Reviewed December 2007A wonderfully firm, concentrated wine that walks a fine, balanced line between richness and poised structure. It is classic in the best sense, showing all the shape of a fine Bordeaux, while adding the extra dimension of the freshest of black fruits, complexity from a few hints of wood, and a dark, brooding, long-lasting aftertaste. *Editors' Choice* (RV)

Chris Kissack
Tasted alongside its sibling wine, Langoa-Barton, this vintage of Léoville-Barton asserts its authority. As seems typical of the vintage even at this age, this appears quite dense in the glass, with rich pigment reaching out right to the rim. The nose is classically left bank in style, with savoury seams of iron fillings and beef blood, the predominant feature here minerally and ferruginous, along with greater charm in the shape of juniper berry, pencil shavings, black olive, graphite and a touch of antiseptic lotion. A polished and elegantly balanced style on the palate, with a broad and sinewy texture, a little touch of flesh to the midpalate texture, with finely grained and ripe tannins, and a salty black olive core. All in all this is very fine, confident yet textured, and while drinking well now this has years in it yet.

The 2001 Léoville Barton is still a few years from full maturity. Unwinding in the decanter and glass with aromas of blackcurrant, licorice, loamy soil, cigar wrapper and vanilla pod, it's medium to full-bodied, rich and muscular, with a deep, concentrated core of fruit, lively acids and ripe but firm tannins that still assert themselves on the finish. Gorgeous aromas of crushed blackberries and flowers. Medium- to full-bodied, with well-knit tannins and a silky, caressing palate. Long. This is a wonderful wine. Lots of finesse. (JS)
Notes
This is a great value from Bordeaux--or anywhere in the red wine world. 70% Cab Sauv, 20% Merlot, 10% Cab Franc. Very focused wine, tons of fruit. Big and powerful wine. Super pure and classic style. As usual, it is one of the best wines in Bordeaux and one of the best values in the world.
