Bid on this bottle of 1980 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits-St-Georges "Les Vaucrains" (94JG). John Gilman: "... The bouquet is deep and profound, offering up a glorious mélange of red cherries, plums, cardamom, cloves, woodsmoke, mustard seed, earth and just a whisper of spicy wood. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and tangy, with lovely focus, no rough edges (it certainly does take a few years with top Nuits St. Georges to get to this point), and a very long, balanced, meltingly-tannic and brilliant finish. The 1980 Vaucrains seems just a bit more complete and velvety than the 1980 Cailles, at least at this stage. It would be fascinating to revisit both these wines again ten years down the road. In any event, the 1980 Vaucrains is just a superb bottle of wine, and given how well it is showing at age twenty-five, it is hard not to think that all top vintages of Chevillon’s “big three” need at least this much time to fully reach their apogees." Bid on this bottle of 1990 Domaine Leroy Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru "Les Boudots" (94RP, 94WS, 93BH). Wine Advocate: "Of the five outstanding offerings from the village of Nuits St.-Georges, the most exotic and flashy is the Nuits St.-Georges-Aux Boudots. The huge nose of roasted meats, pure black-raspberries, and herbs soars from the glass. Full-bodied, with layer upon layer of rich, unctuous Pinot fruit, this super-concentrated, voluptuously textured wine is so rich that the formidable tannin levels are nearly concealed. The finish goes on and on. (RP)" (10/1992)

Nuits-Saint-Georges gives its name to the Côte de Nuits, the northern half of Burgundy’s Côte d’Or. Maison Bertrand Ambroise’s 2021 Pinot Noir comes from this appellation, whose vineyards extend across both Nuits-Saint-Georges and neighboring Premeaux-Prissey, bringing two winegrowing communes under one geographical name.

Bid on this magnum of 2009 Domaine J-F Mugnier Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru "Clos de la Maréchale" (1.5L) (92BH, 92JG). Burghound: "I clearly misjudged this because while this is slightly riper than its 2010 counterpart with its mildly exotic yellow fruit aromas of honey, straw, peach and mango, there is genuinely excellent depth to the textured and opulent middle weight flavors that really coat the palate with dry extract. But it's the impressive length that really sets this apart from the 2010 because while this is a powerful vintage for the Clos de la Maréchale, it is the moderately firm acid spine that shapes the finish and imparts a real sense of focus. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2010 Domaine J-F Mugnier Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru "Clos de la Maréchale" (94JG, (91-93RP), 92BH, 92JM, 92VN). John Gilman: "Amazingly, the 2010 Clos de la Maréchale had little problems following on the heels of the magical troika of Bonnes-Mares, Amoureuses and Musigny in our sequence of tasting. This is the finest wine to date produced from this lovely vineayrds since Monsieur Mugnier took it back into the family fold, as the wine soars from the glass in a beautiful and vibrant bouquet of red and black cherries, pomegranate, fresh cocoa, a lovely base of soil, a touch of nutskin, vinesmoke and roses. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and very sappy at the core, with striking transparency, beautiful focus and balance and lovely grip on the ripely tannic, elegant and very long finish. A beautiful wine." (11/2011)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2009 Domaine J-F Mugnier Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru "Clos de la Maréchale" (92BH, 92RP, 92VN). Vinous: "Mugnier’s 2009 Nuits-Saint-Georges Clos de la Marechale was drop-dead gorgeous. Clos de la Marechale is another of my go-to wines, as it is readily available (by Burgundian standards) and rarely excessively marked up on restaurant lists. The 2009 was ripe, open and seductive. Although very much in the style of the year, the Clos de la Marechale also showed plenty of structure in support of the radiant, expressive fruit. Readers fortunate enough to own the 2009 can look forward to a broad and long drinking window. (AG)" (09/2013)

I probably have more experience with Bertrand Chevillon’s Chaignots bottling than with any of his other premier crus, as it is always the most accessible out of the blocks and for so many years, I would buy and drunk the Chaignots in its relative youth, to allow some of the more structured premier crus from the domaine to rest comfortably in my cellar. His 2023 version is another beautiful young wine, but this seems likely to be a bit more structured out of the blocks than some other recent vintages of Chaignots and will probably demand some bottle age before it can be drunk satisfactorily. The wine’s aromatic constellation is lovely, offering up scents of sweet dark berries, black cherries, coffee bean, dark soil tones, a nice touch of grilled meats, vanillin oak and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full and sappy at the core, with firm tannins, fine focus and balance and a long, soil-driven and promising finish. 2035-2080.
Bid on this 2-bottle tasting lot; including 1-bottle of 2009 Domaine Jerome Chezeaux Nuits-St-Georges and 1-bottle of 2009 Domaine l'Arlot Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru "Clos de l'Arlot" (94RP, 91JG). Of the 2009 Domaine l'Arlot Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru "Clos de l'Arlot", Wine Advocate writes: "The 2009 Nuits St. Georges Clos de l’Arlot has begun to shut down, even though it possesses tremendous depth. The warm, radiant personality of the vintage is present but the tannins have become much more prominent over the last year, always a good sign for potential longevity. The 2009 reveals notable freshness and vibrancy all the way through to the finish, where the wine becomes weightless and totally beautiful. (AG)" (04/2012)

