The 2024 Chassagne-Montrachet Village is a blend of seven lieux-dits with one-third from Morgeots, all touching Grand Crus. It has a touch of oyster shell on the nose that combines deftly with the citrus fruit. Fine delineation and focus. The palate is well balanced with a killer line of acidity, impressive depth and intensity, lightly spiced with a powerful and long finish that is unequivocally Premier Cru in standard. You will find few white Village Crus better than this.(NM)

They are Chassagne end, homogenous plot. Pale lemon colour. Here the nose has a sense of lifted energy alongside then weight of Morgeot. Quintessence of Chassagne for Bastien and consistent every year. Ripe grapefruit and a texture which makes one salivate. Finesse too. Pretty spectacular potential. *5 Stars*

Pure clean lemon yellow. Quite a difference in the bouquet as here the fruit ripens well and the proximity of Bâtard is evident in the extra weight of fruit. Striking intensity further back on the palate with a driving force of white fruit, backed up by a little more oak.

Note: a négociant wine from a purchase of must. Firm reduction dominates the nose. There is again good verve and freshness to the bigger-bodied and richer medium weight flavors that possess a caressing yet relatively powerful mouthfeel, all wrapped in a bone-dry, detailed and impressively long finale. This could use better depth but the development potential is such that more should reasonably develop if given a chance. Worth a look.*Burghound Outstanding!*

Pale lemon, clean and clear cut. Correctly ripe, a little bit of spice at the finish, which falls away a touch compared to the St-Aubin backbone. Still, a very sound Chassagne from white terroirs if I remember correctly. Drink from 2027-2031. Tasted Nov 2025.

Note: from Ez Crottes. Here too there is ample floral influence to the ripe and ever-so-vaguely exotic aromas of poached pear, white peach, orange peel and soft petrol. There is very good volume to the bigger-bodied and denser, though notably less refined, flavors that possess evident power on the bitter lemon rind-inflected finale. This is promising and a wine that should be more than capable of repaying 5 to 8-ish years of keeping.

Sab's "Le Gin" (500ml)

Sab’s Gin is a French distilled spirit from Chassagne-Montrachet in Burgundy. Sab's 7 Year Old "Le Marc" 100% Pinot Noir Tres Vieux Marc De Bourgogne (500ml)
Sab's 7 Year Old "Le Marc" 100% Pinot Noir Tres Vieux Marc De Bourgogne (500ml)

Sab’s Alembic Bourguignon is keeping alive one of Burgundy’s nearly vanished traditions: the bouilleur ambulant, or itinerant distiller, who once traveled from village to village transforming the region’s pomace and lees into eau-de-vie. Founded in Beaune in 2019 by Mathieu Sabbagh, Sab’s works directly with some of Burgundy’s most important winegrowing families, collecting freshly pressed grape pomace at the cellar door and, in the traditional manner, distilling it right at the domaine. Their Le Marc de Bourgogne Très Vieux is produced entirely from Burgundian Pinot Noir and carries the Marc de Bourgogne AOC, one of France’s historic appellations for grape-pomace brandy. The spirit is steam-distilled before spending seven years in small Burgundy oak barrels, followed by an additional six-month finish in Cognac casks, and is bottled at a robust 46% ABV. This is about as far removed from anonymous industrial marc as one could imagine. It is a spirit born directly from the raw material of great Burgundy, distilled by a producer dedicated to preserving a disappearing regional craft, then given serious time in barrel. For anyone fascinated by Burgundy, traditional French eau-de-vie or simply beautifully made old brandy, Sab’s offers a remarkable glimpse into a part of the region that even serious wine drinkers rarely get to experience.

Super-fresh aromas include those of smoky apple, pear, citrus, petrol and a similar whiff of rosemary oil. The rich, delicious and caressing yet powerful medium weight flavors that exhibit excellent length on the balanced, sappy and lightly austere finale. This is terrific for a villages-level Chassagne and while it could use better depth, the underlying material appears more than up to the job of developing it with a few years of bottle aging.*Burghound Outstanding!*

Picked among the first plots on 2nd September, as the vine selection is for chardonnay ‘très fin’. Mixed lemon and lime in colour. Compared to the St-Aubin this is rather fuller on the palate and fleshes out the middle. Complex and tight, will need a long time. The texture has many strands built in. Drink from 2027-2032. Sab's "Pinot" Gin (500ml)
Sab's "Pinot" Gin (500ml)

