Compass Box & K&L have always had a special relationship. Since the inception of this special brand 25 years ago, we've seen eye to eye on every aspect of this business. It wasn't until 2011 that we were able to connect with legendary whisky maker John Glasser about the potential to do an exclusive for K&L. We had access to anything back then, but one trophy alluded K&L and exclusive Compass Box. That was until 2015 when John Glaser invited our spirits buying team to select an exclusive blend from their stocks, a now legendary blend of old peated malt an...

Mitchell Masotti may not be a household name (yet) however, if you're a lover of big, bold Napa Cabernet I'm almost certain you've tasted his expertise before. Mitchell is the long-time right-hand-man of iconic winemaker Russel Bevan. Having just completed his 10th harvest at Bevan Cellars as Associate Winemaker, he's played a huge part in the 18 x 100-point wines and more than 40 x 97+ point wines released since his tenure began! In his roll he also makes the wines for numerous pretigeous clients such as: Tench, PerUs, Envy, Carter, Harrison, Chateau Bo...

100 points Jane Anson: "Easily the best Champagne I had all year, first tasted at a château lunch. I couldn't stop thinking about it, and eventually bought a bottle for my husband's 50th. Just so much power and precision, while still having the delicacy, easy glamour and the most moreish delivery of fresh acidities and fleshy citrus. At it opens, toasted brioche, liqourice root and oyster shell curl out of the glass. Richard Geoffroy cellar master." The spectacular Kanosuke distillery melds tradition and innovation unlike any other in the world. Based a short drive from the southern city of Kagoshima, the prefecture is the heart of distillation in Japan. The heat and humidity of the southern Island of Kyushu create an environment much more suited for distillation than the long slow fermentations needed for high quality Sake. The famous Kozuru Sochu was created by Kanosuke Komasa and lays claim to being the first barrel aged Sochu in Japan. The distillery baring Komasa-sans name is the vision of his ...

99-100 points Decanter: "In 2021, ‘we had a nicely paced harvest... surely a very fortunate vintage for us, for Bolgheri,’ said Priscilla Incisa della Rocchetta at the launch in London of the 2021 vintage of Sassicaia. Welcome rain in mid-August came at just the right time to save the harvest, and production ended up being slightly higher than in 2020. Around eight to 10 separate vinifications were made, fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and spontaneous malo. The wines were racked to second- and third-use barriques in December 2021, the...

Full body with ripe and chewy tannins, but this remains focused and dialed-in thanks to mouthwatering acidity. Not to mention beautiful blue fruit that comes to the surface, particularly on the long finish." (09/2018) 94 points Wine Advocate: "The Mazzei family was among the first to embrace the Gran Selezione category of high-end Chianti Classico. Try after 2022." (07/2021) 92 points Vinous: "The 2019 Chardonnay is a unique wine, as it includes a fair amount of Viognier that adds pretty floral and tropical overtones. Apricot, mint, tangerine oil, chamomile and dried flowers all open nicely in the glass. (AG)" (01/2021)

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Vinified primarily in concrete with a small proportion of whole-bunch fermentation, there's a lifted, airy freshness to Gigognan's Clos du Roi that's consistent from vintage to vintage. A full-bodied blend of Grenache (70%), Mourvédre (20%) and Syrah (10%), it's packed with layers of succulent blackberry, cherry and plum flavors, edged by a stony, salty minerality. *Editors' Choice* (AI)" (11/2022) 93 points Wine Spectator: "A meaty wine, with converging flavors of earth, tar, violet and fruit, plus cranberry and cassis note...

We only received 300 bottles of this all Pinot Blanc rarity from Lamoureux, an all- estate-grown Champagne from Les Riceys, just three miles from the border with Burgundy. This comes from a half-acre parcel that only yields one press load each year, but sadly in some years yields nothing as Pinot Blanc buds early and is prone to early frost. This has seen three years of aging on the lees and has some very nice toasty quality to go with the exotic fruit of the Pinot Blanc. Best of all, this broad, rich Champagne finishes dry but not austere. (Gary Westby,...

Maxville has an incredible estate high in the mountains of Chiles Valley, a sub-AVA of Napa Valley, famed for its rugged, rocky soils and cooler growing temperatures from the 1,200ft+ elevation. Established back in 1974, this large property is over 1000 acres in total, but only 10% of that is planted to vines. The rest left as wild habitat, forest and a large lake. Winemaker Camille Benitah was born and raised in Bordeaux. She learned her craft at the La Tour Blanche school in Sauternes, and worked for several Chateaux around Bordeaux before moving to Na...

