Macallan 12 Year Old "Sherry Oak" 110 Proof Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)
Macallan 12 Year Old "Sherry Oak" 110 Proof Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

When word got out that we were finally seeing a Macallan 12 Year Old at 110 proof, the collective gasp from the Scotch community was audible. For years, we have loved the Sherry Oak 12 for its elegance, but we have always wondered what that iconic Speyside spirit would look like if it were allowed to keep its muscles. Most Macallan is dialed back to 43% ABV to stay polite, but this "Distillery Exclusive" style bottling is anything but. This is Macallan with the volume cranked up, proving that underneath all that luxury branding, there is still a powerful, oily, and intensely characterful malt. This isn't just about the heat, though. At 55% ABV, the sherry influence isn't just a suggestion; it is a full-blown conversation. The higher proof acts as a magnifying glass for those classic European oak spices and the rich, dried fruit notes that have made this distillery a legend. It is a dense, brooding, and unapologetically bold expression that reminds me of the great "Cask Strength" bottlings of the early 2000s. It's not just another raisin bomb either. Diving in, the nose is a massive wave of Oloroso sherry, leads with sticky medjool dates, singed orange peel, and a heavy dose of holiday spice. You do get that classic Macallan "Christmas cake" aroma, but with an added layer of espresso grounds and dark manuka honey. On the palate, the texture is incredibly viscous. It coats the tongue with layers of dark chocolate, ginger snaps, and stewed plums, while the higher proof brings a vibrant black pepper and cinnamon zing that keeps it from feeling too heavy. The finish is epic, trailing off with a dry, resinous oak and a lingering sweetness of golden raisins and clove. This is Macallan at its most raw and impressive.

Maiden's Blend (Edrington Blend) 25 Year Old Single Sherry Butt #8 Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)
1999 Maiden's Blend (Edrington Blend) 25 Year Old Single Sherry Butt #8 Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)

Vintage Bottlers’ inaugural 25-year-old Maiden’s Blend is an ambitious and deeply considered project, marrying carefully selected parcels from across Scotland into a single cohesive vision, further elevated through a collaboration with artist Jim Moir, better known as Vic Reeves, whose distinctive artwork adorns the labels and packaging. The youngest spirit in this blend was distilled in 1999 and laid into a first fill sherry butt for a full quarter century. This single cask expression (#8) was bottled at 43.8% ABV, offering a softer, more approachable take on the broader blend concept. Word is these are casks lost within the transitions through the many stages of Edrington Group's blending operations. The nose opens with nuts and gentle spice, followed by a pleasant oily vanilla with time in the glass. The palate highlights classic Speyside sweetness alongside lightly smoky malt and a subtle thread of treacle toffee. The structure is more delicate but well integrated, with grain and malt working in harmony. The finish is shorter, offering nutty toffee and a whisper of peat smoke. A balanced and quietly expressive cask.

Cambus 41 Year Old "The Perfect Fifth" Ex-Bourbon Single Grain Scotch Whisky (750ml)
1979 Cambus 41 Year Old "The Perfect Fifth" Ex-Bourbon Single Grain Scotch Whisky (750ml)

When The Perfect Fifth released this extraordinary 41-year-old Cambus in 2020, it carried a retail price of roughly $1,100, entirely reasonable on paper for a cask-strength whisky distilled in 1979 at a distillery that had already been closed for nearly three decades. Today we're able to offer that exact whisky for a fraction of its original price, and at this level it becomes one of the most astonishing old Scotch values we've seen in years. Cambus was one of Scotland's great grain distilleries, enormously important to the blending industry before closing permanently in 1993, and stocks of this age are becoming genuinely finite. Cask #90003 was distilled April 25, 1979 and spent 41 years in a first-fill ex-bourbon barrel before being bottled June 15, 2020 at a natural 53.2% ABV, yielding just 283 bottles. Despite the enormous age, this is not tired old grain. The nose is packed with pastry, nougat, toasted nuts, orange, vanilla and sweet oak. The palate remains remarkably fresh and energetic, with citrus, honey, sponge cake, almond, tea and gentle spice carrying through a long, polished finish. Whiskyfun's Serge Valentin scored it 88 points extremely high for the discerning Frenchman, while Jim Murray gave it 96. At $350, finding 41-year-old whisky of this pedigree, at full cask strength, from a long-closed distillery feels almost absurd.

Compass Box "Orchard House" Blended Scotch Malt Whisky (750ml)

A whiff of mealy, floury apples, pear, candied lemon peel, and fruit teas, this is certainly light and fruity, genteel even, yet a little timid overall. Soothing and creamy to drink, there's poached pears in condensed milk, white grape, a slow-paced crescendo of spice, and a dash of tangy citrus peel, followed by canned pears and a whir of spices on the finish. Carefree whisky for happy-go-lucky drinkers. (JM, Winter-2021)

This single cask expression (#6) was bottled at 44.6% ABV, offering a singular take on the broader blend concept. Word is these are casks lost within the transitions through the many stages of Edrington Group's blending operations. What immediately stands out is the richness and composure. The nose opens with treacle toffee and toasted Brazil nuts, a dense, inviting profile that speaks to both quality wood and mature spirit. The palate is plush and velvety, built around nougat and soft confectionary sweetness, with a gentle thread of smoke and cereal grain keeping everything grounded. The finish carries that warmth forward, returning to toffee-laden richness with a soft glow. Four distinct barrels exist of this exquisite rare blend, each with its own personality.

