Burghound

Reviewed June 2018
An expressive yet cool nose offers up aromas of citrus peel, floral and white-fleshed orchard fruit that are trimmed in just enough wood and menthol to notice. There is good vibrancy to the delicious and exceptionally rich middle weight flavors that possess outstanding complexity on the beautifully long if still youthfully austere finale. At least some patience will definitely be required. *Sweet Spot, Outstanding*

The Champs Canet is excellent this year, with a complex and vibrant bouquet of lime, lemon zest, white peach and chalky soil tones. The palate is elegant, texturally refined and sappy; full-bodied and silky with lovely energy and good grip on the lingering finish. Drinking Window 2019 - 2030. (WK)

Bright yellow. Sexy aromas of lemon zest, peach, hazelnut and smoky lees. At once sweet and pure, offering noteworthy density and freshness to its rather creamy flavors of yellow peach and soft citrus fruits. Seamless, nicely balanced wine with excellent length and fruit retention. There's good weight here but assistant winemaker (Benoît) Riffault says the finished alcohol is no higher than 13%. (ST)

The 2016 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Canet is more in line with the La Perrière: a strict, no-frills bouquet with flint and cut grass aromas. The palate is well balanced with a slightly waxy texture. This is a more resinous Puligny from Sauzet in 2016, more about the texture than overt fruit expression, although it lets its hair down with that dash of white pepper on the aftertaste. My intuition is that it might be one of the more forward wines from the domaine this year... (NM)

Notes

92-94 points, Jasper Morris (MW): "First to be picked as usual. Never a big yield here. Full primrose colour. This has a reticent nose, but makes a ripe mouthful on the palate with some bacon fat notes. The weight is at the back but it needs refinement which should come with further elevage." (01/2018) 95 points, Tim Atkin (MW): "This comes from the Meursault side of the village, but it remains a classic Puligny in terms of structure and focus. Fennel, gunflint and liquorice aromas segue into a palate that’s crunchy and well balanced, with subtle oak and appealing focus and sap. Hugely appealing. 2020-28." (01/2018) Winery notes: "from a full 1.1 ha parcel of 40+ year old vines in Champ Canet proper though some of them were planted in 1938 at the same time as the Bienvenues"
