Reviewed December 2006A barrel-fermented style. Shows a slight oxidative character, with whole-grain toast, ginger, exotic citrus and honey notes. Big and dry, with a firm structure and a tactile sensation on the finish. A Champagne for food. *Collectibles* (BS)

Wine Advocate
The 1995 Clos du Mesnil shows pretty notes of autumn leaves, truffles and citrus. It is a rather fat, texturally rich vintage that probably won’t age forever, but rather a wine that offers rewarding drinking at a relatively young stage by Clos du Mesnil standards. (AG)

The 1995 Clos du Mesnil was simply awesome. A sweet, layered bouquet melded into a core of pure fruit that was a beauty to behold. A powerful Clos de Mesnil, the 1995 came across as a superb white Burgundy with bubbles. This bottle in particular was one of the finest – perhaps the finest – I have ever tasted. (AG)

Wine & Spirits
The Clos du Mesnil produced a golden Chardonnay Champagne in 1995, its concentrated flavors run through with electricity, tooth-jarring in its youthful power. If figs could be white, if lime pith could be chalk, they'd both play a role in the flavors of this wine, as does oak, which caramelizes the mineral flavors. Too young to touch, this needs another five years to mellow, and should continue to mature for years after.

This walled vineyard is located in the southernmost grand cru in Champagne, the famous village of Mesnil. The vineyard used to be called the Clos Tarin and the grapes used to be bought by Salon until the Tarin family sold it in the 1970s. From it comes Krug's and (by natural extension) Champagne's most expensive wine. Many balk at the price of this wine, but it holds it place next to the first growths of Bordeaux and the great domains of Burgundy with a blend of power, subtlety and most importantly inimitability. One of the icons of the world of wine.