Leave it to a Burgundian distiller to find a way to make their terroir driven gin even more Burgundian. Sab’s Le Pinot Gin begins with the house base of eau-de-vie distilled from Burgundy Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, combined with neutral grain spirit and an elaborate collection of 15 botanicals ranging from juniper and coriander to ginger, citrus peel, rose petals, grains of paradise, cassia, cumin and star anise. But here Mathieu Sabbagh goes one fascinating step further, infusing grand cru Burgundian Pinot Noir pomace into the gin for six full months. The result is a completely distinctive 44% ABV gin that connects the flavors and raw materials of Burgundy with a decidedly modern approach to distillation. The Pinot pomace brings an additional layer of fruit, spice and vinous depth that separates this completely from conventional London Dry. It is simultaneously recognizably gin and unmistakably a product of Burgundy, precisely the sort of eccentric regional spirit we love finding.

The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes derives from five-year-old vines, but you'd hardly know it. Exhibiting aromas of white flowers, pear, toasted nuts and subtle reduction, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and vibrant, with a fleshy core of fruit and a precise finish. I've wanted to visit Domaine Marc Morey for several years, as this discreet Chassagne-Montrachet has long produced excellent wines that fly somewhat under the radar. Its origins go back to great-grandfather Fernand Morey, whose whites and reds I've adored and who presided over winemaking between 1919 and around 1950. The eponymous Marc Morey was his son, who ran the domaine for the second half of the twentieth century. Today, it's Sabine Mollard who presides, having joined the family estate in 2003. Fruit is gently crushed and pressed pneumatically, with a short and comparatively static cycle, followed by debourbage overnight at 12 degrees centigrade and the beginning of alcoholic fermentation in tank before barreling down. Working with a wide variety of coopers (including Chassin and François Frères), Sabine stirs the lees until the end of malolactic fermentation. Regional appellations see nine months in barrel, with the rest racked to tank just before harvest and bottled, under natural cork, in early spring.(WK)

Mid lemon yellow. Here there is an immediate impression of concentrated fruit moving into the yellow spectrum. Plenty of weight, even a bit of warmth, perhaps a slightly spirity feel from the wood. 50% new wood, being 2 x 500 litres. Harder to judge today but this should work out, and past performance of this vineyard suggests I may be under-rating En Remilly today. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted Oct 2024.

Joseph Colin has produced a Chassagne En Caillerets that is among the great wines of the village in 2024, offering pronounced aromas of lemon peel, acacia flowers, iodine and smoke. The texture is fresh and lively, but there is enough concentration and body here to allow the wine to age for decades. The domaine farms 0.40ha of very old vines (up to 100 years old) at the top of the slope, in thin, rocky soils. They are gently pressed and aged in 500- and 600-litre barrels (10% new) for a year and in tank for another four months.

2023 Domaine Philippe Colin Chassagne-Montrachet

Note: from 4 different lieux-dits. This is also aromatically fresh and bright with its expressive nose of white-fleshed fruit, more prominent petrol and a hint of rosemary oil. There is good punch to the finer, if not especially dense, flavors that possess both good detail and an attractive texture that carries over to the highly refreshing and firmer finale. This could use better depth so at least a few years of keeping is recommended.

The 2024 Chassagne-Montrachet Village is Niellon's largest cuvée, around 20,000 bottles, representing the entire appellation—10 different climats from 15 parcels. This is quite forward on the nose, with perfumed fresh lime scents intermixed with a touch of apricot. It is very… giving. The palate is actually more complex than the nose: fresh and quite edgy, well-integrated oak, nicely focused with a touch of pepperiness towards the finish. Well worth seeking out.(NM)

Mid lemon yellow. Grilled almonds Marjolaine suggests, and I agree. Once more the flesh and the oak on the nose are apparent. All the requisite weight and white fruit, silky length, a little salinity, understated but very long indeed. Rather hidden at the moment.

The 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet La Maltroye 1er Cru is more expressive on the nose compared to the Les Chenevottes. It is flinty and slightly fumé in style, with lifted mineralité and plenty of energy here. The palate is very well balanced with a slightly more honeyed texture. There's ample extract here with grippier tannins on the finish. Give this time because this is a serious Chassagne, but the Les Vergers will be flattering in its youth.(NM)
