The 2008 Tokaji Aszu Szt Tamas 6-Puttonyos is a no-holds-barred, slam-dunk, brilliant wine. The delineation is astonishing on the nose, unfurling with entrancing scents of orange blossom, freshly sliced apricots, almond and quince – all beautifully focused. The palate has pitch-perfect acidity, great depth and power, and yet it is elegant from its start to its finish, which has that ever so slightly bitter lemon tang that offsets the sweetness. Forget whatever you are doing – go seek out this sensational Tokaji. (NM)

(174 g.l. r.s): Bright orange-gold. Smells lighter and livelier than the Betsek, offering fruitier aromas of peach and apricot. Then fresh, high-pitched and tight on the palate, with lively acidity framing and lifting the flavors of orange zest, apricot and spices. Finishes youthful, silky and long. Like the Betsek, this is a blend of furmint, hárslevelû and yellow muscat. (ST)

Saint Thomas. 54 ha in Mád of which they have 12.2 ha. Red volcanic topsoil, one of very few terroirs which have subsoil. Is one of the few sites which can make very good dry as well as sweet wines. They have vineyards on west and south-east facing slopes, mostly west facing, which were owned by Jesuits. Amazingly tense and exciting. Dense. Sings and reverberates. Real finesse. 19/20 points (JR)

Notes

The Royal Tokaji Wine Company, founded in 1989, revitalizes the storied Tokaji wine region. From the winery: "Royal Tokaji owns a unique combination of first and second growth vineyards, including one of the two great first growths Mezes Maly. Along with Szt Tamas, Betsek, Nyulaszo, Birsalmas, the Royal Tokaji winery comprises 107 hectares of vineyards...Sharing its microclimate with Nyulaszó, which is virtually on 'the next hill' and on the same ridge, Szt Tamas is south facing and can be seen on the right hand side of the road as one enters Mád. Nearly all the 22 parcels, which forms the company's holding in this vineyard are in the top league. Classed 1st growth in 1700, the old knew what they were doing. Today Szt Tamas is the most expensive vineyard in its commune - if one can buy any land there at all! Size of Royal Tokaji holding: 11ha, 22 parcels. Soil: rich clay.Tasting Note: Lovely, bright, old gold appearance. Elegant and well-integrated of spices, honey, honey- suckle and acacia. Develops on the palate into a complex array of exotic fruits with a finish of tremendous length."
