Another of the cru classé properties outside the big-name appellations, but rather better-known, and a long-term reliable source of good left-bank Bordeaux. The nose has real interest, with notes of grilled currant, leather, freshly pressed tea leaves and tobacco leaves, fragrant and perfumed. It does not suggest great concentration or richness here, perhaps a little surprising for the vintage, but it nevertheless has undeniable appeal. Texturally it feels very relaxed, yet precisely defined, lightly peppery, with evident threads of cigar box and tobacco running alongside the maturing fruit. A rather cool style, especially for this vintage, with a tightly grained structure of ripe and finely grained tannins, which sits within a finessed and delineated substance. The tannins only really show through after the finish, but they are there. Charming and fresh, full of tobacco and leather complexity, draped over a slow fade of tannins, this has a lot going for it, now and into the future.
Bid on this 4-bottle tasting lot; including 1 2005 Bond "Melbury" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (95RP, 95VN, 95WE), 1 2005 Bond "Pluribus" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (98RP, 93VN, 92WS), 1 2005 Bond "St. Eden" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (97RP, 95VN, 94JS), and 1 2005 Bond "Vecina" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (98RP, 97VN, 97WE). Of the 2005 Bond "Pluribus" Bordeaux Blend, Wine Advocate writes: "The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Pluribus is from a relatively high-elevation vineyard on the steep slopes of Spring Mountain and planted in the white Tufa volcanic bedrock of that area... By far, the biggest, most backward and massive of all the 2005s, this wine behaved as if it were three or four years old, rather than ten. Dense purple, it offers notes of blueberry liqueur, St.-Estèphe-like earth, licorice and a gravelly note with incredible depth, lots of blackberries, and a finish that goes on for 45+ seconds... Deep ruby red, this is great stuff, broad-shouldered, laced with aniseed, liqourice, touches of bitter black chocolate, muscular tannins and a luscious fruit core. Lip smacking stuff, with 2005 energy and excitement. Gets more serious as it opens, revealing black pepper spice, sage, rosemary and white pepper. A wonderful wine, one to sink into. You can easily wait to drink this, and it will reward another three to five years in bottle, then go for decades. If you do open it, give it a long carafe. 50% new oak.
Dark in color, with lots of blackberry, mineral, licorice and a hint of toasty oak. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, caressing finish. Balanced and generous, with lots of fruit underneath. (JS)

This starts off a little bretty with barnyard undertones, but it blows off to flowers and rich fruit. Round and juicy, with yummy flavors. A long finish on this. Very spicy and earthy. St. Estephe character. Enjoy or age.
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2005 Pavie, St-Émilion (100JD, 100JS, 100RP, 100TWP, 97VN, 96ST, 95DC, 93JA), a quadruple 100-point wine from Gérard Perse’s celebrated estate, which he believes is the greatest Pavie he has made. Wine Advocate writes: “Dense, opaque purple to the rim, with a gorgeously promising nose of blackberries, cassis, graphite and cedar wood just beginning to emerge... This beauty is intense and full-bodied, with magnificent concentration, a majestic mouthfeel and a total seamless integration of tannin, wood, alcohol, etc... This is a tour de force in winemaking and certainly one of the top dozen or so 2005 Bordeaux. (RP)” (08/2015)

Bid on this bottle of 2005 Domaine Michel Gaunoux Corton-Renardes Grand Cru (95JG, 94BH, 91WS). John Gilman: "The 2005 Gaunoux Corton 'Renardes' was also tasted here in New York and it too was already quite hunkered down and ready for a long hibernation in the cellar. The deep, pure and classic nose reluctantly offers up scents of cherries, red plums, woodsmoke, coriander seed, hints of the game to come with bottle age, coffee and a great base of stony soil tones. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and rock solid at the core, with stunning transparency, ripe, substantial tannins, tangy acids and laser-like focus on the very, very long and very young finish. A great wine in the making. (Drink between 2025-2100) 95+ " (09/2011)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2005 Kistler "Dutton Ranch" Russian River Valley Chardonnay ((94-96RP), 92VN). Wine Advocate: "More weight and power along with notes of roasted hazelnuts, peach, and smoky, almost clarified butter smells emerge from the 2005 Chardonnay Dutton Ranch. More extroverted and exuberant than the McCrea cuvee, it is an unusually elegant effort (because the acids are crisp and refreshing) that should drink beautifully for 7-8 years. Kistler Vineyards, undeniably one of the world’s finest winemaking estates, is run with passionate dedication to detail and quality by Steve Kistler and Mark Bixler. It is wines like these that keep an old critic like me inspired and energized. (RP)" (12/2006)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Heitz Cellar "Martha's Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (95DC, 94JG, 93WS). Decanter: "A boisterous, exuberant vintage of Martha's Vineyard, showing notes of ripe black cherry, mint chocolate and loamy soil tones, with a great deal of fleshy amplitude and energy on the palate. These days, Martha's Vineyard is picked a bit riper and sees a bit more new oak, but by and large the fundamentals remain the same, distinguishing it as a rather classical wine in the modern Napa firmament. A strikingly pure nose of cassis, violets and blueberries gracefully gives way to rich, full, sweet and mineral-infused middle weight flavors that have cut-like-a-knife delineation as well as a very firm tannic spine that will also see this through well past its 25th birthday. While the Champans presently has a bit more flesh around the structure, this is a classic Taillepieds built on its minerality and is best cellared by those blessed with ample patience as this is the most backward wine in the range today. *Don't miss!, Outstanding*

