The 2018 Cristal opens a new chapter for Roederer. The Cristal estate is composed of 45 parcels. In better vintages, most of the 45 parcels are used for the blend. The 2018 vintage brought with it elevated ripeness and generally low acids. Longtime Chef de Caves Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon was forced to cast his gaze wider, to look for parcels that offered a touch of freshness. Lécaillon expanded his palette to 57 parcels. The result is a Cristal unlike any other I have tasted. Orchard fruit, dried flowers, spice, chalk and herbs are some of the many notes that take shape in the glass. Floral and savory overtones are quite distinctive. Lécaillon reduced oak ferments, racked very quickly after fermentation and used all his best Chardonnay lots for Cristal, so much so that there is no Blanc de Blancs. He bottled earlier than normal and chose a crown capsule with a liner that allows less oxygen transfer than the norm here. Taken together, those choices paid off handsomely. In tasting, the 2018 is positively stunning. Its linear energy and brilliance are a bit reminiscent of the 2014, but its flavor profile is completely different from any Cristal I can remember tasting. Dosage is 7 grams per liter. (AG) 98+

A very structure Cristal with aromas of white pepper, bread dough, pie crust, pear tart and a hint of flint. Full-bodied with bitter grapefruit, apricot and lemon flavors. The bubbles turn fine and driving, giving it length and intensity. From organically grown grapes. Will age nicely.

The newly released 2018 vintage of Cristal is still a very young wine and reminds me quite strongly right now of the 2009 Cristal when it was first released. The wine this year is composed from a cépages of fifty-seven percent pinot noir and forty-three percent chardonnay. Twenty-eight percent of the vins clairs this year were barrel fermented, and as always, none went through malolactic fermentation. The wine was disgorged after six years aging sur latte and finished with a dosage of seven grams per liter. The bouquet is bright, precise and youthfully complex, wafting from the glass in a mix of apple, white peach, almond, brioche, a complex base of chalky soil tones, just a whisper of oak influence and a topnote of lemon zest. On the palate the wine is deep, pure and full-bodied, with a superb core of fruit, fine soil inflection and grip, supremely elegant mousse and a long, seamlessly balanced and classy finish. This is still a puppy and truly deserves some extended hibernation time to allow its secondary layer of complexity to start to emerge. That said, it is certainly not hard to drink in its youth!

Notes

The ripe harvest of 2018 had chef de cave Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon searching for extra freshness- and he found it in some parcels of vines that have never been in Cristal before. This all estate, all organic blend of 57% Pinot Noir and 43% of Chardonnay was made without malolactic, 72% in stainless steel and 28% in wood. It is a very generous style of Cristal, with plenty of text book minerality. -Gary Westby, K&L
