Domaine Guillaume Curveux Macon Fuisse

Chiseled golden apple frolics with brioche and bruised yellow pear on the nose that is accented by baby's breath. Stony minerality infuses the palate that brings in bread dough and lemon peel. This wine's citrus lift would complement shrimp cocktail, sushi and grilled asparagus.(AC)

Domaine Guillaume Curveux Pouilly Fuisse 1er Cru "Les Vignes Blanches"
2024 Domaine Guillaume Curveux Pouilly Fuisse 1er Cru "Les Vignes Blanches"

When I first tasted the Vignes Blanches from Curveux, I wrote down in my notes: "I can't decide if Premier Cru Pouilly-Fuissé of this quality shouldn't be possible at this price, or if I'm just overzealous in my first week on the job." Lo and behold, over a month, and half-a-hundred Pouilly-Fuissés later, I still haven't tasted one that struck me like this bottle did. It's a lush and doughy and superbly textured, with wonderful lift from the always-energetic 2024 vintage. A wine that you taste and are certain you’ll have to pay an arm and a leg to enjoy it, and then celebrate with a second bottle when you find out it’s under $30!

Domaine Ramonet Meursault 1er Cru "Blagny"
2023 Domaine Ramonet Meursault 1er Cru "Blagny"

Pierre Ramonet arrived in Chassagne-Montrachet in the late 1920s with, as the family tells it, a knapsack and not much else, bought grapes and made wine until he could afford vines, and in 1934 made his first purchase in Les Ruchottes, the premier cru that would make his name. Frank Schoonmaker found him early and sent the wines to America, and Pierre never stopped buying: Bâtard and Bienvenues from Domaine Coquet in the 1950s, and in 1978, at 72, a quarter hectare of Montrachet paid for with his savings. He died in 1994 at 88, having handed the work to his grandsons Noël and Jean-Claude a decade earlier. Since 2013 the labels have read Jean-Claude Ramonet, and Jean-Claude now runs the domaine with his daughter Anne-France. The holdings are what every white Burgundy lover dreams about: Montrachet, Bâtard, Bienvenues and a sliver of Chevalier, plus Ruchottes, Caillerets, Morgeot, Boudriotte, Vergers and Chaumées in Chassagne, with Saint-Aubin and Puligny alongside. The cellar is old-fashioned and unhurried, with fermentation on native yeasts and 12 to 15 months in barrel, new oak kept to a modest share even for the grands crus. Decanter calls Ramonet one of the best white wine producers on the planet, and we’re not inclined to argue: these are the Chassagnes we buy whenever we can, with the Ruchottes and the Morgeot the ones that turn up most often on our own shelves.

The 2024 Chassagne-Montrachet Village is a blend of seven lieux-dits with one-third from Morgeots, all touching Grand Crus. It has a touch of oyster shell on the nose that combines deftly with the citrus fruit. Fine delineation and focus. Bid on this bottle of 1996 Etienne Sauzet Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru "Champs Canet" (93RP, 92ST, 90BH). Wine Advocate: "The Puligny-Montrachet Les Champs-Canet possesses an intense, deeply rich, broad, and white peach-scented nose. Its displays a lace-like, elegant, and highly-defined, yet expansive and powerful medium-to-full-bodied character. Leesy notes, together with minerals, pears, and sweet oak are found in this exciting and seductive wine. I suggest drinking it between 2002 and 2007. Knockout grand cru aromas of macerated berries, licorice, jasmine, animal fur, tar and exotic baking spices; a great example of Bonnes-Mares, showing both the floral and animal aspects of the cru. Fills the mouth with sappy sucrosity, lifted by a strong floral element. A wine of great energy, finishing with firm but sweet tannins. Makes a strong argument that great grand cru Burgundy can be made at a yield of 42 hectoliters per hectare. (ST)" (03/2002)

Henri Jayer Echezeaux Grand Cru
1984 Henri Jayer Echezeaux Grand Cru

Bid on this bottle of 1984 Henri Jayer Echezeaux Grand Cru. According to Jasper Morris, MW: "Henri Jayer's personal philosophy begun with the observation that 'wine must not be brought up in cotton-wool' and 'let nature go'. He was adamant that one cannot replace artificially elements in a wine which are absent at the start. Tinkering with musts and wine to adjust the results for inadequate fruit is not the way to achieve quality. Jayer channeled his energy and expertise in producing top-class grapes to vinify from vines that are more than 50 years old. Jayer's vinification methods were not particularly unusual but they reminded us that 'wine is for pleasure so one seeks as perfect an equilibrium as possible.'"