Kilchoman "Machir Bay" Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Many are aware of our affection for this wonderful new distillery on Islay. This, being their entry level product, deserves to be a benchmark. If nothing else it should provide a wonderful education for any Islay lover. What happens when you put Ardbeg spec barley into steel fermenters and Kilchoman's tall little still? Add an ultra fine heart cut and a thoughtful wood management program and you've got truly soulful whisky that's still Islay in every way. Proof positive that great whisky need not be old. Zesty and full of oceany brine, the peat at this age stands up and smacks you right across the face. Sweet malt and mild rancio notes whisper in, but one does not forget the rugged shoreline just below the farm where this whisky was distilled. A pleasure, to say the least.

Glenfiddich 16 Year Old "Aston Martin F1 Edition" Release No. 2 Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Glenfiddich 16 Year Old "Aston Martin F1 Edition" Release No. 2 Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Few names carry more weight in Formula One design than Adrian Newey, the legendary engineer behind some of the most dominant cars in the sport’s history. For the second year of Glenfiddich’s partnership with the Aston Martin Formula One Team, Newey’s philosophy became the inspiration for a whisky engineered with equal attention to the details beneath the surface. Malt Master Brian Kinsman built this 16-year-old from five precisely chosen components: first-fill bourbon barrels, Port pipes, Oloroso sherry casks, red wine casks, and a final touch of Fino sherry butts. Much like the hidden aerodynamic elements of an F1 car, every cask serves a purpose, contributing sweetness, richness, structure, or lift to the final composition. The whisky moves from rich stewed fruit, flowers, marzipan, and polished leather into silky toffee, caramelized sugar, ripe orchard fruit, and finely controlled dry oak. Bottled at 43% ABV with a long, elegantly sweet finish, Release No. 2 combines Aston Martin glamour, Newey’s relentless pursuit of performance, and Glenfiddich’s extraordinary whisky reserves in one remarkably polished package. This is Formula One engineering translated into single malt.

The youngest spirit in this blend was distilled in 1999 and laid into a first fill sherry butt for a full quarter century. This single cask expression (#7) was bottled at 44.6% ABV, offering a more powerful interpretation of the broader blend concept. Word is these are casks lost within the transitions through the many stages of Edrington Group's blending operations. The nose is immediate and assertive, with a medicinal edge layered over dense cocoa butter and dark chocolate richness. With a bit of air or water, dark berries, nutmeg, and cinnamon emerge alongside a subtle honeyed sweetness. The palate is structured and intense, unfolding slowly with spice, fruit, and grain in balance. The finish leans drier, with pipe tobacco and gentle smoke fading steadily. Compass Box "Crimson Casks" Blended Scotch Malt Whisky
Compass Box "Crimson Casks" Blended Scotch Malt Whisky

Few companies have done more to change the perception of blended Scotch than Compass Box. Founded in 2000 by John Glaser, the London based blending house has built its reputation by sourcing exceptional parcels of mature malt and assembling them with a level of transparency and flavor driven design rarely seen in the category. Crimson Casks is the richest permanent expression in the modern Compass Box range, built around a core of sherry matured malts selected for depth, fruit, and texture. The blend draws heavily from whisky distilled at Benrinnes and matured in first fill oloroso sherry butts, supported by parcels of malts from distilleries such as Glen Moray and others aged in additional sherry and custom French oak wine casks. The result is a deeply colored, full bodied whisky bottled at 46% ABV with natural color and no chill filtration. The nose shows dense red fruit, cocoa powder, and sweet pipe tobacco layered over clove and polished oak. The palate is rich and rounded with cherry compote, raisin, and dark caramel balanced by baking spice and toasted malt. A luxurious modern sherry driven blend that delivers serious depth while retaining the balance and drinkability that Compass Box is known for.

The Perfect Fifth Òran "Blend Nò. 2" Blended Scotch Whisky (750ml)
The Perfect Fifth Òran "Blend Nò. 2" Blended Scotch Whisky (750ml)

In this time of the single malt there is a temptation to regard a blend with a touch of disdain-the poor member of a noble family. Yet it is anything but. The blend of grain whisky and malt is a creation offering myriad possibilities. Òran is, unashamedly, an old school blend - one recognizable to whisky lovers in the heyday of blended whisky some 100 years ago. Where the grain and malt contents are created separately but ultimately act as the perfect foil for the other. The objective is delicate complexity and finely tuned balance.I trust that you will find it here. Beautifully mouth-filling, the delicate smoke and the lightest shade of grape combine for a sum much bigger than the parts. The malts and grains form juicy layers through which the spices easily permeate. Astonishingly mouth-watering and fresh, despite some obvious age at work.

