From a 0.6ha parcel of Cazetiers that lies down-slope from the Bruno Clair holding. The gentle fermentation and ageing in used casks produces a wine with clear, pure fruit, showing a slightly darker character and an important mineral/earthy note. On the palate, there is more flesh and texture than the village offering, but the wine is still silky and approachable. (CC)

Wafting from the glass with scents of sweet berry fruit, smoked meats, rich soil tones, peonies and mandarin orange, Rousseau's 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, with fine depth at the core, lively acids and velvety structuring tannins. This is shaping up nicely. Cyrielle Rousseau told me that she began picking on September 12, with yields averaging out at around 35 hectoliters per hectare, and that this is the second vintage to deliver maturities sufficiently elevated that the domaine didn't chaptalize a single cuvée. While Rousseau is never one to show all her cards, she did admit to liking 2019, saying that "they're wines that evoke emotions—more so than 2018." Deep, vibrant and concentrated, with ethereal bouquets and seamless structure, I'm inclined to think that—taken as a whole—this is in fact Rousseau's finest vintage since 2012 or even 2010, though of course the most successful cuvées in 2016 and 2015 might be cited to challenge that assertion in detail. In any case, it's a superb set of wines that will be worth tracking down even in today's overheated Burgundy market. While preparing this report, I also revisited some of the domaine's 2017s in my US office, and they showed well, too—even if the communal Gevrey-Chambertin struck me as rather more overtly oaky than I remembered it from barrel, or that one is indeed accustomed to expect at this stylistically restrained address. The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru is darker in color than the Lavaux Saint-Jacques. The bouquet is more upfront and bold, touches of blueberry joining shimmering red fruit that is very well defined and becomes increasingly floral. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky entry. This is very cohesive, offering lithe tannins and a judicious sprinkling of brown spices toward the persistent finish. Give it three or four years in bottle. (NM)

Deeply pitched aromas of poached plum, newly turned earth, game and forest floor precede sleek, intense, well-detailed and powerful medium weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the beautifully long finish. This slightly more structured beauty isn't as refined as the Lavaut St. Jacques but there is more here.

Notes

92-96pts Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "Intense deep colour, with a classic Cazetiers mineral nose. In a ripe register. Cyrielle says it was a holy terror last week like her 4 year old nephew Gabin, an evocative image even without having met Gabin. This is no more powerful in alcohol level than their Lavaux St-Jacques but shows at least as much ripeness. Happily, it still retains a lively Cazetiers feel behind. The oak is well integrated, this Cazetiers is sensual in the extreme. Tasted: October 2020."