Of the 1996 Frédéric Magnien Morey-St-Denis "Les Herbuottes", Antonio Galloni writes writes: "Frederic Magnien bottles two lines; the Domaine Michel Magnien range is made predominantly from estate-owned grapes, although a few wines include purchased fruit as well. Magnien also issues a negociant label, Maison Frederic Magnien, exclusively from purchased grapes. If that sounds confusing, welcome to Burgundy! In layman’s terms the Domaine bottlings carry a black label, the Maison wines carry a white label...In general the Maison wines tend to emphasize a more red expression of fruit, while the Domaine wines are more towards the blue/black end of the spectrum."

Bid on this bottle of 1989 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Montrachet Grand Cru (99RP, 98WS, 95JG, 95VN). Wine Advocate: "Not surprisingly, this is another awesome example from the Domaine de la Romanee-Conti. If pure, honeyed thickness and glycerin are what you are looking for, there is not a more concentrated Chardonnay produced in the world. The only thing I have ever seen from the new world that approaches a wine such as this in nectar-like richness were the 1978 and 1980 Chalone, but that winery has now resorted to making much lighter, more commercially-oriented products. There is nothing commercial about this 1989 Montrachet. ...here is a bottle that will offer an awesome nose of honeyed, buttery, apple fruit, intertwined with aromas of smoked nuts and toasty new oak. In the mouth, it is almost greasy because of its extraordinary viscosity, thickness, and richness... (RP)" (02/1992)

Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits-St-Georges "Les Vaucrains"
1980 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits-St-Georges "Les Vaucrains"

Bid on this bottle of 1980 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits-St-Georges "Les Vaucrains" (94JG). John Gilman: "... The bouquet is deep and profound, offering up a glorious mélange of red cherries, plums, cardamom, cloves, woodsmoke, mustard seed, earth and just a whisper of spicy wood. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and tangy, with lovely focus, no rough edges (it certainly does take a few years with top Nuits St. Georges to get to this point), and a very long, balanced, meltingly-tannic and brilliant finish. The 1980 Vaucrains seems just a bit more complete and velvety than the 1980 Cailles, at least at this stage. It would be fascinating to revisit both these wines again ten years down the road. In any event, the 1980 Vaucrains is just a superb bottle of wine, and given how well it is showing at age twenty-five, it is hard not to think that all top vintages of Chevillon’s “big three” need at least this much time to fully reach their apogees." Bid on this bottle of 1990 Domaine Emmanuel Rouget Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "Cros Parantoux" (97VN, 95RP, 94BH). Vinous: "One taste of Emmanuel Rouget’s 1990 Vosne-Romanée Cros Parantoux is all it takes to completely stop the conversation at the table. How can a wine be so beautiful? Ethereal and weightless on the palate, yet with considerable depth, the 1990 captures the essence of what makes Pinot Noir and Burgundy so compelling. Sweet floral notes wrap around an eternal, silky finish that is pure finesse. It’s hard to see the 1990 improving much from here although it will certainly hold for some time. Still, my preference would be to drink it sooner rather than later. (AG)" (04/2015)

Wine Advocate: "The Richebourg was an explosive wine with an earthy, cinnamon, gingery, soy sauce aroma backed up with the intense smell of plums and toasty new oak. Extremely rich, full bodied, and awesomely proportioned, this heroic wine should be drunk from the late nineties through the first two decades of the twenty-first century. It seems bigger, fuller, and more powerful than even the celestial 1985. Bid on this bottle of 1985 Domaine René Engel Clos Vougeot Grand Cru (96RP). Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the Domaine Engel tasting in London, the 1985 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru was a brilliant mature Burgundy at its peak. It has a fragrant and disarmingly pure bouquet with red plum, orange rind, minerals and rose petal aromas that almost "swarm" towards you. The palate is very well structured with black rather than red fruit infused with subtle marmalade and sour cherry notes. It is blessed with palpable mineralité, the terroir coming through uninhibited. What a fabulous mature Clos Vougeot from the late Philippe Engel, about as good as this medieval grand cru gets. This is impressive as hell and while not an elegant or especially sophisticated wine, it is approachable now and one that will live for many years to come, indeed it has not yet quite reached its full potential, at least not for my taste. As such, I would be inclined to let it continue to age for another 3 to 5 years or so though if you do decide to open a bottle now, be sure to give it 30 minutes in a decanter first. John Gilman: " I really enjoyed the 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin from Domaine Méo-Camuzet this year, as this is an archetypical synthesis of the village and the vintage. The wine is deep and nicely sappy on the nose, delivering a lovely blend of red and black cherries, chocolate, a touch of meatiness, woodsmoke, a fine base of soil tones and just a hint of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, focused and very nicely structured, with a very good core of fruit, lovely focus and grip and impressive backend energy on the long and complex finish. 1995 Maison Leroy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "Les Chaumes"

Bid on this bottle of 1995 Maison Leroy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "Les Chaumes". The legendary Lalou Bize-Leroy runs three separate enterprises under her family's storied name. Founded in 1868, Maison Leroy is the négociant arm of the business which purchases wines from top domaines and ages them in house for later release. Maison Leroy's fabled collection of older wines dates back to the 1919 vintage.

