Compass Box & K&L have always had a special relationship. Since the inception of this special brand 25 years ago, we've seen eye to eye on every aspect of this business. It wasn't until 2011 that we were able to connect with legendary whisky maker John Glasser about the potential to do an exclusive for K&L. We had access to anything back then, but one trophy alluded K&L and exclusive Compass Box. That was until 2015 when John Glaser invited our spirits buying team to select an exclusive blend from their stocks, a now legendary blend of old peated malt an...

Just when you think you've tasted every type of booze known to man, you discover that there are more regionally specific spirits being distilled in places you've never considered. Take Bolivia, where they make a pisco-like spirit called Singani, distilled from Muscat of Alexandria grapes grown high in the Andes mountains. Muscat is an aromatic varietal, known for its fruity and floral character, and the Singani spirit takes on many of the perfumes found in the expressive grape. The result is a clean and vibrant brandy that drinks like something in betwee...

The vineyards of Ragnaud-Sabourin stretch far over the hills in Grande Champagne, 33 hectares of Ugni Blanc, with a bit of Folle Blanche, as far as the eye can see. This estate is known throughout France for having the goods, and we couldn't have been more impressed after visiting the property. Today the estate is run by Annie Sabourin, who is the daughter of the late Marcel Ragnaud, and she makes sure every drop lives up to the property's reputation. The collection of Ragnaud-Sabourin selections we tasted were spellbinding and easily one of the most pol...

Here we have it! Bourbon aficionados will know that it's extremely rare to find an age-stated whiskey from Heaven Hill, and that's what makes the Evan Williams 12 Year Old "Red Label" such a discovery. Bottled at 101 proof, it's an amped up version of everything the EW devotees love about this brand. The nose is dominated by classic tones of maple and brown sugar with a little bit of praline and toffee to take things even further into opulence. The rich palate conveys honeyed almonds, butterscotch, candied orange peel, and hints of fresh tobacco leaf. At...

The spectacular Ardnamurchan distillery on the far western coast of Scotland is without a doubt one of the top new distillers in Scotland. Owned by Adelphi Distillers Ltd, the famous bottler of high-quality single-cask single malt, they've spared no expense at creating the most sustainable distillery, achieving 2024 "Global Sustainable Distillery of the Year" in the Whisky Magazine's Icon's of Whisky awards. This single cask of cask-strength single malt was filled into a fresh ex-Old Forester bourbon barrel with Ardnamurchan's unpeated malt on February 2...

The much anticipated new release of Arran 10 Year. This fabulous Island Distillery was built in 1996 and their flagship 10 year has been around since 2006. Now, with the assistance of legendary design firm Stranger & Stranger, they've released this wonderful whisky with a completely new look and flavor. Arran is distilled in Lochranza at the first legal distillery situated here, despite the island's long history of illicit distillation. The owners have since built a second distillery across the island called Lagg, devoted to peated malt. The gorgeous new...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "From 'the oldest House in Armagnac' comes a well-balanced sipper that's reminiscent of Bourbon with its deep amber color; its rich, sweet caramel note; and bold finish that tastes of maple-butter sprinkled with clove and cinnamon. (KN)" (12/2012) 93 points Vinous: "Dartigalongue’s XO is burly, with cologne-like aromas, and surprisingly complex for its youth (10-year-old brandies in the blend). Buttery, with flavors of dried plum, candied ginger and walnut, and a spicy finish of clove and cardamom. A Rye drinker’s Armagnac. B...

92 points Whisky Advocate: "Sweet, with subtle, crisp, nutty oak, then comes fudge, ripe banana, and peach. The overall effect is like eating vanilla ice cream with toffee fudge and hazelnut sprinkles. The structure is thick and physical, the palate sweet and quite fat, with light hints of raspberry, fruit salad. A jag of acidity freshens the delivery on the finish. With water there’s more toffee, and it becomes slightly more yielding, with less oak. For me the gold standard of grain. (DB, Fall 2015)" 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "The name of this whisky ...

