James Suckling

Reviewed February 2022
This is a very classically structured Bordeaux with blackcurrant, walnut, cedar and hints of toasted oak. It’s reserved now, but shows very serious, polished tannins. Persistent and powerful with fantastic length. Very precise.

The Wine Independent

The 2019 Phelan Segur is composed of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, it needs a lot of shaking to wake up notes of baked plums, blackcurrant pastilles, and clove oil, followed by hints of tree bark, graphite, and tapenade with a waft of crushed rocks. The full-bodied palate is super tightly wound at this stage, featuring very firm, ripe tannins and seamless acidity, finishing very long and earthy. (LPB)

The 2019 Phélan-Ségur has a well-defined bouquet with blackberry and bilberry fruit, a subtle marine influence that develops with aeration. Very cohesive. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very precise with wonderful mineralité and tension. This oozes class, a Swiss watch of a Saint-Estèphe with outstanding length and complexity. Top drawer and a benchmark for the estate. (NM)

Decanter

Blood orange freshness with cigar box elegance, this is at once round and refined. One of the top wines of the Médoc. And while it’s close to 14.5% alcohol, there’s no heaviness or hot, jammy notes. For the price, it would be foolish not to purchase. (PK)

K&L Buyer
I've been a fan of Phélan-Ségur for a while now, as the wines are charming, age beautifully, and continue to be fairly priced. But ever since first tasting the 2019, it's been clear that it is a wine that is on another level altogether. The palate is classic St-Estephe, but the depth of fruit, the remarkable texture, and refined tannins display a level of detail that should have it in the conversation with some of the Northern Médoc's best in 2019. Although there's a lot of value in Bordeaux these days, a Left Bank gem operating at this level for this price is not to be overlooked. 2019 Phélan-Ségur is one that will be a joy to follow over the years to come, but feel free to check in early, as it clearly will have a ton to offer at any stage.

Notes

94 points, Georgia Hindle for Decanter: "Serious and seductive on the nose, full of ripe black fruits and faint florality. A sophisticated style, clearly powerful and concentrated with a core of succulent blackcurrant and black cherry fruit but delivered with poise and refinement. Round, generous and juicy with lashings of slate, liquorice and menthol freshness with tannins that are both abundant and well integrated, cushioning the fruit and driving it through to a long finish. Excellent clarity and confidence here. A top buy." (1/2022)