A seductive style of wine in 2005, this Peyrabon has a deep ruby/purple color and round, juicy blackcurrant and black cherry fruit along with some licorice and floral notes. It is medium-bodied, surprisingly silky and concentrated. (RP)
The 2005 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron is brilliant and is drinking spectacularly well today, with notes of ripe currants, smoked tobacco, crushed stone, and that utterly classic, freshly sharpened pencil Pauillac characteristics that's so hard to find from anywhere else. Ripe, full-bodied, expansive, and seamless, this sexy, opulent, incredibly seductive 2005 will continue to drink well for another 30-40 years if well stored.
This needs time in the glass, but unfurls to reveal cedar, cinnamon, tobacco, cassis and rose notes. It's heady and confident stuff that I've tasted several times over the past few months and have been hugely impressed by, especially with food. (JA)
Pays d’Auge Calvados is produced from cider apples and must be double-distilled in traditional pot stills before aging in oak for at least two years. Distilled in 2005, this Domaine Hubert bottling carries a 20-year age statement and was selected as a K&L exclusive.
The purity of fruit to this is fascinating with plums, currants and other dark fruits. Then there is another layer of spices and chocolate. So much cassis. Full and very layered with chewy polished tannins and a long, long finish. Just starting to open. Changes all the time.
Dark bramble fruits with dark chocolate and eucalyptus leaf, as well as earthy, slightly leathery and forest-floor tones and a youthful, fruity vein. Full-bodied with dense, velvety tannins and almost chewy acidity that’s lively and long, cleansing the palate and pushing the length. The structure defies time, though it’s more elegant than powerful. Lesser perception of cabernet sauvignon here.
Lots going on aromatically, with notes of mocha, clay and cedar. It's a touch floral and impressively vibrant, with blackcurrant and blackberry fruit flavours, while the tannins exert a reassuringly fine-grained grip. Composed, well-structured and complex, this wine, from such a great vintage, is maturing nicely but still has plenty of life left in it. (SW)
Bid on this 3-half-bottle lot of 2005 Rieussec, Sauternes (375ml) (97RP, 96WS, 95IWR, 94WE, 93JS, 93VN). Wine Advocate: The 2005 Rieussec is a blend of 90% Sémillon, 8% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle picked between 23 September and 27 October. It has a fabulous bouquet that is mineral-rich and tensile. The palate repeats its performance from last year: focused, tense, laden with botrytis-rich fruit with a crystalline and sorbet-fresh finish that seals the deal. One of the best releases from the estate in recent years. (NM) (01/2017)

Bid on this 5-bottle lot of 2005 Leonetti Walla Walla Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (96WE, 95DC, 94RP, 93ST, 92WS). Wine Enthusiast: "The Cabernet is sharply defined, with interesting citrus flavors defining the borders of the fruit. Lemon peel, candied pineapple and even grapefruit add lovely grace notes indicative of rich, clean, natural acids and a wine with plenty of glycerin. The stunning red fruits are polished and backed with details such as dried herb, and a tiny hint of mint. This may well be the most ageworthy Leonetti Cabernet ever made. *Best Wines of 2008, Cellar Selection* (PG)" (12/2008)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Le Clos du Caillou "La Réserve" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (100RP, 97WS, 96ST). Wine Advocate: "The best bottle of this I've ever had, the 2005 Châteauneuf du Pape Reserve was utter perfection on this occasion. Made from a blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Mourvèdre that was raised mostly in demi-muids, it exhibits awesome notes of blackberry, licorice, smoked herbs, graphite and tinges of minerality. Decadent, massively full-bodied and with sweet tannin, this thrilling Châteauneuf is hard to resist now, yet should continue to knock it out of the park for another decade or more. (JD)" (02/2015)

