2018 was an especially beautiful year, with ripe fruit and relatively low acidity. As the aromas revealed themselves, the first thing that came to mind was toasted bread spread with warm butter and honey. Then it developed into fresh apple, blooming flowers, and bright citrus notes that gradually came into focus. I love how seamlessly the palate follows the nose and intensifies those exact profiles. Though only a small portion saw oak, the wine carries a gentle roundness layered with a lees character and a mineral finish that keeps it refreshing. Elegant and comforting, this is the kind of Champagne that disappears from the glass far too quickly.

Mantensei Kinoko Junmai Ginjo Sake (720ml)

I had a feeling this sake would be special just from the label- a playful bouquet of mushrooms in all shapes and colors, hinting at what’s to come. And it delivers! This Junmai Ginjo opens bright and lifted, yet surprisingly full, gradually developing into something richer and more layered. I especially like its complexity, balancing savory and sweet- earth and toasted nuts alongside notes of honey and sweet miso. The finish leans into umami, with a mouthwatering mushroom note that ties everything together. It made me think of a steaming-hot pan of juicy foraged mushrooms, deglazed with a splash of this sake to make the flavors burst even more. While I often serve lighter, more delicate styles chilled, this is one I’d gently warm so it can open up and show its depth.

This wine can provide immediate satisfaction or, if you'd prefer a more velvety mouthfeel, be a great wine to lay down for a couple years.

2024 Ridge Vineyards Paso Robles Grenache Blanc

While the winemaker behind this delicious Grenache Blanc is being playful, this bottle doesn't play around. You can really tell how much effort went into making it- from the precise combination of varieties (85% Grenache Blanc, 12% Picpoul, and 3% Roussanne), to the meticulous fermentation process that involves stainless steel, barrels both old and new, as well as amphora and concrete tanks mixed in. The result? A vividly aromatic wine, that’s complex and serious but still fresh and vibrant. The bright acidity balances the smoky flint notes, and the savory minerality ties the whole thing together beautifully.

2021 Heitz Cellar Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

2022 Cantina Terlano "Vorberg" Pinot Bianco Riserva Alto Adige

This wine grabbed me right away. That golden-lemon color had me expecting something layered and interesting- and it really delivered. As a Chardonnay lover, I found that Pinot Bianco is now my favorite variety to explore. It's mineral and crisp, with pear, green apple, and floral notes. It has a medium body and a great texture with a long, satisfying finish. For my taste, it doesn't fall far from the complex, barrel-aged, round white wines I usually look for. If you like white Burgundy or Alsace, you're in for a treat with this one.