The 2010 Nuits St. Georges Les Cailles comes across as cool, mineral infused and a bit reticent. With time in the glass the aromas and flavors begin to take shape. The Cailles remains a firm, structured Nuits that will require considerable patience, but its expressive fruit and gorgeous inner perfume bode very well for the future. Menthol, graphite, spices, tar and licorice wrap around the persistent, saline finish. (AG)

The 2024 Vaucrains from Monsieur Chevillon shares the beautiful sappiness and purity of fruit as all the other wines in the cellar here in this vintage, but it is quite a bit more black fruity out of the blocks than most of its brethren. The wine’s aromatic constellation offers up scents of cassis, black cherries, nutskin, venison, a complex foundation of dark soil tones, woodsmoke and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very sappy, with great soil signature and grip, ripe, firm tannins and a very, very long, complex and perfectly balanced finish. The inherent power of Vaucrains is beautifully synthesized into the elegance of the vintage here. This is going to be a very special wine. 2039-2100.

Clear bright crimson. The bouquet started out similar but then developed a further burst of red fruit with maybe a touch of blood orange. A rich dark fruit behind with a more savoury character, a fine tensile strength despite its Rousseau discretion, and very good length. Tasted Nov 2023.

Wine Spectator: "A supple red, saturated with black cherry, blackberry, tar and mineral flavors. Dusty tannins coat the gums and compact the finish a little, yet this feels balanced, and the fruit returns in the end. Best from 2027 through 2042." (04/2025)

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2021 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits-St-Georges Vieilles Vignes ((89-91BH), (89-91RP), 90JG). Wine Advocate: "Aromas of red berries, orange zest and rose petals introduce the 2021 Nuits-Saint-Georges Vieilles Vignes, a medium-bodied, fleshy and perfumed wine with melting tannins and a saline finish. It's an especially charming, fragrant rendition of this perennially reliable cuvée. (WK)" (01/2023)

Such a beautiful Nuits-Saint-Georges from the Vosne-Romanee side of the appellation, where you often get this kind of elegance and silkiness in good vintages. Excellent concentration, too, and a long, graceful finish complete this beauty. Drink or hold.

Three barrels made. A noble deep purple colour. A very alluring deep dark fruit in excellent balance. The richness of the deep plum and red berry fruit is entirely contained within the precise tannic structure. Fine length. A very complete wine without too much power. Drink from 2032-2038. Tasted Nov 2025.

The 2024 Chaignots chez Chevillon is quite black fruity in personality this year and also beautifully sappy. The wine’s aromatic constellation reveals a lovely blend of plums, sweet dark berries, woodsmoke, a fine base of soil, pigeon, vanillin oak and a pungent topnote of violets. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and sappy, with a great core of fruit, fine soil signature, tangy acids and a very long, ripely tannic and seamlessly balanced finish. Fine juice. 2037-2085.

Domaine Chevillon’s 2024 Nuits “Vieilles Vignes” is going to be an absolutely stellar villages level bottling this year. The bouquet is deep, pure and beautifully sappy in profile, hopping from the glass in a mix of black cherries, sweet dark berries, a gorgeous base of soil, gamebird, dark chocolate and a deft touch of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, precise and very deep at the core, with great purity of fruit, superb soil undertow and grip, fine-grained tannins and a long, impeccably balanced and nascently complex finish. This is going to be excellent villages. 2034-2080.

Smoked bacon, Asian spices, and black cherries are found in the mouth-watering aromatics of the 2002 Nuits-St.-Georges Les Cailles. Awesomely expansive, armed with terrific mouth-feel, it slathers the taster’s palate with cassis liqueur, bacon, and blackberries. This velvety-textured wine is pure, concentrated, and boasts a prolonged finish. (PR)
Pre-Arrival
The Chevillon 2005 Nuits-St.-Georges Les Chaignots boasts a gorgeous aroma of ripe blackberry and red currant with piquant notes of walnut oil, and marrowy meatiness resembling reduced, faintly caramelized pan juices. In the mouth, it displays amazing depth of meat and mineral elements along with persistently tart, juicy and vivid blackberry and red currant. Herbal and fruit pit notes lend a medicinal aspect to the flavors – and who wouldn’t want this prescription?! The counterpoint of creaminess of texture with persistent brightness, and of meaty depth with high-toned inner-mouth perfume is striking, and the finish – showcasing ultra-fine tannins – welds together fruit, meat, and mineral with perfect clarity and seamlessness. If further proof were needed that the Chevillons are in a class by themselves among the major Nuits-St.-Georges landholders, they certainly delivered it this year. Like so many other vintners, they reported backing off on pigeage this year – and heaven knows, the resultant wines don’t lack for concentration. Their Bourgogne Passetoutgrain, Bourgogne, and Nuits-St.-Georges Les Perrieres had all just been sulfured and filtered, so Bertrand Chevillon declined to show them. He was as yet noncommittal, however, about when the other wines would be bottled, although this would probably continue through Spring, and be accompanied by the estate’s usual light filtration.(DS)
A lovely mid purple. This has a more voluptuous layer of fruit to it. A liquid deep raspberry at the front of the palate, firmer tannins behind, fair concentration and length. A very seductive long aftertaste. Drink from 2033-2040. Tasted Nov 2024.

