One of Scotland's smallest distilleries, Strathearn brings an exceptionally hands-on approach to single malt production in Highland Perthshire. Owned by renowned independent bottler Douglas Laing, this tiny operation puts its priorities exactly where we like them: distinctive raw materials, patient fermentation, and careful distillation. At the heart of the process is Maris Otter malt, chosen for flavor over alcohol yield. Malted barley is carried into the distillery by hand and mixed with local Highland water in one of Scotland's smallest mash tuns. Fermentation runs a full 144 hours, or six days, before slow, deliberate distillation, with spirit cuts determined by taste rather than alcohol strength. The spirit is then filled into individually selected casks by hand. The single malt brings together whisky matured in ex-bourbon, virgin oak, and ex-sherry casks, combining Strathearn's meticulous production with Douglas Laing's extensive experience selecting and marrying Scotch whisky. Bottled at a substantial 50% ABV without chill filtration or added coloring, this is a compelling introduction to a diminutive Highland producer with serious ambitions. For malt lovers interested in the decisions that make a distillery distinctive, Strathearn offers plenty to get excited about.
