Reviewed January 2021Produced from old vines growing high on a steep slope in Les Chaumées that face east, opposite Montrachet. The results have dense notes of smoke, citrus, green apple and green mango, making this a complex and engaging wine, with a very silky texture that still has the density and substance to age for decades. One of the great white Burgundies, this approaches the quality of most Grand Cru bottlings. (CC)

Picked on 9th September at 13.5% alcohol, with one third new wood. Despite their advanced age the vines here still give enough fruit. The bouquet is more refined than explosive, but clearly carries a depth of fruit with it. The quality of the fruit on the palate is exceptional, predominantly white, but even with some little red fruits. This is a sensual and deeply satisfying wine, plus of course very long. The acidity and alcohol both show less than in other wines because of the sumptuous nature of the fruit. Excellent balance.

The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chaumées Clos de la Truffière is showing especially well, mingling aromas of pear, orange oil, white flowers and toasted bread with hints of smoke and beeswax. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and concentrated, with terrific cut and chalky structuring extract, it's long and penetrating. (WK) 94+

A gentle dollop of wood sets off the aromas of petrol, rosemary oil and a garrigue-like note on the poached pear scented nose. The delicious, intense and slightly more concentrated flavors possess focused power on the solidly long finish. This too could use better depth, but the underlying material appears to be more than up to the task. *Outstanding*