The incredible Dornoch Distillery is easily the most exciting new distillery operation in Scotland today. Run by brothers Phil & Simon Thompson, they understand the desires of true whisky lovers like few other distillers in the region. While their tiny distillery can only produce a handful of barrels a year, they're in the process of building a much more substantial plant and while we wait, they've built an excellent independent bottling operation known as Thompson Bros (Redacted Bros stateside.) This special whisky pays homage to their home region, a ...

90 points James Suckling: "Pastry, baked-apple and citrus aromas here. It’s medium-bodied, fresh and gently yeasty with fine bubbles. Nicely balanced." (06/2024) Wine Spectator: "A light, lively Champagne, with a pure note of crunchy green apple riding the lacy texture, accompanied by hints of almond skin, ground ginger and pink grapefruit pith. Modest finish. Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Vibrantly textured with a lemony freshness and a hint of toast on the finish. (DWWA 2022)" (06/2022) K&L Notes: Maison Laudacius is an association of farmers working in the small region of Montlouis-sur-Loire. 93 points Whisky Advocate: "The first thing you notice is the elegant fragrance of lychee, spring blossoms, lily, rosewater, and raspberry meringue. Deeper in, grassy notes with star fruit, kumquat, and kaffir lime leaves. The flavors offer perfection in their simplicity: silky honey, soft spices, crystalized pineapple, barley sugar, lemon, and orange. On the finish, the spices chatter on and on as the sweet citrus and honey fade in and out. One to cherish. The palate is weighted with ripe passionfruit, nectarine and honeysuckle. This is ripe and rich. It's densely packed and acidity trots in line, enabling a long, slippery finish. A hint of celery salt and raw cashew on the finish with a smattering of lacey skin texture. Lots of value here, for the price tag, and a memorable wine." It is tauter than the Unisson counterpart with a medium to full-bodied palate, crystalline and lively texture and a slightly smoky, ethereal, long finish. This single vineyard, 100% Meunier champagne comes from the oldest and best plot of Thierry Thibault's estate, La Croix St. Remy in the fabled-for-meunier village of Verneuil. The over fifty year old parcel is vinified in stainless steel and was aged for six years on the lees and then more than a year on the cork. Thierry's father was the chef de cave at Charles Heidsieck, and was a huge believer in post disgorgement ageing. The results are fantastic- a rich tarte tatin nose and mid palate, filled with Meunier personality but free of any rustic flavors, ...

Flavors of red currant-cranberry confiture and orange bitters wrap around cardamom spice, and a long, supple finish. (TP)" (10/2024) K&L Notes: A real wow factor wine, the 2023 Brick & Mortar Anderson Valley Pinot Noir is explosive on the nose and palate. This 2010 Gran Reserva from our favorite Rioja winery is back in stock! As is the case with so many other great spots in Spain, Bodega Casa Juan is located opposite the village church, in the beautiful walled pueblo of Laguardia. The winery is a converted flour mill, featuring concrete tanks for fermenting and blending the wine, and barrels that are used for up to seven years. These are traditional Riojas in elaboration and spirit, though the site specificity of their Laguardia and Villabuena vineyards confers a fruit character all its own to these wines...

Gorgeously rich, with little fruits dancing through a meadow. Once again, I do see the magic of this. Henri was strongly advised by his father to look after “Madame de la Mouchère”. It feels good in the mouth, offering flavors of blackberry, strawberry, chocolate-covered coffee bean and vanilla. Satin tannins dissolve into a soft rose-petal finish. (MD)" (07/2022) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Sweet oak, vanilla, cherry and bitter almond flavors converge in this muscular, balanced red. The oak still needs time to integrate, with ample fruit to offset it. The finish is long and compact. Tempranillo and Graciano. Best from 20...

Alexandre Le Brun is the smallest producer that we import (or even carry) from Champagne at just 7.5 acres. He only makes wine from half of the grapes he brings in, selling the rest off to negociants; his production totals just one thousand cases a year. This tiny scale allows Alex to do nearly everything himself and this hands-on approach shows through in the finished product. He only uses his own estate fruit for his Champagne, and this wine comes from just two rows in the grand cru of Chouilly, in a plot called La Derriere du Mont Aigu. This is electr...