Maclean's Nose Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)

Maclean's Nose Blended Scotch Whisky, blessed with a splendid West Coast character, offers a unique value proposition. Further fortified by its eco-friendly packaging, the whisky is non-chill filtered and displays a natural color, contributing to its authenticity. Holding an ideal 46% ABV, the whisky is part of an initial release of 25,000 bottles, and is now making its mark across the United States. Colored burnished gold, it evokes a delightful surge of burnt citrus peel, sea salt, bonfire, nectarine syrup, and lime marmalade. The palate is taken on a flavourful journey – puffed rice, homemade rice pudding, and citrus, culminating in a whisper of Ferrero Rocher. The lingering taste of burning heather and smoked praline on the finish accentuates its excellent value. Maclean's Nose offers an indulgent Scotch experience that doesn't compromise quality for price.

Strathearn Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
Strathearn Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

One of Scotland's smallest distilleries, Strathearn brings an exceptionally hands-on approach to single malt production in Highland Perthshire. Owned by renowned independent bottler Douglas Laing, this tiny operation puts its priorities exactly where we like them: distinctive raw materials, patient fermentation, and careful distillation. At the heart of the process is Maris Otter malt, chosen for flavor over alcohol yield. Malted barley is carried into the distillery by hand and mixed with local Highland water in one of Scotland's smallest mash tuns. Fermentation runs a full 144 hours, or six days, before slow, deliberate distillation, with spirit cuts determined by taste rather than alcohol strength. The spirit is then filled into individually selected casks by hand. The single malt brings together whisky matured in ex-bourbon, virgin oak, and ex-sherry casks, combining Strathearn's meticulous production with Douglas Laing's extensive experience selecting and marrying Scotch whisky. Bottled at a substantial 50% ABV without chill filtration or added coloring, this is a compelling introduction to a diminutive Highland producer with serious ambitions. For malt lovers interested in the decisions that make a distillery distinctive, Strathearn offers plenty to get excited about.

Michel Couvreur "Blossoming Auld Sherried" Malt Whisky (700ml)
Michel Couvreur "Blossoming Auld Sherried" Malt Whisky (700ml)

The first time I tasted the Blossoming Auld Sherry was at a wonderful little bistro in Levernois outside of Beaune called Du Bord De L'Eau. After a wonderful meal at this exceptional casual restaurant, the director of Couvreur Jean Arnauld suggested we finish the night with a taste of something special from his exceptional collection. We could have taken the exceptionally expensive vintage offerings, but he recommended this special little treat. From the moment I put my nose to the glass I was transfixed. Of course, I know Couvreur's style and what to expect, but this was unlike anything I'd yet come across. It was truly like diving head first into the finest Sherry, but at 90 proof!!! The nose exhibits an intoxicating bouquet of plum preserves, old exotic wood, fresh leather, tobacco and the intricately carved wooden pipe to pack it. The palate is SO smooth. When someone says they like something "smooth," it's such a vague notion, and difficult quality to guarantee in a product, but THIS is what they're talking about. The density of the fruit remains on the palate, but it's pointed with wonderful dried citrus and sweet herbal notes. This is the real deal, and while not inexpensive, it out-performs its price point by a mile and then some. Imagine having a bottle of sherry that never goes bad, which you can sip by the ounce and clocks in at 45%! You'd never stop, so you know, you shouldn't. We're the exclusive source for this product in California and have been for some time. The current batch is just as delicious as ever, but offers even more powerful sherry character and an even darker color. There's still nothing else in the store like it. The legend returns.

It sings on the finish, with a parting crescendo of hazelnut, spice, cigar wrapper, and lengthy oak. *Number 9 in the 2019 Top 20* (SSB, Winter 2019)

Caol Ila 12 Year Old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky
92WE

A seductive brininess and waves of oily peat-reek greet the olfactory sense. The palate entry finds a surprisingly buttery-creamy leaning along with the peat-reek; at midpalate the flavor becomes concentrated, oily, malty sweet, and only moderately peaty. Ends on a sweet malty note. Builds from stage to stage, each phase being better than the last. *Best Buy* (PP)

Glenrothes 25 Year Old Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
Glenrothes 25 Year Old Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

Established in 1879 in the Speyside town of Rothes, The Glenrothes has built its identity around slow distillation and carefully managed maturation in sherry-seasoned oak. Its production begins with exceptionally soft spring water drawn from four private sources on the estate, naturally filtered through volcanic bedrock and gravity-fed from the surrounding hills. Unusually tall copper stills and a deliberately slow distillation rate maximize copper contact, reducing heavier compounds and establishing the refined spirit that underpins the distillery’s long-aged releases. Glenrothes commissions its oak casks to its own specifications and has them seasoned with sherry, maintaining control over the wood that will shape decades of maturation. The 25 brings these elements together after a minimum of a quarter-century in oak, allowing the spirit’s development over time to become as significant as the influence of the casks themselves. Bottled at 43% ABV, or 86 proof, it's the quintessential modern Glenrothes.
