Truffle, violet, ripe wild berry and dark spice aromas mingle with a whiff of new leather on the outrageously gorgeous Baricci 2021 Brunello Montosoli. From one of the pioneering estates and always one of the best wines in the denomination, the 2021 is exceptional, delivering layers of flavors including succulent Morello cherry, licorice, blood orange, black raspberry and ground clove accompanied by a backbone of refined, tightly woven tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it lifted and balanced. (KO)

Only made in top vintages, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino Riserva Montosoli opens with a darker, more compact aromatic profile of blackberries, cherry, licorice, and savory spice. Medium to full-bodied, it carries a vibrant spine of acidity and a weightless sense of intensity, with youthful tannins that build in structure through the finish. It was aged 3.5 years in tonneaux. Tasted over the course of several days, it continued to improve and held strong even when open for a little over a week. Give this time and drink it over the next two decades. This is the fifth Riserva they have ever produced, with previous vintages from 2010, 2012, 2015, and 2016. The next release will be from 2022. (AF)

The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli is darkly wrapped up in its youthful state. Swirling unlocks depths of dried black cherry, dusty rose, crushed stone, violet pastille and clove. It's round and soothing on the palate, with perfumed red berry fruit, mineral tones and textures of pure silk. This displays remarkable balance through the raspberry-tinged finish, which is long and structured but still fresh. The 2021 is fantastic and harmonious throughout. (EG)

This traditionally minded estate is located in the northern Montosoli area of Montalcino, and it shows through in the wine, which offers up a brighter, lighter and more citrussy style than most Rossos. Orange zest, red cherries, pomegranate and redcurrant on the nose segue into a crisp, refreshingly tangy palate that has a certain delicacy and undeniable charm, while simultaneously impressing with a grippy, mineral undertow. The 2021 vintage is a modern legend, and this specific bottle has already achieved mythical status with a perfect 100-point score. This is the definition of Montosoli elegance. It does not rely on heavy extraction or new oak; it seduces you with purity. The nose is mesmerizing, offering soaring aromas of truffle, violet pastille, ripe wild berries, and new leather, all lifted by a distinct, dusty minerality. On the palate, it features "textures of pure silk." It is medium-bodied but intense, with ultra-fine tannins that coat the mouth without ever feeling aggressive. It is flawless balance—a wine that feels weightless yet persists on the palate for minutes. A true masterpiece.

Notes

The 2021 Baricci Brunello di Montalcino is a breathtaking release from the north-side "Grand Cru" of Montosoli, widely considered one of the absolute stars of an exceptional vintage. On the nose, it is strikingly complex and "outrageously gorgeous," opening with a perfume of wild berries, violets, and rose petals layered with deep notes of new leather, forest floor, and dark spices. The palate is characterized by its remarkable verticality and "pure silk" texture, where concentrated red berry and black cherry fruit are perfectly balanced by a savory, crushed-stone minerality and a vibrant, cooling acidity. It finishes with immense length and structural harmony, marked by firm but ultra-polished tannins and lingering echoes of raspberry and clove. This is a profound and classic Brunello that manages to feel weightless despite its significant depth, representing a benchmark for the Montosoli hill.