Elisabeth Goutorbe and her husband Jean-Marie Egrot run their tiny production Champagne house almost entirely by themselves. They get very little help from their cat Maurice, but can rely on Elisabeth’s father, René Goutorbe of Champagne Henri Goutorbe for a little bit of help. Of the 15 acres they own in Ay, Louvois, Tauxieres and Mutigny, they only keep the fruit from their 2.5 best—mostly in Ay, but also a touch of Louvois Chardonnay for balance. The wonderful Glengoyne distillery is always one to keep an eye. Built in 1833, it was sold by Archiball Macllelan to the Lang Brothers where it remained until 1965 when it was purchased by a predecessor organization to Edrington Group. In 2003, it was sold to blenders and bottlers Ian Macleod and they've rightfully made Glengoyne a worldwide brand. They're famous for their sherried malt and it's rare to see a butt make it out of their warehouses under anyone else's label. There is a little flesh apparent even on the nose from the age of the vines. Excellent tension behind, a searing chiselled white fruit, for once the old vine aspect really adds something rather than just making more concentrated. Xavier Vignon's greatest strength as a winemaker is his ability to establish long lasting and unique relationships with his partner winemakers and growers. For more than a few years, Vignon has made exciting and sumptuous modern wines but he has also indulged in a few unique and interesting projects along the way. One such project is what we call the vintage series. From those long-standing relationships, Xavier finds parcels of vintage wine from domaines that have been sitting on juice in both barrel and tank for extended periods of time. Sometimes d...

Dosage 8.3 g/l. More fruity than their whites. Blood orange with a touch of sweetness that I didn’t find in the white wines. Lime bonbon. Dusty spices on the finish, like fine-ground walnut skin. For decades now, our Kalinda private label has been providing K&L customers with awesome wines at a fraction of what they'd normally pay under the producers' mainstay labels. Naturally, no producer wants their wines on the market for less than what they'd usually sell for, so the trade-off is anonymity. This is a superb Cabernet-very elegant and user friendly already. Lots of sweet cassis and red fruit aromas that follow to the palate. No hard edges here-drink it young with a prime rib or steak dinner. Will cellar well for five plus years. clyde
93 points Vinous: "The NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Unisson Grand Cru is a pure Chardonnay from Avize, blended from the 2016 and 2017 vintages. A most subtle nose allows glimpses of dried corn husk but stays subdued, because it all happens on the beautifully chalky palate. Depth becomes apparent with the first sip of this slender, taut, bright and lithe Champagne that delves and drives deep into chalk, adding slight yeasty autolysis and really fine mousse. Everything about this forsakes overtness in favor of depth, beautifully elegant with alluring, salty, ch...

92 points Burghound: "If you enjoy overtly yeasty Champagne this would make a good choice as there is plenty of it here framing the relatively elegant nose that combines notes of citrus, white flowers, pear and apple scents that display wisps of secondary development. The old vines definitely are in evidence here with fine mid-palate density that is supported by a moderately fine mousse, all wrapped in a delicious, sappy and lingering finish. This isn't a particularly refined example but I quite like it for its complexity and clear concentration." (10/20...

Mas Codina is a 40-hectare estate in Alt Penedès which dates back to 1681. This Gran Reserva Cava was hand-harvested from 25- to 40-year-old vines and estate-bottled. Vines are planted in calcareous and sandy clay soils which keep the wine minerally and lively. Varietals include Macabeo, Xarel-lo, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay. 100% hand-riddled, it has spent over 30 months on its lees and is bottled with no dosage.

It is early evening in Napa, but there is still plenty of action in the winery, where various lots are being pressed under the watchful eye of winemaker Nigel Kinsman. There are some moments where I would very much like to be a civilian, a regular person enjoying the night, but I am more concerned with our guests having a great night, so I quickly go back to check on our wines. Giacone Ranch Vineyard sits at the confluence of the Estrella River and Huerhuero Creek with incredibly rocky, gravely soils like those of Pessac-Léognan in Bordeaux. These ideal conditions produce and powerful, concentrated and opulent style of Cabernet with intense flavors and lush textures on the palate.

Domaine Cherrier was founded in 1930. Since then four generations of the family have run the estate. The domaine has limestone and calcareous clay soils that wonderfully influence the character of the grapes grown there. The Sancerre is consistently delicious, with citrus, chalky minerality and light floral notes. Its dry finish complements seafood and cheese beautifully. Simply gloriously sculpted, the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino is indeed statuesque and stately. While it doesn’t give everything up all at once, it is gracious in its presentation.