Orphan Barrel's new release is one of the few distillers that's still operatonal in the series. Linkwood Distillery at 18 years old selected and bottled by the owners, is indeed a rarity in this market. Here is the bottlers description, "Hailing from the pristine landscape of the Scottish Highlands, this rare 18-year-olds Single malt Scotch Whisky aged in American Oak honors the storied history of the Linkwood Distillery founded in 1821. The exceptional Ford's Gin is one of the most versatile London Drys on the market. Distilled at the exceptional Thames Distillery by master distiller Charles Maxwell and the famous Simon Ford. They start with a base of Italian juniper and coriander seed, and the recipe is expanded thoughtfully to include bitter oranges, lemon and grapefruit peel. Subtle jasmine and orris add a soft floral quality, while spicy angelica root and cassia bark give it some structure. I've always noted a smidge of cucumber, but the distiller won't cop to it. Anyway, the mixtur...

Here's a fabulous follow-up to the exceptionally good 25-year-old unpeated Ardmore that we featured in last year's Whisky Season. This much for typical Ardmore was peated to the usual medium level of around 14 ppm. Of course, this is using highland peat sourced from terrestrial vegetation rather than the Islay peat which is composed of ocean vegetation. Filled into a high-quality 2nd fill ex-bourbon barrel in July of 2009, it was bottled at cask strength of 57% abv without the use of coloring or chillfiltration. The resulting whisky is extremely expressi...

The Koskenkorva distillery in Southern Ostrobothnia was originally built by the Finnish alcohol monopoly, Oy Alkoholiliiki Ab, on the Koskenkorva family's land in 1941. On the banks of Kyröjoki river, the little village of just 2200 residents is a long 4 hours’ drive from Helsinki. The distillery began full operation in 1953 and at this time the country was still recovering from the great war. But the previous year, Helsinki Olympic Games had revitalized the whole nation and Koskenkorva was no exception. The first Koskenkorva product, Koskenkorva Viina,...

Wine Enthusiast: "Aged six months in large wooden barrels, this sweet vermouth is zesty and mildly spicy on the nose and palate. Flavors layer molasses and maple with dried sage and savory spices, plus a hint of orange peel in the back. (KN)" (11/2016) K&L Notes: This fabulous collaboration between Antica Distilleria Quaglia, Chef Frederico Ricatto, and the Jerry Thomas Project in Rome is looking to reinvent the omnipresent vermouth. Not the traditional sweet vermouth, it offers unprecendented complexity and depth not found in other red vermouths. With...

Our friends at Douglas Laing in Glasgow, with whom we do the Old Particular bottlings, have put together a series of regional malt blends that wonderfully showcase the stylistic flavor profiles of Scotlands main whisky producing sectors. Not only are the whiskies accurate reflections of a dying era in Scotch whisky production, they're some of the tastiest and most enjoyable whiskies we've discovered in ages. The Epicurean is the "Lowland" expression that absolutely brims with fresh fruit, sweet barley, and hard candy. It's a barley-rich malt that is like...

This lovely lowland distillery is one of the closest historical distilleries to the city of Glasgow and you might get lucky and see a head of Highland cattle that occasionally graze on the well-manicured lawns if you make the short trek out to Clydebank. Like most Lowland distillers Auchentoshan does a proper triple distillation leaving a finer spirit with fewer impurities and a soft sweet malty character. The distillery was founded in 1823 and operated continuously until being completely rebuilt in the late 1960s. In 1984, the famed whisky maker Stanley...

The artisanl mezcal distilled by Fernando Santibanez in Matatlan. Made from 100% Espadin, the agave is crushed and roasted in the traditional method using mesquite and ocote wood. Natural fermentation takes place in pine vats before double distillation in very old copper pots. This is awesome authentic mezcal, selling for well below the market rate. A great value and the perfect bottle to cut your teeth on or play with cocktails.