The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Village is a blend of several vineyards that offer homogeneous ripeness but on different soils. It has quite an earthy, sous-bois tinged bouquet that is very well defined, the 60% whole bunches nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with a tart opening, and the 10% new oak lends discreet lift toward a persistent finish spiced with a dash of black pepper. Excellent. (NM)

Mid crimson red, a cleaner purer fruit to my taste. Not the garrigue that Etienne Grivot talks of for Roncière but just a pure red fruit on the nose, then maybe a herbal touch at the back. Good tension at the back and a lovely aftertaste. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted Nov 2025.
Pre-Arrival
The 2024 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru was showing just a little more reduction on the nose compared to the other Premier Crus but you can already see very attractive dark berry fruit, a tangible sense of mineralité. The palate is quite succulent on the entry, a tad more weight than the Les Perrières, a lovely velvety roundness on the seductive finish. This has a melted quality.(NM)

Tasted at the Chevillon “Vaucrains” vertical in London. The 2003 has a typically (for the vintage) ripe, almost New World, Martinborough-like nose with macerated dark cherries and just a touch of burnt match. The palate is well balanced and sinewy, robust and rather bold tannins, thick and a little brawny perhaps but it has a very correct, tannic finish that is completely in synch with the layers of ripe fruit. Give this time: it might surprise a few that wrote off the vintage although it is atypical of Chevillon’s style. (NM)

A pretty red, boasting rose, sandalwood, black cherry, blackberry and woodsy, gamy notes backed by a spine of beefy tannins. Remains bright and focused, ending with a complex aftertaste of fruit, spice and woodsy elements. Best from 2025 through 2043.
Pre-Arrival
A lighter crimson colour. There is some weight of ripe fruit on the nose, and significantly more on the palate than the village wines, with a depth of dark strawberry and raspberry. Adequate acidity and well tamed tannins supply the structure. Good length to complete the deal. Drink from 2030-2036. Tasted Nov 2024.
Pre-Arrival
More ruby than crimson. The fruit is a little more restrained, but perhaps fresher than the Thorey, more in raspberry and cherry. This continues on a well-rounded palate with just a little youthful bitterness to add a level of tension. Will take a little longer to come round. Drink from 2031-2038. Tasted Nov 2024.
Pre-Arrival
Note: from a parcel of vines in Flagey opposite the Clos de Vougeot. A slightly riper and more deeply pitched nose also features mostly red berry aromas cut with evident earth nuances. There is slightly better volume if not necessarily better density to the attractively textured flavors that offer just a bit more refinement on the youthfully austere bitter pit fruit-inflected finale. This too should drink well young.
Mid purple, a note of coffee torrefaction is sticking out of the red fruit beneath. Not just a question of the glass because it reappears on the palate. Unusual style at the finish though just right at the end some Nuits character emerges. I think the coffee may be somehow an iteration of the stems. Retasted at the end, the fruit has come right up and eaten the coffee. Much livelier red fruit, then the stems which remain quite prominent. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted Nov 2025.
Lush, juicy and seductive, this red features blackberry, black currant, blueberry, iron and earth aromas and flavors. Quickly tightens up courtesy of the solid structure, with fine promise for its evolution. Offers terrific balance and length. Best from 2029 through 2047.—B.S.

The 2023 Côteaux Bourguignon La Croix Blanche has a pretty bouquet of red cherries and bergamot scents, the Pinot more expressive than the Gamay (30%). The palate is well balanced with crisp redcurrant and cranberry fruit, and nicely poised on the crunchy finish. This is worth seeking out.(NM)

A selection of old vines, including one plot from 1904 in Les Chouillets. Very dense rich purple black, hugely dense, and much cleaner. Magical and immense. Almost too much however on the palate, very ripe, coulis de framboise with the tannins sticking out a little bit. Great potential if eventually this comes down on the right side of the ripeness line. Hard to call.