Bid on this bottle of 2005 Joseph Drouhin Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru (93JG, 92BH, 92VN). John Gilman: "The 2005 Corton-Charlemagne is also rather forward out of the blocks, but with its puppy fat of fruit firmly based in stony minerality and with plenty of backend power harnessed by its structure. The bouquet is deep and complex, albeit rather fruit-driven for young Corton-Charlie, as it offers up notes of apple, iodine, bee pollen, vanilla bean and stone dust. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, long and racy, with much more reserve than is evident on the nose. The finish is very, very long, with excellent focus, great acidity and plenty of grip and stony soil tones. A lovely example of the vintage. (JG)" (11/2006)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2005 Pahlmeyer Napa Valley Chardonnay (91CG, 90ST, 90WS). Connoisseurs Guide: " **Two Stars** The temptation to dismiss this wine as too big, too ripe and too heavy is simply undone by its depth, balance and precision. True, it is a wine of size and a wine that is high in oaky richness, but if those traits are not dismissive by themselves for you, then there stands every chance that you will find this dramatic bottling to be just the ticket for salmon filets served alongside creamy polenta flecked with chives and lemon zest. And, as big and tasty as this wine is now, it has room to grow." (09/2007)

Bid on this bottle of 2005 Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac (100JD, 98DC, 98JS, 98RP, 98WS, 97VN, 95ST, 95WE). Jeb Dunnuck: "I think the 2005 Château Mouton Rothschild is pure perfection, and is has a ripe, powerful, yet weightless style not far off the 1982. A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc brought up in new barrels, it’s just now starting to enter its adolescence phase and has sensational notes of ripe black fruits, smoky, scorched earth, pipe tobacco, and chocolate. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Domaine Perrot-Minot Vosne-Romanée, from the acclaimed Morey-Saint-Denis domaine led since 1993 by Christophe Perrot-Minot, whose meticulous, low-yield approach has made the estate one of the most sought-after names in the Côte de Nuits. This village-level red Burgundy comes from the famed commune of Vosne-Romanée, home to Romanée-Conti and La Tâche, in the legendary 2005 vintage, when a long, dry, sunny run up to harvest produced ripe, structured and age-worthy wines even at village level. Now two decades on, expect black cherry, raspberry and plum layered with rose petal, violet, exotic spice, forest floor and savory earth, with a silky, mature palate, resolved tannins and a long, perfumed finish. A collectible, cellar-aged red Burgundy from a benchmark vintage, ready to enjoy now.

Still youthfully ruby/plum-hued with very little in the way of bricking, the 2005 Château La Fleur-Petrus has a gorgeous perfume of red and black fruits that give way to more spicy, floral, leather, and mineral nuances with time in the glass. Ripe, medium to full-bodied, and expansive on the palate, it has still-present, velvety tannins, a layered, mouthcoating texture, and a brilliant finish. Straight-up delicious, this ripe, sexy, oh, so satisfying Pomerol can be drunk any time over the coming 15-20 years with incredible pleasure.
Still inky hued and not yet in its prime, the 2005 Château Leoville Las Cases is nevertheless jaw dropping good, and certainly a perfect wine in this reviewer’s opinion. Cassis, ripe currants, leather, graphite, crushed stone, and smoke all define the aromatics, and it has a massive, full-bodied profile on the palate as well as the more focused, regal style of the Chateau. There’s no shortage of tannins, it has incredible purity, integrated acidity, and a monster of a finish. It actually has a touch of Latour-like character, and it needs another 4-6 years, if not a decade, to hit prime time, and will have 30 years of longevity. The 2005 is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot and Cabernet Franc, representing only 37% of the total production.
Joël Taluau is a fabulous grower in St. Nicolas de Bourgueil known for making some of the purest expressions of cabernet franc in the Loire. All is hand harvested, cuvees are based on vine age and soil composition, wines are fermented and aged in stainless steel, with a light fining and no filtration before bottling. The 2005 Vieilles Vignes, from a single plot planted in 1934, has power, depth and grace, this their flagship wine will improve for the next 7-9 years but can be enjoyed now for those of you who like a mouthful of wine.
The Château Léoville-Poyferré 2005 has a rich and opulent bouquet with lavish ripe black cherries and wild strawberry, just a touch of licorice rendering it even more extravagant. The palate is full-bodied with ripe, rounded tannin, touches of licorice and glycerin on the mid-palate with savory notes flourishing towards the finish. This is almost a brash, hubristic Saint Julien, one for those who prefer a more opulent style of Bordeaux while maintaining complexity. Chapeau Didier Cuvelier. (NM)

