Reviewed July 2019A rich and dense Champagne with complexity and decadence, in a fresh and agile way. Very driven and energetic with praline, cooked apples and hints of honey. Some bread dough, but subtle and vivid. Very tight and focused. Racy and direct. Bright edition. Very fine textured. Youngest wine in the blend is 2011.

Take it home. Or give it a cellar.

Shown alongside the 2011 vintage release, the 2011-based Grande Cuvée demonstrates the utter refinement of Krug's assemblage at almost six years post-disgorgement. Grapefruit marmalade, charry toast and butter leap up with immediate energy, with the warmth of nougat, nuts in honey and ground coffee showing classic development on cork (as well as the high percentage of reserve wines in this edition). There's a beautiful cooked red fruit intensity to the close, detailed and sumptuous yet full of citric energy, with the mousse settling into pillowy luxuriation. Truly hitting its stride now. A blend of 191 wines, with reserves back to 1995. (TH)

Crafted around the 2011 harvest, the 167eme Grand Cuvee includes 42% reserve wines in the final blend that span more than 10 vintages, with 47% Pinot Noir, 36% Chardonnay and the rest Meunier. Golden straw-colored, it boasts a lot of power and balance, leaping from the glass as it opens to notes of orange custard, toasted brioche, hazelnuts, and ripe peach. Full-bodied and expressive, it’s complete and long on the palate, with an exceptional tone offering a great deal of power yet refined with a pillowy mousse. Disgorged four years ago, this is highly compelling at this stage and worth getting your hands on. (AH)

It had been nearly five years since I last drank Krug’s “167ème Édition” of Grande Cuvée. As readers may recall, this iteration is based on the vintage of 2011, though the final cuvée ended up including forty-two percent reserve wines, dating all the way back to 1995. The wine is really drinking splendidly today, offering up a bright, focused and complex aromatic constellation of apple, fresh apricot, orange peel, a touch of heather, chalky minerality, rye bread, smoky overtones, caraway seed and a topnote of dried flowers. On the palate the wine is full-bodied and wide open in personality, with lovely depth at the core, fine soil undertow and grip, lovely acids, elegant mousse and a long, complex and seamlessly balanced, vibrant finish. Great juice and one of the more recent examples of Grande Cuvée that I would look to for current drinking.

The Krug team dug deep into their reserves for the 167th edition, using 42% reserve wines in the final blend, leaning on not only older Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but also some of their prized old vine Meunier. The final composition is 47% Pinot Noir, 36% Chardonnay and 17% Meunier from vintages spanning 1995-2011. This 167th edition of Krug is my favorite out of the gate since the 163rd, and I think might end up being a legend like the 157th, known internally at Krug as the savoir-faire, based on another difficult vintage, the 2001. The use of a lot of reserve wines really shined through in this bottle, with hazelnut complexity, brioche like depth and beguiling savory fruit. The texture, as usual for Krug, is perfect after 7 years of ageing on the lees, and the bead is tight and precise. The best feature is how all of these elements are brought into focus by the incredible minerality of the wine… This is not heavy, vinous stuff, but rather elegant, nuanced Champagne.

Even in difficult years, the best winemakers are able to craft something extraordinary and special and the 167 seems to epitomize this. Based on the more difficult 2011 harvest, this is a showcase to the blender's art. A toasty and full nose that opens into florals and hints of quince and Asian pear with just a bit of lemon custard. The palate is amazing, with a texture and finish that has to be experienced to be fully understood. It's been said that Krug is King of Champagne and if you want to know why, buy this bottle.

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of tasting a number of Krug champagnes, a most memorable way to begin the day, and this latest version of Krug Grand Cuvee is a stunner. As with the 166, and other previous offerings, this bottling has the Krug almond cookie and mid-palate (in this case light) toastiness. Flavors and texture that set Krug apart from the competition. The 167, however, has greater acidity, more minerality, and a hint of chalk. The finish is very, very, clean and refreshing. It lingers on and on. This is THE perfect wine for shellfish cooked in pretty much any manner. This should also prove to be one of the longer lived Grand Cuvee's. It will cellar magnificently.