97 points Whisky Advocate: "This 34 year old whisky matured in the remaining active French oak casks from the original Corryvreckan batch invites you to dive into its complex aromas of dark fruit, chewy smoke, seaweed, plum, chestnut, roasted spices, black olive, salted nuts, soy sauce, and lime peel. Rich, oily, mouth-coating, and drying simultaneously, there’s peppered steak, salted pecan, toffee, soy sauce, umami, mushrooms in red wine, black cherry, leather, oak, and aniseed. 96 points Whisky Advocate: "Incredibly floral on the nose, with citrus peel, sliced apple, burning incense, sandalwood, peach pit, aged oak, and spices so fine you could count them by the grain. It’s weighty and honeyed, driven forward by the mizunara oak character, with waxiness and smoke progressing to lime zest, green apple, kumquat, cocoa, cinnamon, and vanilla extract, with a creamy elegance to the finish.” (JM)" (12/2023) 95 points Wine Enthusiast: "This blended whisky is an ideal sipper, with an enticing crème brûlée and dried apricot scents. Whisky Advocate: "Fragrant and herbal aromas, with pine needles, basil, green bell pepper, pea pod, black truffle, peppercorn, and smoke from smoldering dry mosses and wood shavings. It’s very smooth and refreshing, with pear, peppermint, lemon, lime, green tea, kiwi, and herbal notes, finishing with chopped mint, more herbal layers, and gentle peppery spice. A unique composition and a quintessential Japanese whisky experience. This shockingly delicious high proof blanco has come completely out of left field. From the relatively unknown Agave Conquista Distillery, it delivers a high proof blanco experience in a completely transparent way. The agave is organically farmed, estate-grown and additive-free. After roasting in brick ovens, it's fermented with only native yeast in stainless steel tanks before being double distilled on small pots and bottled at high proof in liters. Expect classic Lowland aromas and a crispy yet robust mouthfeel.

Wine Enthusiast: "Although the “Botanist” name might suggest a floral gin, instead the flavor profile veers toward herbs and spices. There’s a subtle, herbal scent, with anise flavors up front, backed by coriander seed and cassia bark on the spicy finish. Made by Bruichladdich Distillery, which is renowned for its Scotch, on a pot still named Ugly Betty. Sold in an attractive, square-shouldered, gift-worthy bottle. (KN)" (04/2012) K&L Notes: What happens when you take one of the greatest single malt distillers of all time, put him in a room with an old...

This is the Thompson Brothers foray into the world of blending. It's also proof that they've got some of the absolute best palates in the business. They seem to be getting access to stocks where others struggle, and this little vatting of over 8-year-old malts is one of the most intriguing and delicious malts on our shelves at any price point. SRV5 refers to Station Road Vat 5, the wooden vessel where this whisky is mingled before bottling. The Dornoch boys bottle in very small batches and the source material is of the highest quality. 96-100 points Wine Enthusiast: "Smells of ripe grapes, grape must and lead pencil in the initial whiffs; air contact stimulates baking spices, black currants, jasmine, pepper and paraffin. Entry is crisp, tart and intensely ripe; midpalate highlights black grape to maximum concentration. Finishes bittersweet to sweet. *Best Buy* (PP)" (11/2008) K&L Notes: The Jacopo Poli Sarpa is a perfect grappa for those who like a dry, not overly aromatic style that is very rich and complex. One of Italy's very top producers by any measure.

94 points Whisky Advocate: "For Nikka From the Barrel, it’s been a long road to Whisky of the Year. This Japanese blend made its U.S. debut in 2018, but its inception dates back more than 30 years. In 1985, Nikka Whisky Distilling Company’s blending team, led by Shigeo Sato, designed this whisky using both malt and grain whiskies produced at Nikka’s Yoichi and Miyagikyo Distilleries. When taking into account the full array of casks—bourbon barrels, sherry butts, refill hogsheads, and more—over 100 different constituent whiskies are enlisted.