A blend of 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, from a cool limestone terroir on the plateau, the 2005 Château Pavie Macquin is extraordinary juice, and the finest vintage of this cuvee I’ve ever tasted. Sporting a saturated purple color as well as an off the hook bouquet of crème de cassis, blackberries, smoked earth, chocolate, and Asian spices, with a sensational sense of minerality developing with time in the glass. Deep, full-bodied, massively concentrated, and multi-dimensional, it’s just now at the early stages of its drinking plateau and it will probably keep for another 2-3 decades. Count yourself lucky if you have bottles of this in the cellar!

The 2005 Montrose continues to show brilliantly, unwinding in the glass with notes of blackcurrant, red fruits, loamy soil, black truffles and cigar ash. Full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it's still brooding and tannic, with lively acids and an imposing chassis of structuring—and artery-cleansing—extract. Still an adolescent, it's one of the last unrepentantly old-school vintages of Montrose, and Médoc purists couldn't own enough. While this remains a very youthful wine, it is now apparent that the 2005 will, at maturity, surpass the 1989 and 1990. (WK)
Pre-Arrival
The 2005 Château Haut-Bailly just continues to drink brilliantly, with a massive, rich, full-bodied style as well as the château’s inherent sense of elegance and finesse. Ripe red and black fruits, smoked tobacco, graphite, saddle leather, and floral notes all define this beauty, and it has flawless balance, ripe yet perfectly integrated tannins, and just a regal, seamless, utterly compelling profile that is such a joy to drink today. It has another two decades of prime drinking ahead of it.

You would never guess that one of the most distinctive cellars in Bas-Armagnac sits just off the road in the tiny Landes village of Perquie. Domaine de Charron is not some grand château operation, but a proudly microscopic estate built around Baco, the hybrid grape that seems almost purpose-built for the sandy, iron-streaked sables fauves of the region. The Lartigue family’s story is part accident, part stubbornness: their vines had long fed the cooperative, with the occasional barrel tucked away for family use, until 1985, when Jacques and Claude Lartigue refused to let the old Baco disappear and revived production under the Charron name. The scale remains almost absurdly small, with only a handful of casks produced in a normal year, yet the style is monumental. The chai itself tells you plenty: beautifully kept, orderly, and almost shockingly immaculate by regional standards, a manicured little cellar where every cask seems to have its place. Charron is aged in new oak and then essentially left alone, a method that feels closer in spirit to great bourbon than to most polished, racked Armagnac. That is exactly why this 2005 single barrel matters. It captures one of the region’s most idiosyncratic estates at full strength, showing what happens when old vines, tiny production, patient farming, traditional distillation, and a radically hands-off cellar philosophy all point in the same direction.

Bid on this magnum of 2005 Domaine Armand Rousseau Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru (1.5L) (98BH). Burghound: "A positively kaleidoscopic nose features a wonderful panoply of spice and fruit aromas that offer something new and different with every sniff. The rich, full and utterly classic flavors are a study of the harmonious liaison of refinement and power that culminate in an explosive and driving finish that is even longer than that of the Clos St. Jacques yet it sacrifices nothing in terms of balance, harmony or transparency. A strikingly good wine packed with upside potential. While pronouncements of this sort are always fraught, it's possible that the 2005 Bèze could one day rival the best Rousseau Bèze ever (in my view), which is the legendary 1962. Wine Advocate: Gérard Perse believes this is the greatest Pavie he’s made to date, although certainly I would argue that list includes the 2000, as well as the 2009 and 2010, among his superstars. This wine, which I had both in the 2005 horizontal report in the Wine Advocate, and at a mini-vertical with Perse at the restaurant Maison Boulud in Montreal, looks to be a 75- to 100-year wine. Dense, opaque purple to the rim, with a gorgeously promising nose of blackberries, cassis, graphite and cedar wood just beginning to emerge, it tastes more like a three-year-old than wine that is already a decade old. Today the wine's semillon side dominates, but the unctuous texture of this superconcentrated white blend is nicely lifted by the sauvignon blanc element. Finishes with superb energy and length..."
