or mostly as whole clusters. A memorable wine.(CC)
10 plots representing three of their 8.5ha. Deep purple with a lighter rim. A darker, denser fruit, less explosive than the Bourgogne. A few blackcurrants and bilberries, not quite squeezed till the pips squeak but you can see how this will become tighter later on. Two-thirds made in barrel, one third in eggs. Drink from 2028-2033. Tasted Nov 2024.
Product details coming soon.
A fine even fresh purple. Here the bouquet has retained a fresh vigour, confirmed on the palate. This Gevrey comes across slightly more raspberry than strawberry with a fine, evenly balanced fruit weight, and enough structure from acidity and tannin. Drink from 2028-2033. Tasted Nov 2024.
Impressively dark in color, this is dense and flavorful on the palate. Mocha, forest floor and blackberries dance across the palate. Finessed tannins and vigorous freshness give this length and moreish-ness. This wine has definitely achieved a step up this vintage.

A much denser purple. Coming after the Ruchottes, the Clos St-Jacques is like chalk and cheese, yet these are two great wines. This is much more structured, and while the fruit at the front of the palate is impressive enough, there arrives a wealth of darker berries behind, but no feeling of heat.

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a well-defined nose with beautiful red berry fruit, briar, hints of crushed stone and orange pith. This blossoms in the glass. The palate has exquisite balance, real depth and a gentle grip. There is a wonderful symmetry about this Clos Saint-Jacques, and there is a surfeit of mineralité towards the finish, the sapidity beckoning another sip. Outstanding. (NM)

Rossignol-Trapet’s magnificent Chambertin 2023 is initially a bit hard to read, with aromas that are a bit reticent on the initial attack, and a monolithic texture. With time, however, one can coax an intuition of greatness here. There is enormous ripe plummy fruit with a savoury, gamey edge and hints of mineral and ground coffee. The texture is tightly wound with extract and muscular tannins that draw it out to an immensely long finish. It is wonderful wine; I would not open it for 10 years, but it will easily drink for the next 50 after that.(CC)
Pre-Arrival
Entrancing on the nose thanks to alternating wafts of warm earth, spiced plums and wildflowers. There is notable extract here framed by long and slightly angular tannins. Bustling acidity reinforces the tannin texture for now, but there is ample girth, muscle and class for this to all be absorbed in time. Give this sturdy wine at least a decade. This is just under (0.98) a hectare planted two-thirds in 1912 and the remainder in 1972.

The 2013 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru is blossoming into a gorgeous wine. It has an attractive, pure and winsome bouquet with dark berry fruit, crushed stone and undergrowth aromas supremely well bound together by the oak. So precise and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, edgy and precise with just the right amount of salinity towards the finish. Très Grand Cru. This evinces the finesse that winemaker Charles Lachaux has brought to the domaine. Drink through 2045. (NM)

The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin En Champs has a delightful bouquet with the new oak a little more evident than the other cuvées, but that will be subsumed with age. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and fresh, crisp acidity. The 20% whole bunch imparts pepperiness on the finish. This is another cuvée that is a step up from the 2022 vintage and comes recommended.(NM)
Not surprisingly, the domaine’s vines in their tiny parcel of Griottes-Chambertin were also planted all the way back in 1919. There is only a barrel and a half of this wine in the cellars in more generous vintages like 2023 and I hesitate to think how much they will have in a much shorter crop like 2024. In any case, the 2023 Griottes is a stunning young wine, delivering a deep and complex bouquet of red and black cherries, dark berries, smoked meats, a beautiful foundation of chalky minerality, a touch of woodsmoke, brown spices, a hint of Gevrey mustard seed and a fine framing of cedary new oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused and bottomless at the core with old vine fruit, ripe, firm tannins, great balance and grip and simply stunning length on the complex and very, very promising finish. (Drink between 2042-2100)
Perfumed aromas of red cherries, rose petals, blood oranges, fresh flowers, blueberry bush and spices. The palate is silken and polished with fine-grained tannins that have no hard edges. The balance of power, finesse and precision is incredible. The ultimate drinking pleasure. Can be enjoyed now or for decades to come.
Bright aromas of red pinot fruit and earth lead to delicious lighter weight flavors that are at once sleek and seductive while concluding in a refreshing and mildly austere finale. To enjoy upon release.
Insider's Advantage
Note: from 35+ year old vines in Creux Brouillard and Les Marchais. This is also aromatically ripe with its more deeply pitched nose of red and dark currant, newly turned earth and a forest floor hints. The succulent, rich and generously proportioned flavors exhibit good if not truly special length on the sneaky long and again, slightly rustic finale. This could use better depth so a few years of keeping should help.
Mid ruby, nothing more forced than that. The bouquet has perhaps a fraction more nobility than the Bonnes Mares but you have to wait for it to come to you. This fills the mouth beautifully yet in such a discreet way. Effortless (though you know the effort!) with a crystalline note to the refined tannins, and a perfect lingering precision of alpine strawberry and the lightest of raspberries. Very distinguished. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted Nov 2025.
Pre-Arrival
Pure red fruits pop on the nose: açai, red cherries and field strawberries. Overt, spicy oak sticks out a bit for now, but the broad, turbo-charged fruit load will easily absorb it in time. The dynamic structure will give this a long life. The bracing acidity crackles while the supple, streamlined tannins offer more gentle support.
Pre-Arrival
The darkest in color of the Grand Crus here, the nose is exotic with sumptuously ripe fruit. Black cherries, star anise, fireplace embers and turned earth create ample complexity. There is more muscle and sinew than usual here, even though the wine remains medium in body. Black tea and plums linger on the flattering, mouthcoating finish. Very impressive.
Insider's Advantage
The Durochés have two plots by Griotte-Chambertin, on very limestone soil, and two small alluvial plots in lower Charmes close to Mazoyères, all fermented together. Dense mid purple, there is more concentration here, plenty of charming fruit up front but with more backbone than sometimes. Fine balance between fruit, tannin and acidity, with a clean long finish where the fruit keeps growing. Some eggs in use as well as barrels here. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted Nov 2024.
Pre-Arrival
A bright ruby purple. Good energy without massive concentration. A darker red berry fruit. No more than a middleweight Gevrey but a very pretty one with a fluid fruit that extends across the palate, and indeed returns after the very refined tannins. Drink from 2028-2032. Tasted Nov 2024.
