This newly released vintage is a profound wine that will take time to show its full potential. At first glance it is relatively closed, and the texture is not very expressive. But with time in the glass, it opens to display ripe plummy fruit alongside earth, smoke and spice notes. It is not astringent, yet powerful and tannic; ripe, but not fruity – almost brooding. Give this five to 10 years in your cellar, and you will own an impressive wine. (CC)

This vineyard, close to the top of the steep chalk hill in Ay, is a 9.9-acre monopole assembled by Jacques Bollinger in the early 1930s. The pinot noir for this red wine comes from a 2-acre parcel facing southeast. This is the first vintage in which Gilles Descôtes included whole bunches in the fermentation, which, combined with the active limestone acidity, he hopes will enhance the wine’s structure for aging. On release, its a wine of luscious elegance, with delicate berry savor and umami richness. “It’s a wine that comes from the earth, that’s been warmed by the sun,” said NYC-based journalist Jamal Rayyis. “The fruit is ripe and softens the acidity.” A chic beauty, this wine has a Wow factor that is hard to overstate.

Complex nose of red fruit with an autumnal touch of underbrush, plus a spicy element that expands and expands as the wine aerates. An impressively ripe pinot noir for this northerly location, thanks to the startling tannin structure that gives this a lot of power at the fresh finish. Drink or hold.

Notes

From a steep hillside vineyard in Aÿ, this still Pinot Noir is bottled under the Coteaux Champenois appellation rather than as sparkling Champagne. La Côte aux Enfants reflects Bollinger's long-standing commitment to red-wine production in a region best known for its bubbles.
