A dense, layered and well-built Cornas with aromas of cassis, plums, lychees, gunpowder and dried flowers. It's medium-bodied with fine, firm tannins. So much texture with a freshness at the center. Vivid core of berries with a solid frame of tannins coating the palate. It's harmonious and flavorful, with a lift of pepper. Impressive concentration for the vintage.

The 2021 Cornas Renaissance checks in at 12.3% alcohol and is a charming, forward effort offering medium-bodied aromas and flavors of ripe red and blue fruits, pepper, and sappy herbs. It's balanced and has ripe tannins as well as the more focused texture of the vintage. Give it a year or two and enjoy over the following decade. I was thrilled to be able to retaste the 2020s during my visit with Pierre-Marie Clape, and it’s safe to say I underrated these last year. They’ve have morphed into heavenly wines that are unquestionably in the same league as the estate 2010s, 2018s, and 2019s. The 2021s here have pure, classic, old school-like profiles with more moderate concentration and depth, but good balance as well as length. Harkening back to wines from the 1980s, they’re already approachable yet should have 10-15 years of interesting drinking.

Saturated magenta. Expansive aromas of black and blue fruits, licorice, olive and black pepper show fine clarity and building florality. Smoky and energetic in the mouth, offering juicy blackberry, cherry and baking spice flavors that slowly deepen through the back half. Becomes sweeter on the long, focused finish, which features grippy tannins and lingering floral and exotic spice notes. (NG)

Notes

John Livingstone Learmonth The Cradle of the Rhone: "(the blend, bottling Nov 2023) bright red; the nose has an easy curve, raspberry with rocks, dustiness, violet and notably white pepper. The palate is fluid on opening, streams along nicely, is linear, mobile, nicely loose, peppery with late vegetal thrust, rocky firmness on the finish where the tannins need to calm. It has a curvy-spice close. From 2026. 2045-47 July 2023."