Maison Leroy Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Les Folatières"
1996 Maison Leroy Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Les Folatières"

Bid on this bottle of 1996 Maison Leroy Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Les Folatières". Robert M. Parker writes: “I have said it so many times that it may seem redundant, but if you missed it in my 1990 tome, Burgundy, Lalou Bize-Leroy stands virtually alone at the top of Burgundy’s quality hierarchy. Because she is a perfectionist, and because she has had the courage to produce wines from low yields and bottle them naturally, without fining or filtration, she has been scorned by many Burgundy negociants, and even by the proprietors of other top domaines. Not only are they jealous, they are frightened of Bize-Leroy because they fear increasing pressure for lower yields and bio-dynamic farming. Anyone who loves great Burgundy, must realize that her wines embarrass much of what is produced in Burgundy.”

Domaine Roulot Meursault "À Mon Plaisir - Clos du Haut Tesson"
2015 Domaine Roulot Meursault "À Mon Plaisir - Clos du Haut Tesson"

Bid on this bottle of 2015 Domaine Roulot Meursault "À Mon Plaisir - Clos du Haut Tesson" ((90-92BH), 92JG, 91VN). Burghound: "Ripe, fresh and cool aromas feature notes of hazelnut, pear and white peach along with plenty of floral and spice nuances. There is notably more volume if a bit less refinement to the rich and full-bodied flavors that coat the palate with sap while delivering outstanding depth and length on the sleek and balanced finish that really fans out. A most impressive villages. " (06/2017)

Louis Latour Montrachet Grand Cru
1989 Louis Latour Montrachet Grand Cru

Bid on this bottle of 1989 Louis Latour Montrachet Grand Cru (96RP). Wine Advocate: "Latour's 1989 Montrachet is the most backward of his 1989 whites. While the bouquet is unforthcoming, the wine is loaded with a steely acidity, massive richness, and possesses a mind-blowing finish. It tastes like eau de vie of buttered apples and liquid popcorn. Drink it between 1996-2010. This is an outstanding white burgundy by any standard of measurement. Don't miss it! (RP)" (02/1992)

Serafin Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes
1990 Serafin Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes

Bid on this bottle of 1990 Serafin Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes. Wine Advocate: "Many people in Burgundy believe Serafin is producing the finest wines in Gevrey-Chambertin. He continues to lower his yields, and while he never did much filtering, in 1990 he decided to eliminate it. His 1990s are all concentrated, backward, dense wines that will require some patience. The Gevrey-Chambertin actually comes from the premier cru vineyard Les Corbeaux, but he did not register his holdings in time for the name to appear on the label. In 1991 the words Les Corbeaux will be included in the wine's name. The softest wine of his 1990 offerings, this dark-colored wine exhibits a sweet perfume of black fruits and damp earth. In the mouth, it is medium-bodied, with gorgeous fruit extraction, soft tannins, and a moderately long, round finish. (RP)" (10/1992)

Domaine Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
2024 Domaine Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

The 2024 ranks among the best vintages of Leflaive's Bâtard I have tasted. There is a lovely freshness without sacrificing the richness that is the charm of a proper Bâtard. The wine surprises with profuse aromas of ripe pear, acacia flower, chalk and spice; the texture is dense but very fine, bringing impressive persistence to the finish. The wine is completely, convincingly delicious. The difficult 2024 vintage required extensive sorting, but the team did what was necessary to produce a truly memorable result.

A perfumed and highly expressive nose freely proffers its aromas of the essence of white fleshed fruit, green apple, wet stone, petrol and a plethora of floral elements. There is again excellent mid-palate density to the sappy and powerful medium-bodied flavors that possess an almost aggressive minerality on the superbly long finale. This is a knockout and it's extremely rare to find this level of quality at the villages-level - if you can find it, buy it.

Domaine Leflaive Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
2024 Domaine Leflaive Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

As is often the case when young, the nose closely resembles that of the Pucelles with just a bit more layering. By contrast, there is definitely more size, weight and power to the bigger-bodied still yet refined and wonderfully energetic flavors that coat the palate with dry extract while delivering outstanding persistence on the compact, balanced and Zen-like finale. This is gorgeous and equally classy though it's also very much a buy and forget you own it wine. *Don't miss!*

Once again there is a coolness to the airy, even wafting, nose of wet stone, citrus and exotic tea. The sleek, intense and beautifully delineated, even chiseled, flavors brim with minerality on the lilting, focused, balanced and lightly austere finale. Villages-level Meursault doesn't get a lot better and this is pretty much textbook Tillets. *Outstanding* *Top Value*
