The Cuvée Louis bottling is the top of the line from the Tarlant family, with its first vintage having been the 1982. Today, it is not a vintage-dated bottling, but rather one that is based on eighty-five percent of a base year and fifteen percent a blend of reserve wines from the three previous vintages. In this case, the wine is base year 1999, so that the reserve part of the blend hails from 1998, 1997 and 1996. The wine is a fifty-fifty blend of chardonnay and pinot noir, planted in the lieu à dit of “Les Crayons” in Oeuilly back in 1946. The wine was barrel-fermented in four year-old casks and aged until May of 2000 in barrel prior to blending and bottling. This is a stunning wine, offering up a superb bouquet of pear, white peach, fresh-baked bread, a stunning soil signature, pastry tones, gentle smokiness, an exotic touch of saffron and a bit of butteriness in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very complex, with lovely secondary layers already emerging, a fine core, elegant mousse and excellent mineral drive on the very long, beautifully balanced and classy finish. Great juice. (JG) 94+

The most iconic wine at Tarlant is the single vineyard Tarlant "Cuvée Louis" Brut Champagne. It comes from a vineyard called les Crayons which is on the slope nearest the Marne on their property. While the rest of their vineyard has widely varied soil types, the Crayons is very pure chalk and quite old- over 60 years. The current batch is based on 1999 and has reserves going back to 1996 and has been aged on the lees for fifteen years, just being disgorged in May of 2015. It is now labeled as extra brut, as the dosage is just 2g/l, but don’t be scared- the 15 years on the lees has made this a rich, full bodied Champagne that is in no way austere or hard. If you want a grower Champagne of spectacular depth and Burgundian power, this even blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir is an excellent choice- it is one of the great single vineyard Champagnes period.

Yes, I love this Champagne this much! It has almost everything that one could ask for in a bubbly. Complexity, quality, cellar worthiness and just plain old fantastic taste! Rich and toasty with golden apples, toasted sourdough and cinnamon. I worship at the house of Krug and Tarlant's Cuvee Louis is a chapel on the property. When we have it, buy a magnum! You won't regret it!

Notes

Tarlant’s Cuvée Louis is a tribute to Louis Tarlant, the family patriarch who helped shape modern Champagne by championing grower independence and playing a role in the movement that led to the establishment of the Champagne AOC. The Tarlant family has farmed in the Vallée de la Marne since 1687, and Louis began bottling estate Champagne under the family name in 1928 rather than selling fruit to the grandes marques. Produced only in select years, Cuvée Louis comes from the family’s historic Les Crayons parcel, planted by Louis between 1946 and 1948. The wine is typically an equal blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from these old vines. Each component is vinified separately, aged in oak, and bottled without dosage as a Brut Nature, reflecting the house’s long-standing commitment to transparency of site and vintage. Benoît and Mélanie Tarlant continue to farm and vinify the parcel with minimal intervention, emphasizing the character of this singular vineyard rather than a standardized house style.
