Reviewed October 2024The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a well-defined nose with beautiful red berry fruit, briar, hints of crushed stone and orange pith. This blossoms in the glass. The palate has exquisite balance, real depth and a gentle grip. There is a wonderful symmetry about this Clos Saint-Jacques, and there is a surfeit of mineralité towards the finish, the sapidity beckoning another sip. Outstanding. (NM)

Aromas of dark berries, cherries, plums, burning embers, loamy soil and black truffles, framed by a patina of toasty new oak, introduce Rousseau's 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques, a full-bodied, deep and layered wine with a velvety attack that segues into a concentrated, tightly wound core, concluding with a long, penetrating finish. This is a serious Clos Saint-Jacques that's built for the long haul.
The 2020 harvest chez Rousseau began on August 24th, with below-average yields, as was so often the case in Pinot Noir up and down the Côte. Cyrielle Rousseau admires the wines' unexpected freshness and attractive natural balance, an admiration I share. Unusually saturated in hue and undeniably concentrated, though not at the expense of the suave Rousseau house style, readers with the necessary connections and disposable income shouldn't hesitate to acquire these wines. Given their structure and vibrant acids, it wouldn't surprise me if these shut down after bottling, even if I don't think they will ever seem actively austere, so plan on exercising a bit of patience.(WK)

Burghound
Note: from a 2.21 ha parcel raised in 80% new wood; Rousseau noted that a parcel of .18 ha was just pulled up to be replanted. A ripe yet exceptionally fresh combination is comprised by the essence of black cherry and poached plum allied with an array of spice, floral, earth and wood nuances. There is strikingly good intensity to the elegant but punchy medium weight plus flavors that exude palpable minerality on the powerful, focused and superbly long and highly refreshing finale. The harmony and balance are impressive, and this built-to-age CSJ should prove to be very long-lived, even in the context of a wine that routinely repays several decades of cellaring.*Burghound Outstanding!*

The Rousseau family’s 2020 Clos St. Jacques is another simply brilliant young wine, with a touch of the exotic shading its bouquet of black cherries, sweet dark berries, grilled meats, lavender, dark chocolate, gorgeous spice tones, nutty new oak and plenty of upper register smokiness. On the palate the wine is pure, sappy, deep and full, with a gorgeous core of fruit, beautiful soil signature, ripe, seamless tannins and stunning length and grip on the perfectly balanced finish. This has the early flamboyance that the 1989 Clos St. Jacques possessed, and which nearly forced me to drink my half case of that wine before it had reached its tenth birthday! Do not make the same mistake with the 2020 and let it rest quietly in a corner of the cellar for at least a dozen years and allow the wine reach its full cruising altitude!
Notes
Acquired by the Rousseau family in 1954, the domaine's Clos Saint-Jacques holding spans the slope of this celebrated Gevrey-Chambertin premier cru. It occupies a central place in the estate's lineup alongside its grand cru holdings, despite retaining its premier cru classification.
