Chris Kissack

Reviewed December 2019
At ten years of age this wine still displays a dense hue, lightly hazy and concentrated in the glass, with a touch of degradation to the cherry red rim. The nose is brimming with confidence, smoky with blackcurrant skins, juniper berry and bay leaf, along with notes of smouldering charcoal. There are also some fresher notes too, celery seed and celeriac leaf, interwoven with the dark fruit. Texturally full and confident on the palate, with a velvety yet also sinewy and savoury substance through the middle, run through with ripe and tightly grained tannins, peppery and slightly warm, with a long and confident finish. An excellent showing, so present and energetic, and with such length. As with previous notes, there are some methoxypyrazine threads here which some may find dissuasive, but I think it all works really well together, while maintaining a distinctive and slightly idiosyncratic style.

Dark and structured, this is a firm wine. It has a smoky wood character, powerful tannins over intensely ripe fruit. Acidity and sweetness balance to give a dense wine, powered with richness and destined to age for many years. *Top 100 Cellar Selections of 2012* (RV)

Silky and rich, this showcases black cherry with gourmet touches and swirls of black pepper and rosemary. There's certainly an exotic edge here, with the natural drawing in of its Médoc tannins and highly enjoyable mouthwatering finish. It's a good Giscours with clear personality, focus and balance. Decant if drinking it in the next five years. (JA)

This powerful, yet well-structured Margaux has a lot of positive cabernet sauvignon character (cassis, ripe plum) for the appellation. Long, very clean positive finish. Drink or hold.

Notes

94 points Robert Parker for Wine Advocate: "The finest Giscours in my professional career (I said the same thing from barrel), this dense purple wine has a stunning nose of burning embers, charcoal, creme de cassis, new saddle leather and damp, forest floor notes. It is full-bodied, with exceptionally sweet, well-integrated tannins and a multi-dimensional, almost skyscraper-like mid-palate and finish. With its low acidity and remarkable substance and depth, this gorgeous wine should age beautifully for 20-30 years." (12/2011)
