Anthem's tightly coiled, concentrated 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard recalls the site's rocky soils in its hints of crushed stones on the nose, backed by black cherries, sage, cedar and dried spices. It's full-bodied and dense, possesses plenty in reserve for the long haul and boasts a long, tannic finish. Anthem Wines are made under the supervision of winemaker Jeff Ames, who lives on the property. The bottling Ames produces for Anthem from Beckstoffer's Las Piedras Vineyard in western St. Helena is a terrific wine at what passes for a fair price these days. (JC)

The 2021 Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from Anthem Cellars is fantastic in this vintage. It opens with captivating aromas of ripe dark currants, crème de cassis, mocha, spring flowers, spices, dried herbs, and hints of earthy gravel all perfectly balanced in the glass. On the palate, it reveals a rich, opulent texture, with layers of ripe dark fruits, sweet spices, and mocha unfolding gracefully toward a long, velvety finish. Already drinking beautifully, this wine is poised to develop even greater complexity over the next decade. Winemaker Jeff Ames has crafted another remarkable wine for Anthem Cellars that is impressive in its youth, yet also has the potential to evolve gracefully over the next 10 to 20 years. (JD)

Coming from a great vineyard in St. Helena and aged 18 months in 95% new French oak, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard reveals red and black fruits, chocolate, smoked tobacco, and spicy wood notes. Full-bodied and rich on the palate, with a broad, layered mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish, it will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and will have 20-25+ years of overall longevity.

Notes

An immense wine from the famed Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard in St. Helena. This vineyard sits on extremely gravelly soils, an alluvial fan of rocks washed down from Spring Mountain. Anthem's 2021 bottling is made entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon Clone 337. The wine was aged in top quality Daranjou and Taransaud oak barrels for 18 months, bottled unfined and unfiltered, before another 20 months resting in bottle before release. The wines are made by cult winemaker Jeff Ames.
