The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Clos de la Maltroie 1er Cru is actually more backward on the nose compared to the Village Cru, tightly coiled with mineral-driven, malic fruit. The palate is well balanced with neatly integrated oak on the entry. Fresh and saline, there’s ample grip toward the finish, with just a touch of grilled walnut and fine length. Excellent. Tasted at merchants' 2022 Burgundy tastings in London. (NM)

An attractive mid lemon. Slightly yellower fruit. Good acidity with a leaner style of fruit. Maltroie rarely shines in its youth, and this is again in the more austere style. Drink from 2027-2032.

Note: from a .94 ha parcel of 25+ year old vines, of which .52 ha is planted to chardonnay in Clos de la Maltroie and Les Places. Here too there is a smoky component subtly suffusing the ever-so-vaguely exotic aromas of white peach, citrus confit and rosemary oil. There is good vibrancy and a lovely texture to the medium-bodied flavors that are also not particularly dense (though by no means dilute), all wrapped in a rich, youthfully austere and bitter zest-inflected finale that is agreeably dry. This could easily be enjoyed young or cellared for 5-ish or so years first.

A little spicier than the village Chassagne and really sustained on the palate. Stone dust lays over ripe, fresh citrus but there’s spice on the palate, too. Rich, creamy, satisfying and still so fresh. (JH)

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "Largest parcel of the domaine with almost 1 hectare of 3 different vine ages, plus some pinot. Took out half of the young (2012) vines in 2020 there was a problem with the 161-49 root-stock here. There’s still no real solution, certainly with so many consecutive hot vintage and vines planted in drier places.A little more airy style to this nose, faintly floral. Ooh – that’s beautiful in the mouth – crystalline and with wonderful energy. The width of this finish extending much further and holding strongly – even blind, that’s a big step up. Excellent wine!"
