Wine Advocate

Reviewed January 2021
After the more reserved Les Cailles, I was taken aback by the expressiveness of Chevillon's exquisite 2019 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Saint-Georges. Bursting with aromas of wild berries, orange rind, peonies, rose petals and spices, it's medium to full-bodied, lively and elegant, with superb depth at the core, ultra-refined tannins and a long, perfumed finish. Bertrand Chevillon reported yields some 50% below average in 2019 but was justly delighted with the quality of the wines. This is another powerful, structured vintage at this address, but the wines are more vibrant than the fine 2018s and more structurally refined, too. As I've written before, this is one of my favorite addresses in all of Burgundy. Old vines, cultivated soils, moderate yields and long fermentations with entirely destemmed grapes are the order of the day at this address, with the Nuits-Saint-Georges Vieilles Vignes seeing some 20% new oak and the premiers crus 30%. Nuits' Tonnellerie Sirugue is the dominant supplier of barrels. (WK)

The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a sublime bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, sous-bois and light rose petal aromas, very harmonious and sophisticated; a light sea cave aroma emerges after a couple of minutes. The palate is well balanced with fine-grained tannins, taut and fresh, with a light marine influence and perhaps more salinity than the other Premier Crus on the finish. This has enormous potential. This is restrained to the point of being almost mute though determined swirling eventually coaxes notes of red and black currant, newly turned earth, humus and a subtle spiciness to emerge. The powerful but sleek middle weight plus flavors possess both an abundance of minerality as well as sappy dry extract that imparts an agreeable texture to the hugely long and exceptionally firm finale. This is very much built for the long-term and even two decades of cellaring might not be quite enough. A definite 'wow' wine! *Burghound Don't Miss Out Outstanding!!*

The bouquet offers succulent deep raspberries in some style. Spicy and peppery too, with some energy at the back, all very much integrated and with a superb length of flavour, on the cusp of red and black. Certainly the longest finish to date. Tasted: November 2020."
